Gossip Girl Review: The Implosion of Blair Waldorf

by at . Comments

As Gossip Girl episodes go, no one will accuse "While You Weren't Sleeping" of being one of the more boring installments. There was enough going on to make your head spin.

All in all, it was a pretty good episode if you can overlook some major plot holes and storytelling that seemed a bit jumbled at times. The best part was Miss Leighton Meester.

I'm still on the fence regarding Dair (although inching closer to the YES column), but I'm a card-carrying member of Team Leighton. She's been carrying the show these days.

Watching the disheveled, scatterbrained Blair try to keep it together was priceless, funny and sad at the same time. You loved seeing her crash and burn, yet sympathized.

Blair and Dan Photo

That's how a great character should make you feel, and Leighton brings Blair to life with such panache. Her new foil/friend/possible hookup, Penn Badgley, is no slouch either.

Last night, we saw the once-unflappable Blair falling apart at the seams, and who was there to pick up the pieces but Dan. Not Chuck, not Nate, not even Serena, But Dan.

These two are so cute, and the Gossip Girl writers, for all their convoluted and absurd plots, deserve credit for really allowing Dair's relationship to blossom over many weeks.

Watching Dan trying to help his non-friend multitask, brushing off her rapid-fire knee-jerk insults and ultimately being there for her was the highlight of the night, bar none.

When they ordered pizza together and fell asleep watching movies at the loft, I found myself really happy. I don't know if the fan community at large agrees, but that's me.

Of course, the episode wasn't ALL Dair-related (unfortunately, some might say). There was a whole lot else going on, ranging from drug deals to double agents ...
  • Chuck and Lily buried the hatchet, duping Russell into thinking they were still feuding. She then flirted with Russell while Chuck broke into the Thorpe's office, and even Rufus got in on the gamesmanship a little bit. Woo!
  • Nate was tasked with keeping Raina busy during Chuck's espionage. Nate enticed her to skip a lunch date with Ivanka Trump with some video games and weed. The return of stoner Nate? Definitely another highlight.
  • On his 18th birthday, Eric was blackmailed into becoming a drug mule for Damien, whose smuggled cocaine was waiting in packages of pink tulips that he somehow couldn't grab himself because of his father's watchful eye.
  • We know, it makes no sense. The short version: various mishaps lead to the wrong stuff getting picked up and Damien crashing Eric’s party wanting $100,000 to pay off his clients or else he'll unveil the secret of Lily’s forged affidavit.
  • Ben is warming up to Lily and so in love with Serena.
  • Vanessa showed up for some reason.

In the end, Damien was thwarted by one of about 600 holes in the blackmail story - Ben refusing to cooperate. Never mind that it was Serena’s testimony and proving Lily forged anything based on Damien's testimony would be near-impossible. Anyway.

The final moments show Damien teaming up with Russell Thorpe (now there's an unlikely, ridiculous alliance) to bring down the Van der Woodsen/Bass/Humphrey alliance.

Regarding the love connections, do you see a spark between Serena and Ben? I'm indifferent on that couple. As for Nate and Raina, hey, crazier things have happened right?

Watching their impromptu date, I couldn't help but think there was more chemistry there than between Raina and Chuck. Not that the bar was set too high there, but still.

As for Dan and Blair, what happened after the credits rolled and what the fallout will be next week, we leave you with the CW's promo for the February 28 episode ...

What did you think of last night's Gossip Girl, and how do you think things will play out next week? Who are your favorite couples/characters these days? Discuss!

I'm Dairing so hard right now. I wasn't keen at first, and couldn't understand why the writers would do that to me - a loyal Chair fan. Now I'm not sure whether I like writers more or less for being so much more intelligent than me... Dair are perfect in so many ways. They share wit, intelligence and common ground. Ever since Bad News Blair they have shared an understanding, despite coming from two different worlds. Personality wise, I find Blair and Dan so much more natural than any other relationship that Gossip Girl has shown us. Penn and Leighton are both talented actors that are bringing this story to life and into my mind. It's not often that I become passionate about two make believe characters, but I really find myself rooting for these two. I was close to giving up on Gossip Girl, but these two are keeping me coming back for more. Bravo writers, bravo.

all the time I prayed that there won't be "DAIR", but now I'm kinda "dair"-fan :D
of course nothings better than "chair" but atm it would be great to see a blair-dan hook up also because they're carrying the show.the other storylines are boring and ridicolous.

Also, the reason why most of the viewers did not like Dan before his storyline with Blair could be because he was coupled with boring characters: Serena, Vanessa. I always found him entertaining alone or now with Blair.

Writers, please don't mess the DAIR storyline up - WE LOVE THE SLOW BUILD UP. Also, I would rather have Blair be single than be with egocentric, selfish Chuck. When she was with him, it was all about him. With Dan, it is about HER! Dan is not selfish, he is capable of true feelings. Don't want Serena to hurt him again. Want him to find love with Blair, who is a more stable person in her relationships.

Blair and Dan have incredible chemistry, I am actually shocked. Pen and Leighton just act so well together. Dan and Blair made me love this episode. I totally agree with the review. And I am loving next weeks trailer. Keep going with Dan and Blair- they are great to watch. Even if they just end up as friends- I want the scenes with them to continue. Its rare to see such a relationship really grow week by week. On to the others. Please Vanessa just stay away. If they must bring someone back can it be Georgina? She's a great character! And can Damien just leave already. Really an alliance with Russell? Really? Ben seems to slowly be going to the dark side. And can we maybe throw Nate a real story line? I liked SereNate... throw him in with Ben and Serena. However I do agree that Nate seems to have more chemistry with Raina. Overall I'm excited to see where the rest of the season is going. Sad that another long break is coming up.

Dair just make me fucking screaming. Penn and Leighton have amazing chemistry together. And not just the sexual chemistry like Chuck & Blair, but also the emotional chemistry. The Bass Industries storyline is so BORING, Nate & Raina WTF ?, Serena & Ben WHO CARES ?, Vanessa coming back WHY ?, Damien HE'S GOOD LOOKING so it's ok for me to have him around. I was bored as hell. Just payed attention during the Dair scenes.

@Kitty Yeah, I agree with what you're saying on how these two characters need to find comfort with one another. I like how they're able to find common ground despite their constant disagreements because I think they both need that right now. For me, I see their situation as them watching the people that they love fall into the arms of another person and that's difficult for them. So I like how they're finding comfort but I'm not really leaning towards any kind of romantic relationship between them.

@Caitlyn:
Yes, its pretty obvious that Blair's heart is still with Chuck. Thats what I like with the Dair story. It is not just about having Dair hook up, but for the moment they actually just comfort each other. I love that the show is respectful enough towards Chair and Derena to have Dan and Blair struggle to move on (as opposed to Chuck...)
And at the same time it also gives Dair a common ground to bond and become closer in a realistic way :) ( @all: excuse any mistakes in my comments. I'm not a nativ english speaker... )

Gossip Girl Season 4 Episode 16 Quotes

Serena: Sorry if we kept you up last night. We were playing Scrabble.
Ben: She fell asleep to avoid losing.
Dan: Since when do you enjoy Scrabble?

Mick, Keith and their questionably-costumed cohorts said, "You can't always get what you want." But that doesn't mean it's okay for anyone else to have it either.
