Gossip Girl Season Finale Review: Happily Never After

at . Comments

What a tease.

After Chuck rescued Blair, she let go of their inhibitions and they both had some old-fashioned fun (followed by sex!), it looked like this was it. Chair together for good.

It took her engagement to adequate but uninspiring Louis to bring this about, but here they were. Emotionally bonded and passionately enmeshed forever, come what may.

Until Chuck had a last-minute change of heart and let her go in "The Wrong Goodbye." In his heart of hearts, he seemed to know it was the right decision. But it still hurt.

Big Chair Scene

Perhaps they're not meant to be together after all. Maybe the fire that makes Chair so electric on screen also destroys both. For Chuck, he loved Blair too much to risk it.

When Chuck pulled an about-face and gave Louis his blessing, Blair appeared resigned to the same belief - that she needed to profess her love for Chuck, then move on.

Disappointing as this was for Chair fans, it was relatively well done. My only caveat will be if Chuck reverts to his old ways and meddles in their relationship next season.

If he's going to mature and let her go, he has to really let her go.

Do you think Blair and Louis will have their happily ever after? Or will the relationship and life as a princess lose its luster, ultimately leading B back to her Dark Knight?

At this point, it's hard to want Blair and Louis to fail. The way Chuck and Blair ended things Monday night gave them both closure. Maybe now they can finally move on.

The fate of Chuck and Blair (and Louis and Blair) is something we will debate all summer long and potentially beyond, and I'm dying to hear what you all think about it.

As for the rest of the fourth season finale ... wow. That was a lot thrown at us, yet relatively little at the same time. Story arcs wrapped quickly, then new ones began.

When we left her last week, Charlie stopped taking her mystery meds. At the start of the finale, Dan is trying to find her, while Chuck is alarmed and looking for Blair.

B is trapped atop Charles Place with Russell Thorpe, who appears to be trying to set the whole place on fire via some gas leak. They sell gasoline too, man. Just saying.

Then be still my heart, Michelle Trachtenberg graces the screen as Georgina.

OM-G is Back

I have to say, Michelle had some of the show's funniest dialogue in a long time. She and Jack Bass have really made the last two weeks for me. It was great to have her back.

Why was Georgina even there? Presumably because of the alumni event? Did she even go to Constance? All unclear, but she's so shady and hilarious it could not matter less.

Watching her subtly reference her antics while clamoring to be a part of the scheme was so funny, I couldn't wait to see what happened next (not always the case this season).

What she does next is direct reeling Charlie to the nearest open window. Nice, G!

Up on the roof, Blair clandestinely calls Chuck from her pocket (he's still #1 on speed dial!!!!!) to reveal her location and the gang busts Russell in approximately 15 seconds.

Chuck and Blair decide to get a drink to calm her nerves before he delivers her to Louis, but they wind up getting it on at a Bar Mitzvah. Don't even ask. But it was awesome.

With Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" echoing in the background, Chuck and Blair pretended to be Jewish, then stopped pretending they don't belong in each other's arms naked.

This isn't just love, it's complicated, intense, all-consuming magnetism. Maybe it can't sustain itself long-term, but if nothing else, they gave us one heck of a last hurrah.

Meanwhile, Serena finds Charlie about to plunge to her doom. Charlie says every girl wants to be Serena and every guy wants to date her. This triggers something in S.

She decides she's really letting herself down by not making her own choices and decides (with a little help from the headmistress) to do something for herself this summer.

Charlie is fine all of a sudden, and Georgina, who had to have a reason for hanging around besides making me laugh, either knows or is suspicious she wasn’t ever on meds.

G was right. Turns out that Charlie is really a girl named Ivy and was being paid by Carol to ensure the Van Der Woodsens wouldn’t come after her ever again. Okay then.

The plot holes here are too numerous to count, so let's just hold off until next fall. Kaylee Defer is a cast member now, and "Ivy" has G's number. Let the crazies unite!

Finally, Vanessa finds Dan’s manuscript and calls him a sellout for not publishing it. He calls her a bad friend. She steals the book and has it published, anonymously.

"Where do I send the checks," asks an editor. Because it's that easy to get a book published. Oye. We love Dan, but wow, this is some bad writing. The show's, not his.

Then again, Vanessa did leave for Spain, so this plot line was a net positive.

Interesting Serena Scene

Fast forward three weeks and story arcs are being tied up left and right. Blair is headed to Monaco to get married, and she’s still being friendly with Dan and with Chuck.

Charlie returns to Florida but longs for NYC. Eric is going off to college, but first, to the Hamptons with Dan. Chuck and Nate are embarking on an epic global adventure.

Serena heads to California to do nothing on the beach. She needs to be alone in Malibu, only to get a job in the movies when a famous director happens to walk past her.

Oh, and there's a positive pregnancy test in the trash Dorota removes as we fade to black! Could be Blair carrying the baby of Louis ... or Chuck?! Is it even B's test?

Quite the cliffhanger to leave us with after a finale that was already pretty darn entertaining. The show went out on a high note and next season could be even better.

Who do you think the pregnancy test belongs to, and what developments are you most looking forward to next fall? Did you like the Gossip Girl season finale overall?

Did Chuck make the right decision? Is it really over for Chair? Was the season as a whole disappointing, or did it redeem itself by the end? So much to discuss. Go to it!

First, a quick poll: Did Chuck make the right decision letting Blair go?

I loved it and I hated it ... all for the same reasons. The only things that stick out in my mind ate Chair, Blouis, and Dair. I hope its a Chair baby. I think if anything Blair might miscarry. Be hard to hide a bun on that tiny body. If it is Serena, that would explain her solo trip. But if u are preggers why are jumping the first guy you walk past? Plus, I don't think it out of character for Blair to cheat... Blair made out with Chuck when she was dating Marcus. Also, Blair is queen of denial. So I wouldn't put it past her to non react about a Chaby ( chair baby ). Guess we will have to wait and see....

@AugustBaby Thank you for noticing that Blair didn't make the decision to be with Louis; Chuck did. I actually think that Blair chose Chuck, though I don't think she was thinking rationally at the moment. Even though it kills me to hear Chuck saying, "I need to let you go", it's probably the most mature and unselfish thing he's done these whole 4 years.

I love Blair, and i agree its very out of character for her so therefore her cheating on Louis wouldn't just be for the sake of sleeping with Chuck.
We all have learn't that everything in GG has a meaning. I was backing Louis even though i love Chair but after watching this, i was dying for Chair to get together.
I would love a Chair baby - people saying about abortion i don't think Blair could ever get rid of Chucks baby she loves him too much and even though she loves louis, her love for Chuck overides everything. But i do agree with some suspions that Dair will be back and maybe around the baby? Theres a lot to explore there, i think when Blair does end it with Louis which we all know will happen - she will be at a low, humilated if they go along the lines of her telling Louis its his - perhaps his mother finds out and wants a DNA test you just never know. Charlie i was shocked but even though it was very clever sometimes i just think god, can't they just give everyone a break. Love the pregnancy story line etc but i know its GG, and theres a twist around every corner.

Oh Em Gee!!! Serena is Pregnant with the teachers baby!!! She was the one acting weird! Not Blair and that story closed up way too easily... Blair would def be on birth control. duh! The sex scene was there to shake things up and keep us guessing all summer but I would bet it's hers. She needs time to reflect... and she has been kinda weird the last few episodes!!

Blair didn't really make the choice on her own, did she? I mean she was going to leave Louis, but Chuck persuaded her to be happy with Louis and live her fairytale. So, I don't think Blair really made a decision... As far as the episode as a whole. It was okay. I just thought more of the kidnapping scheme would have taken place. It kind of just ended with Chuck, Nate and Raina rushing to the rescue. I just seem rushed and unresolved, although, I know it is resolved. Glad Vanessa is leaving, but since she is getting the manuscript published, I guess she will never truly be gone due to an angry Dan searching for her. Georgina is always fun, but why was she there? Yes. Yes, she is setting up future storylines, but her presence was kind of awkward. Oh well, whatever. Season five Georgie better bring the fun and mischief! Charlie...didn't see that one coming. I could've cared less for that particular arc, but knowing now who she isn't, this will be interesting. I am glad Serena was actually shown as being smart. Her love of Fitzgerald is finally being put to good use. Good for her...and speaking of S, I think it is she that is with child. Why? Well, the producers have already said that eventhough Ben's storyarc is resolved, that doesn't close the door on a possible Ben return. Also, Blair being pregnant is too obvious because she sleep with Louis and Chuck, many weeks apart. Aaaannnnddd those very same producers have said that Dan and Blair will have interaction in the fifth season. Wouldn't a baby put a damper on that? Anyway, Serena's behavior and lackluster attempt at smacking down Blair was so uninspired that the only explanation could be her hormones are out of whack. Lackluster ending to a lackluster season. I hope I remember to watch the season premiere cause I am not anxious with anticipation to what will happen. So, I guess we will wait and see this fall. I know I can wait.

Last week, I'm all for Louis, but after watching this episode. It felt crap to even think about Louis and Blair together. Chuck and Blair, indeed have a great love. I cried when they broke up, it feels like Hell. Seriously! :| I can't stop crying. I can't believe, I'm saying this :))) I'm starting to like Dan. The lonely boy is an ultimate insider! And he is definitely in love with Blair Waldorf. Yey! Looking forward for the next season! Baby bass rocks!

This episode was awesome but I think many viewers missed all the Dan and Blair stuff!! Vanessa said someone would be happy with the way they were portrayed and I don't mean Serena! Obv she means Blair!! Louis is Adorable but lets face it... if Blair marries him GG doesn't have many places to go with Blair. I think they'll follow through with the wedding cuz that would be an amazing episode and then Louis will meet a tragic end ... Dan's book is released and BOOM!! Let the magic happen... :)

I think that is not Eleanor's test Why would she take on Blair's oom.. It can be either Serena's or Blair's. If it is Blair's maybe she'll have an abortion. I can't wait to see what's next!!!

ts very rare nowadays that the Chairfan in me wakes up. I am right now on Team Blouis. I think Louis is perfect for B, He is the most adorable prince ever-I loved the Chuck-Louis scene in this episode. However today I felt the Chair fan in me rise a little- It was that lil scene when Chuck lets B go- Maybe it was nostalgia , maybe I just kept on thinking of past seasons. I loved that scene. I loved how interestingly they showed that Chuck and Blair both knew that they were a mess, that they would always be a mess. And how that knowledge never deterred them for being with each other The great loves are the crazy ones. And how for once Chuck Bass stopped being selfish and realised that he wasnt good for her. That he didnt make her happy. This was the CB I last glimpsed in season 2. The scene reminded me of Chuck letting Blair go cuz he could make her happy even though he loved her. It also reminded me of another epic CB scene- where Chuck says that they couldnt be together because they will mess each other up. Love isnt enough. Especially a love that is so intense and dark. A love which is almost unconditional from B's side for a man like Chuck who is selfish and complicated. But I am glad that finally the writers gave us chair scene which signifies Chair as what they are - a mess and a beautiful mess at that. I loved the goodbye- They had this haunted feel of yester years and of letting go of something really dear and precious. Thank you to writers for a fitting Chair closure scene !!

@DamonSalvatore-is-a-God totally on the same page!! Let's hope the writers are, too!

Gossip Girl Season 4 Episode 22 Quotes

Chuck: You really love him, don't you?
Blair: Yes. But not like I love you. Louis and I, it's different. It's lighter, more simple. He makes me happy.
Chuck: And I don't?
Blair: What we have is a great love. It's complicated. Intense. All-consuming. No matter what we do and how much we fight, it'll always pull us in. What's mere happiness in the face of all that, right?

Chuck: There's a difference between a great love and the right love. I left the Empire State Building last year after two minutes when you didn't show. Louis waited all night. This is your chance at happiness. You think you shouldn't want it 'cause you've never had it and it scares you. But you deserve your fairytale.
Blair: We make our own fairytales.
Chuck: Only when we have to.
