Severely decreased screen time, trashified personality and maybe death. Those were the ways Shonda used to destroy several previous GA characters so fans wouldn't miss them and I think those are what we can expect to happen to Shepard next season.

I agree with the rest of you... I love Grey's, but it feels like Season 8 should be the end. I want it to end on a high note. I don't want it to just keep dragging on.

I could deal with Izzy leaving...it was hard enough with George leaving, but Derek??? Really??? the show will lose it's spark without him!!! why are all the good ones going????? make it stop!!!!

I'll still watch. The thing is I don't know how it will work if Patrick leaves but Ellen doesn't. If there is a MerDer break up Shonda is going to piss off A LOT of fans.
If both Patrick/Ellen do leave after season 8, I can see S8 being a very heavy MerDer season, so they get a proper send off. I also see it being a fairly heavy Lexie season, since she is a Grey she will be the Grey in Grey's Anatomy if Ellen leaves.
I do think the show will be able to continue if Partick/Ellen leave IF the writers and Shonda handle it well. ER continued for several seasons after major chracters left, so can Grey's, if the writers can handle well.

Okay, I OF COURSE consider it VERY SAD if not DEVESTATING that Patrick Dempsey, and therefore his character Derek, will be out after the next season. And I completely understand that the show won't be the same, and that Shonda might not want to move on after this, BUT...! ...
If they continue to a ninth season, would you just STOP WATCHING? So, you will never find out what happens to the others? Is that how much you care about GA?? Okay,so Derek disappears and perhaps Meredith too. But what about Lexie, Alex, Jackson, Callie, Mark...? Seriously, would you stand the thought of don't watch the show and miss to see more of them?
I mean, we thought the show would be really sad and so after Izzie and George disappeared, but it survived! And yes,we will cry a whole lot, but still, GA will still be GA, just without some of the people we love.

i will still watch it i love callie,cristina,and lexi more than derek he is number 11 on my list of favorite charaters list. If Callie if she leave i mostly likely not watch but i will still always love it..

Why are they even considering carrying on, it's almost as if ending the show is an impossibility. They should just make season 8 the one that blows people away and tie up all loose ends and leave it to rest. I blame ABC who also extended LOST by three seasons just to get their hands on some money and with a show like Grey's Anatomy which does not have a planned ending, there is more of a possibility to drag it on despite the fact that viewers will disappear.
If they carry it on after any of the original cast members leave, I would still watch it for the writing, directing and music but the story would suffer a tremendous blow.

I look forward to McDreamy's gorgeous face each Thursday night! If he leaves and Ellen Pompeo does too, the show will continue, but it just won't be the same. They are the original romantic couple of the series. Young love and we saw it blossom episode by episode. No one can take their places. He'll always be McDreamy to his fans!!

Wow... Totally thought the poll results would be the other way...
I think that if Patrick leaves, Ellen will leave too and then the show would loose a great deal of viewership and slowly dwindle. But through all of that I will watch... I think they should end it after Season 8.
For me the show was about their lives through their surgical residency at SGH. They are going into the 5th year of residency... The season can end with them choosing their fellowships and have a flash forward to Mer, Christina and Alex being surgeons and being the best they can be.
They should show Mark Callie and Arizona sending Sofia off to school, Bailey becoming Chief and doing her thing. we should also hear that Izzie died some tragic horrible way... lol... Everything should just come full circle and it should end. Shonda shouldn't prolong Grey's just to cash in. She should go back to the drawing board and create a new series... Grey's had its run...

Not messing with the relationship. I love the fact that despite the problems,they are still together. But, the show must go on.

No, I won't watch the show without Patrick Dempsey. No hesitation. I'll watch him in his other projects. Grey's won't last without him but unfortunately they won't get it until it happens. They weren't able to figure it out for the last two seasons. I'm angry, they ruined a really great show.....

There is no way I would way Greys without Patrick or Ellen, they are the heart of the show. That's how it all started,they and the interns, it really doesn't matter how many other characters are brought in the interest is in Meredith and Derek. Here's hopeing that Shonda asks them to stay and they say year,if not let's not have anyone die or divorce, just simply transfer them and the baby to another hospital.

I hate Derek, so I didn't vote. Of course I'd watch without him, but I don't see Ellen Pompeo sticking around in that situation, and that would be the clincher.

If or when Patrick Dempsey leaves Grey's Anatomy, the character Derek Shepherd will go with him. No one can be McDreamy but Patrick. If Shonda decides to kill Derek off, she may give Meredith a new love interest but it would be after a long period of grieving, Derek is Meredith's soul mate and she will be lost without him. I can see Meredith and Mark becoming very close, because Mark is Derek's best friend and Meredith will look to him for support in her time of grief.
I would continue watching only if Meredith does stay, if anything happens to Derek she will be more dark and twisty then she was in the beginning.
Season 8 is going to be very interesting to watch. Filming starts in July, hopefully we will get more goss then, when photos merge on the upcoming Season 8 Premiere. And will it follow tradition and be a 2 hour premiere, and will it be a 22 or 24 episode Season or will it make 27 just to end all the lose ends?

Don't think I would watch it when Derek and Meredith leave it's bad enough that they keep make split up because in no relationship does any body split up has much has they, I only what it because of them, this is the 1st programme I have got in to watching and got on DVDs and that is something I don't buy, when they leave I won't be carrying on watch it. It would be nice to see them have family and all work out. Sorry it's a no for me.

I only watch now because of him and that is difficult at best. GA would be impossible to endure if Patrick left.

He's by far the best actor on the show and biggest star.
He's the ONLY reason I'm still watching. So if he's gone, so am I!

Absolutely, YES I will watch with or with out MERDER. There is so much talent on this show...and I never thought it existed to just showcase that one couple. I love Chandra Wilson, Sandra OH, and my personal favs, Sara Ramirez and Jessica Caphaw. I can totally see the Lexie and Mark relationship continue to do what it does, and unlike other fans...I embrace the new characters. Everthing must change...and I welcome it!
