The Vampire Diaries Review: Doom, Gloom and Personal Growth

at . Comments

Damon Salvatore has a secret, Vampire Diaries viewers, and he just couldn't keep it at the conclusion of "The Descent."

It's not that he loves Elena and it's not that he's saddened by the demise of Rose. It's that he actually yearns to be the exact thing he has spent months claiming to despise: human. I didn't see that admission coming.

Heated, Hot Argument

The 2011 premiere of The Vampire Diaries kicked off and concluded with a major body count: three campers (dead), one shirtless blood sucker (Stefan), one unfortunate female (dead? dying? Damon's new sex slave?)

In between, the plot didn't move forward very much, but plenty of information was passed between characters that planted the seeds for what should be an exciting second half of the season. To wit:

Stefan is pulling a Katherine, trying to build up his tolerance to vervain. Not a bad strategy, but let's remember how close he came to the dark side when he did the same with human blood.

When Rose was not sucking down packets of blood like they were six packs at Charlie Sheen's house, she spent a lot of time selling Elena on the advantages of being human, even saying building a family with a vampire is "not compatible" for her kind. Is this more foreshadowing of a decision Elena will soon have to make?

We've seen countless love triangles before on television, but this has to be the first between a human, werewolf and vampire, right? Then again, with the intel Jules has passed along the Tyler, he may wanna yell at Caroline more than make out with her next week. (It's true.)

That was a very strange dream within which Damon and Rose hung out, wasn't it? It was a touching scene and all, but it seemed to be an example of the show making up a supernatural rule. Since when can Damon control another vampire's subconscious in such a manner?

Can't say I missed Bonnie or Jeremy very much. No offense, guys. But let's all welcome back John Gilbert. Hope your fingers are feeling better, buddy.

Overall, one might criticize the episode for focusing too much on Rose, a character we haven't known for very long. But I see it differently. The extended death scene and the pain she was in as a result of the werewolf bite was necessary in order to depict the stakes that are on the horizon during the impending werewolf/vampire war.

A bite from the former may leave you in the arms of Damon Salvatore, but not in the way most women dream about. It's a grueling way to go, and it's a fate our heroes will stare down over the next few weeks. I can't wait.

Great episode but so saaad.

I didn't realize it until Damon controlled Rose's dream but Katherine was always controlling Stefans dreams...

I cried when I saw Damon crying. It was so sad!!!!!!
It literally broke ny heart to see him like that!!!:(

I never cared for Rose but this episode was perfect and I cried. I think it was the acting by Damon that made me do it, I never cry lol. He was amazing and even though I was an original stelena shipper, Delena NEEDS to be endgame. Damon is going through hell right now and needs growth and maturity right now BUT eventually they will be ready for each other. I realized that Stelena is an average, immature relationship, devoid of true passion. This will never equal endgame on any tv show, much less a vampire one. I don't tune in to see a boring couple that is thrown at me, I need to feel them. Delena needs a slow buildup, even though its killing most fans.

I don't know how many times I've cried about Rose dying. It was so hard seeing Damon cry, poor baby! You could see how bad he felt when he was about to kill her. Jules, the bitch, needs to die slowly and painfully. Why did STUPID Stefan have to ruin it? Damon was about to kill that bitch Jules and Stefan went and spoiled it. Rose dying was so sad. I feel so sorry for my poor baby Damon! Despite everything he's done, he WAS turned against his will by Stefan. And that was BAD what he did to Jessica at the end of the episode. But it was his grief. I mean, he took Rose's BODY to the sherriff, you could see he was struggling not to cry when he was like, "Here's your vampire," and showed Rose's body to Sherriff Forbes.
Here's what I hope happens: Jules the bitch dies
Elena and Damon get together
Jeremy and Bonnie get together And guess what? DAMON ACTUALLY FEELS! He said so to Elena. I hate Jules so very much!
My poor baby Damon!

Katherine controlled Stefan's dream while in the tomb with her. Why wouldn't Damon have the same capabilites? Didn't he also work on a dream of Elena's when she dreamed of him in the very early beginning? Yes he can do that.

Since the she first appeared on the show, I was waiting for her to die, but I can't help but to feel a little bad for her...
No one deserves to go that way and although I won't miss Rose that much, it was still touching to see the dream Damon compelled. I liked the last scene too, not because I like seeing damon all messed up, because i don't, but because he killed a girl named Jessica (not that she looked anything like me) but my name is Jessica too so can I be at least a little proud? :P I would be honored to be killed by the famous Damon Salvatore (Just kidding)

I'd just like to point out that the show has provided several examples in seasons 1-2 of dream manipulation: Damon did it once to Stefan in 104: Family Ties, and Katherine has pulled this trick twice already in season 2. This is just a continued emphasis on this particular vampire ability.

it was the most painfull episode of al two seasons.i loved the kissing moment between caroline and tyler,i think it was perfect.and the scene of dream folowed by the death of rose, well,it was......................sad,painfull,and touching,it made you want to take away Damon"s pain.

"Since when can Damon control another vampire's subconscious in such a manner?" Um, what? This has been set up so much. Damon did this to Stefan in the BEGINNING of 1st season; Katherine did this to Stefan several times last year. Someone's not paying enough attention, hm?

The Vampire Diaries Season 2 Episode 12 Quotes

He's an Original. I don't really know what that means.

Elena: Don't ruin the moment. You're about to ruin the moment, aren't you?
Stefan: I'm totally ruining the moment.
