Grey's Anatomy Review: "Almost Grown"

at . Comments

I may get a bunch of comments that disagree, but this week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy really didn’t do it for me. I found myself losing more interest as each minute passed.

Don’t get me wrong, it was awesome watching my favorite residents become attendings in “Almost Grown.” But even the dark navy scrubs couldn’t make me love the episode.

I did find it odd that the Chief would ask each of the head surgeons what they would do to make the hospital more inspirational with the $1 million grant. Where did he get the money?

Who do you think the donor could be? Dare I say it’s Izzie?

An R-Webb Photo

Where did the Chief even get a million dollars, Bailey wondered?

The doctors all had inspirational ideas for what he/she would do with the money, but Bailey had the best point. If you look at the situation in a realistic way, getting all the broken equipment fixed and a new night nurse sounds like a logical way to go.

I even love the way Bailey put the circumstance that the Chief’s in:

"Let’s not go to Paris. Let’s go to the grocery store Chief."

Bailey wanted the Chief to realize the importance of putting food on the table. This was a great metaphor for how Bailey has been looking at life since the mass murders. She used to be a big believer and dreamer and now she just focuses on getting by.

My favorite inspirational idea probably came from Derek, who wanted to use the money to find a cure for Alzheimer’s because he believes that Meredith may have it.

It almost broke my heart to see Meredith unable to find the keys that were in her hand. Do you think that this is where the writers will take Meredith’s storyline next?

If so, I definitely do not like where this is headed.

Derek and Meredith have been through enough drama to last at least five lifetimes. Now Shonda wants to throw in Alzheimer’s? Why can’t we just focus on a McBaby?

A Callie Torres Pic

Callie says she's not the better lesbian. She's definitely not the better presenter.

It was weird that Callie and Arizona used their time with the Chief to get their relationship anger out in the open. Does this mean that there’s trouble in paradise already?

One great aspect from this week was Cristina’s ability to quasi-open up her shell because of her patient, Roy. At first, it didn’t seem like we’d make any headway this week.

By the end of the episode, however, it looked like there was a flicker of the old Cristina coming back! No more sourpuss on this lady's face!

I am so in love with the way Owen has been treating Cristina! He has been everything she’s needed and more. Finally, here is a man that won’t back down and run away when time gets tough. I just can’t wait to see how their marriage develops.

Jackson had a small part in playing Meredith like a fool this week. Hopefully next week his character will get a bigger role and we can see more character development!

Overall, I felt slightly disappointed, yet still entertained. What can I say? I am a huge Grey’s fan that just expects the best out of these doctors! Until next week, here are a few of my favorite Grey’s Anatomy quotes from last night:

Meredith: We all want to grow up. We're desperate to get there. Grab all the opportunities we can to live. We're so busy trying to get out of that mess, we don't think about the fact that it's going to be cold out there. Really freaking cold. Because growing up sometimes means leaving people behind. And by the time we stand on our own two feet, we're standing there alone. | permalink
Bailey: (to Richard) Let's not go to Paris. Let's go to the grocery store Chief. | permalink
Teddy: (to Cristina) Congratulations. You were a doctor today. | permalink
April: I'm not used to failing.
Cristina: Neither am I. | permalink
Derek: (to Richard) Breakthroughs don't happen because of the medicine. Real breakthroughs happen because someone is scared to death to stop trying. | permalink
Meredith: Let me finish Derek, I got this.
Derek: Yes you do. | permalink
Lexie: You totally sound like an attending.
Meredith: Right? | permalink
Cristina: Everybody will be fine except for Roy. He will be dead.
April: Wow, way to kill a happy moment. | permalink
April: Cardio is not my thing.
Cristina: What? | permalink
Karev: You want your kid to be a man? Let him make his own decisions. | permalink
Owen: (to Cristina) There you are. I knew you were in there somewhere. End this day, good or bad, we're going to go home together. | permalink
Owen: I like the dark new scrubs on you. You look good. Are you okay?
Cristina: My patient deserves a doctor.
Owen: You don't have to cut, no ones asked you to...
Cristina: I know what's being asked of me and I'm doing it. | permalink
Jackson: I just wish we had more time.
Meredith: You did your whole name! | permalink
Mark: Are you excited? I'm excited.
Richard: Leave. Right now. | permalink
Cristina: I don't have a sourpuss this is just my face.
April: It's true. That is just her face. | permalink
Teddy: Dr. Yang, I don't know?
Cristina: I'm here, I'm trying, but ...
Teddy: I'm not asking you to be in the OR. I'm asking you to say something, to participate. We're at a crossroads Yang, a crossroads where you either get in the game or I tell Richard it's time to send you home. | permalink
Teddy: Dr. Yang, do you agree?
Cristina: I don't know.
Teddy: You don't know if you agree? | permalink
Jackson: Competing with the wife. If that's not a stacked deck.
Meredith: It's a game really. All you have to do is win, which you wont. | permalink
Richard: Pray people, we want God in the building today. | permalink
Meredith: They train doctors slowly. They watch us practice on frogs and pigs and dead people and then live people. They grill us relentlessly. They raise us like children and eventually they take a cold hard boot and kick us out of the next. | permalink

    Meredith McDreamy,
I remember that Lexie came in new and was an intern and Meredith was ahead of her. I just thought that when the Mercy West students came, they were ALL interns, too. Like for example Steve (dark, curly hair, cute, timid) -- I'm amazed I missed this thing that April & Jackson were ahead of Lexie. DOH! (that's my Homer Simpson noise). Well, next time I watch the whole show over from beginning to now, I need to watch for this!

    1. april talks too much.
    2. hasn't meredith had her solo surgery before? i can't really remember.. i thought i remember derek giving it to her to cheer her up before or something..
    3. why are these attendings so unprofessional in their pitches to the chief? why do they have to bring their sex lives and relationship issues into work?
    4. loved the look of pride in derek when he saw meredith's successful surgery

@ Beth, If I'm not mistaken, Lexie was introduced to us in season 3 as a new, incoming intern just as Meredith and crew passed the resident examination (if you'll recall, George failed which is why he was working so closely with Lexie) so Lexie isn't on the same level as Meredith, Alex and Cristina though she is very smart. Also, Jackson and April are 4th year residents -- they transferred from Mercy West and if you'll recall the Seattle Grace residents were worried about being pushed out of the program to accommdate the Mercy Westers but this never happened. Jackson and April are in the same year but clearly the MW program wasn't as strong as the SG program. Hope this helps :)

I liked the episode. I really liked that we got to see kick-ass surgeon Meredith again -- it was LONG overdue. I also LOVED witnessing Derek admire his wife's ability in the OR. I'm happy the Chief challenged his attendings. After all, Seattle Grace is a teaching hospital and Richard has more experience than his attendings. It is his job to continue teaching them and pushing them to help them better even better doctors. I think that's what the challenge did. I'm also glad that he choose Owen's proposal over Derek's. If he had chosen Derek's it would have been predictable especially since the Chief sees Meredith as the daughter he never had from the woman he onced loved. Choosing her health would have been the obvious choice. Choosing Owen's proposal was smart. Not only does it train the doctors to assist others in traumatic situations, it will bond them all in a way that they need right now. They are still healing and this may give them the tools they need to fully recover. Am I the only one that thinks Derek DOES NOT think that Meredith has Alzheimer's disease? His conversation with the Chief, in my opinion, didn't indicate that he thinks she has it. His conversation confirmed his fear that she COULD get it and her occasional forgetfulness (and Meredith's revelation that she did the gene study test) scares him because it COULD be on the onset of the disease and he doesn't want to lose her to it and he doesn't want her to lose her talent to it. Did anyone else get that from the conversation?? I'm glad Derek didn't win the money because it will drive him to fight harder to start the project on his own. It will be interesting to see if he revails his concern to Meredith, if he will keep the trial a secret(come on' we know it's coming at some point -- Derek won't rest until it's done), or if they'll work together on it. Derek's face, when he lost, was absolutely heart-breaking. Patrick Dempsey is awesome! Also, I want to see the Chief bond with Meredith more. This is the second time he's heard about Meredith, Alzheimer's and Ellis. The first time was from Meredith and the second time was from Derek. We need to see more concern from him when it comes to Meredith even if he didn't approve the proposal. Alex = awesomenessness! Yes, awesome-ness-ness. He will be a kick ass peds surgeon. I'm hoping Mark and Arizona fight over him because he would be good in either craft. I want and need to see both Meredith and Alex kick surgical ass this season -- their talent has been under played and it is LONG overdue to show the audience that Cristina isn't the only resident that rocks! Love Sandra Oh, her portrayl of Cristina is absolutely heart-breaking. Love Cristina's connection to Roy. I hope he is instrumental in Cristina becoming Cristina again -- really hope he's a reoccuring character this season. I LOVE Bailey's relationship with the Chief and I agreed with her proposal when though I really, really liked Owen's and Derek's. She's right -- there's a lot of basics that they need to focus on before the glamourous. Hope Shonda Rhimes remembers these words because we need some basics (e.g. Kick ass Meredith and Alex LOL)from Grey's before we get to the glamourous (e.g., Meredith having a McBaby, Alzheimer's or both and Alex getting into a relationship with another crazy chic).

Can anyone explain to me why Lexie was not allowed to act as an attending but that April and Jackson were? I thought they were in the same year as Lexie??? Someone said something about being a fourth-year resident to get to play attending, right? I would really like someone to clarify this for me. I've watched it twice but still have not picked up the reason for this.

If Shonda gives Mer alzheimer's after all the crap she's already been through, Grey's is going to end very depressing, and I honestly till not watch those episodes. I watch TV to escape from depressing stuff, not see more of it. I want my TV shows to end happily, with people happy and healthy,NOT with main characters who have had nothing but crap rain on their head for much of their life get struck down by an incurable, debilitating disease. :( If Mer's gonna get Alzheimer's, I'm actually considering stopping watching Grey's now, so I can just remember the happy stuff.

I think the 'competetion for the $1m' was a bit of a fake. The chief wanted something to show the camera crew (who are gonna give it as their payment for the documentary). Owen's winning entry was a response to the shooting. But for me it felt too much like a military planned response to an emergency. Would Bailey really have found an alternate route to drag a dying man to get him to surgery? IMO , no. But the writers now have to have 5 residents in their 4th year doing solo surgeries as well as the attendings. BAiley and Callie were doing surgery all the time on their own in their 4th year. It's gonna be a struggle to fit the 4th year residents doing that in S7. The cast is too big. Webber as the chief won't be a sugical regular, but there are now 13 surgeons. I really think the adding of Avery and Kepner made the cast too big.
