TV Fanatic Mid-Season Report Card: The Vampire Diaries 12/28/2010

by at . Comments

With our favorite prime time shows on hiatus, TV Fanatic is taking a look back at some buzzed-about programs and grading their performance this fall, with a look toward 2011.

Previously this week, we gave a solid grade to The Good Wife. Up now: The Vampire Diaries.

Best episode: "Kill or Be Killed." Surprises sprung up in seemingly every scene on this installment, which concluded with the revelation that Katherine was working with Mason. This development would lead to the latter's death, which has now led to the presence of more werewolves in Mystic Falls.

The Salvatore Siblings

Best character: Damon seemed like too obvious of a selection... but for good reason. If there were more heartbreaking scenes on TV this fall than Damon telling Elena he loved her, only to then compel her to forget, well, I haven't seen any.

Worst character: Jeremy means well. He's also built up a nice physique. But, let's face it, the guy is boring. I don't blame Bonnie for her lack of attraction.

Most impressive cast member: Nina Dobrev. Ian Somerhalder may get the best lines, and Paul Wesley broods with the best of them, but Dobrev goes from Elena to Katherine, from sweet to mischievous, with apparent ease. It's been a pleasure to watch.

Biggest surprise: Caroline would have been in the running for Worst Character, but her transformation into a vampire has breathed new life into this blonde... literally! The new Caroline brims with self-confidence and has found a well-meaning mission in her quest to assist Tyler.

Best addition: New characters enter Mystic Falls more often than Damon raises his eyebrows. But Rose has made the most permanent impression. She's helped reveal yet another human side to our favorite Salvatore sibling.

Hopes for 2011: More of the same, really. The show may run out of momentum at some point, but I'm happy to sit back and enjoy the ride while it continues to be this unexpected and suspenseful. I'll also be happy to see more of Dobrev in black lingerie.

Overall grade: A.

I agree....but I'm not so sure about the Best episode being "Kill or Be Killed"..... I prefer "The Return", "Masquerade", "Plan B", "Rose", "Katerina" and "The Sacrifice".
And I disagree on Jeremy being the worst character....

I agree but most boring i would give to bonnie, she just isn't interesting! And hopes for 2011 is to see more of Ian Somehalder topless! And more stefan and elena romance stufff, a lack in the first ahlf!

Seriously, another love interest for Stefan?? How many ladies can one man have following him?? How many MORE are after Stefan? Let's face it, DAMON should be the one having a love interest. Is he never going to find true love?! I have an story in my head, it includes Stelena and a long lost (old/vamp/badass) love returning for D-boy, but the problem is he does not remember her (who could have caused him to forget his loverr? ofcourse: Kat)...

Best Episode: Plan B

Biggest Surprise: Caroline turning into a vampire, Katherine loving Stefan
Best Addition: Rose, Elijah
Hopes for 2011: More of the same!

Whoops. I meant werewolf. Michael Trevino for his work in the transformation of Tyler into a werewolf.

Tvjunkie

Best Episode: I personally like Rose because of the confessions of Damon's love to Elena in the end.
Best Character: Damon, hands down. And maybe even Katherine cause I enjoy watching her manipulations.
Worst Character: Matt and Jenna. They're both really useless and they don't really have a story in the show anymore. It's like they're extras.
Most Impressive Cast Member: Nina Dobrev for being able to effortlessly play both Elena and Katherine. Her performance in "Katerina" was mind blowing cause she played the driven Elena, the manipulative Katherine, and the Bulgarian Katherine from the 1800s. Also have to credit Michael Trevino for his work in the transformation of Tyler into a vampire.

So tired of the DAMON SHOW...Writers please move on. Damon needs to be a player not a whipped, lovesick puppy. yawnnnn

LOVE Bonnie even though i agree that the writers should give her a little bit more of a storyline besides the fact that she hates vampires so much.

Vampire Diaries Quotes

You want a love that consumes you. You want passion and adventure, and even a little danger... I want you to get everything you're looking for. But for right now, I want you to forget that this happened. Can't have people knowing I'm in town yet. Goodnight, Elena.

Damon

Damon: You know what they are? Children. Like lighting a candle's going to make everything OK, or even saying a prayer. Or pretending Elena's not going to end up just like the rest of us murdering vampires. Stupid, delusional, exasperating little children. And I know what you're going to say: 'It makes them feel better, Damon.' So what? For how long? A minute, a day? What difference does it make? Because in the end, when you lose somebody, every candle, every prayer is not going to make up for the fact that the only thing you have left is hole in your life where that somebody that you cared about used to be. And a rock with a birthday carved into it that I'm pretty sure is wrong. So thanks, friend. Thanks for leaving me here to babysit. Because I should be long gone by now. I didn't get the girl, remember? I'm just stuck here fighting my brother and taking care of the kids. You owe me big.
Alaric: I miss you too, buddy.
