I agree with you completely! The story was simultaneously lacking in substance and over the top melodramatic -- if that's even possible. And I couldn't help but roll my eyes when Mike's dad at the beginning of the episode said "Being in glee club is detrimental to getting into Harvard." Right. Because universities HATE extracurriculars and well-rounded students. I thought this was nonsensical. Also...while I love Coach Beiste...I feel bad for her. I feel like the writers / Ryan Murphy sometimes make her look like an animal with her eating habits...they seem to back-handedly mock a lot of the heavier characters like this. Just my opinion. Anyway, bravo on your review. I do like glee on a basic level (as I'm sure you do) but I think the plot has become totally illogical and I have to turn off all brain activity to be able to watch the show without thinking "wait a minute...what? that makes no sense."

I guess I have been watching a different show because it's always been clear to me Mr Sue favors Rachel more. She is always the lead and even though Mercedes tries to be a diva she is never center stage. Merecedes should have been the only Maria, but because the show is focused more on Rachel she has to share the spolight. Both are great singers but just in different ways. And sometimes they have to take a step back Whitney and Barbra have to have their fair share on times to shine.

...I think you mean 'Who deserves the role of Maria?'
I agree with the comments so far...We were already told that this episode was fantastic and then it got a semi-poor review. I definitely disagree, considering the episode seemed strong for the show.
My first issue was this idea that the episode had to be centralized around one character. Since when do episode's have to be around one character? Each of these characters had good stories and it was great the writers explored them. It was awesome to get more of a background on both Emma and Mike. In addition, Mercedes may have deserved the part, but Rachel definitely would make a great Maria and they saw that from the beginning. I expected them to be double casted early on. Believe or not, double casting happens a lot and typically, it doesn't go over well. I'm not surprised she walked out.
Santanna randomly coming back. Can't excuse that one. However...
The fantastic performances themselves deserve a higher rating. Not to mention some really well done moments with mike and his
I loved tonight's episode, I will agree it went from one story to the other and got a bit confusing(Santana back in Glee) but it was awesome like always. I loved the Maria show down but Mercedes should have gotten the role. I want more Brittana:)

@AJ: I was kidding. I know who Carl is. I was just making a reference to how mishandled that storyline was.

@linda: The talent is undeniable. I just thought it tried to do way too much at once.

This episode showed the wealth of talent in this cast. Yes now we all want a Mike episode, and then an Emma show this just gave us the footing to do just that. Enjoy!!!!!!

I completely disagree. I loved this episode. The only part I didn't like was Mercedes. She needs to chill. Everyone freaks when Rachel is self-centered but she is just as self-centered. I've seen many high school shows where parts are double casted. A friend's show was almost completely double casted a few years ago. I didn't like that they didn't have anyone read for parts. That would have been a better tie breaker. Maybe Rachel/Mercedes can sing but she can't act.
