Private Practice Exclusive: Paul Adelstein on Cooper's Reaction to Paternity Shocker

at . Comments

Simply put, viewers were treated to a Cooper, duper surprise at the conclusion of this week's Private Practice:

Former My So-Called Life star AJ Langer showed up as Erica, an ex-girlfriend of Paul Adelstein's Cooper... and the mother of his alleged son, Mason!

Surprise, Cooper!

"I was really excited about it," Adelstein told me of his own reaction to reading this storyline for the first time. "It was not where I expected the season to be going. But it's a great, juicy bit of writing for Charlotte and Cooper."

That's for sure. The actor says Erica and Mason's presence "pushes a lot of buttons" for his character and Charlotte, starting with one question, as cynical as it may be: Is Mason actually his son?

"Everyone, from Charlotte to his friends, thinks he's crazy for not getting a paternity test," Adelstein says of what's on tap. "But he avoids it. Call it a willing naivete, but Cooper has an instant connection with this kid and he just wants it to be so."

Of course, as Adelstein also admits, "it's not just a relationship with an eight-year old boy." There's a former lover in the picture now, along with Cooper's wife.

"It's complicated," the actor laughs. "I wanna say it's a triangulation, but there are more people involved. Call it a 'quadrangulation.' I may have just made up a word, but it fits."

God, aren't people too paranoid about some banner?

@MissKitten - Replaced. I apologize but it was very tough to find a high resolution current cast photo. I had to email ABC for this one!

Don't give a damn about stupid people who have nothing to do but attack REAL GREAT work like you people do with this website. I'm from Spain and I LOVE TVFanatic, think you're amazing. Keep working so hard, I'm really grateful

WHY haven't you guys done anything to that stupid banner already? It doesn't truly reflect Private Practice considering it's for two GREY'S episodes. I have a feeling the only reason you chose it was so that you could hide Vi and Coop behind those boxes...

I hate this. I used to like Cooper but I hate his reaction. He is nuts to drop everythingfor a kid that hopefully is not his. The kid isn't even cute and the mother has a big brown wart on her cheek-disgusting. Private Practice usually has hot and good looking cast. Why hire them.

From Cooper's POV, you get why he doesn't want to do a paternity test because the idea of his own child is something he doesn't want to ruin. I hate this storyline because I'm all for Charlotte and Cooper's happiness. Now that this storyline's being introduced, I'm just hoping that they go for a few episodes without him getting a paternity test only to find out later on that he isn't really his son. I don't want this kid and his mom to become a permanent fixture in Charlotte and Cooper's relationship.

Cooper is nothing more than a manchild who found himself an 8year old boy toy to play with.

You got some facts wrong. It's not his ex-girlfriend or ex-lover. She's a slut that (slut says) he got drunk with and screwed in the backseat of her car. He doesn't even remember her. For all we know the slut is making it all up and looking for a baby daddy who's a rich doctor. He doesn't want a paternity test because he's a sucker for a stray kid.

Cooper's insane for not wanting a paternity test. Cooper has gone from one of my favorite's to my least favorite this seson. He's been annoying and obnoxious. This storyline with AJ Langer is likely to cause the downfall of the show. The ratings are marginal and fans hate this story line, a recipe for disaster.

I am sick of hearing about Erica and Mason . I don't care fo AJ Langer or her character and can not wait for this to be over and her to leave Private Practie. Enough of this BS.

Private Practice Quotes

Charlotte: My mom always says God doesn't give with both hands. You're young, beautiful, brilliant. There has to be something you can't have.
Amelia: Some days I'd give that all up.
Charlotte: That's just the craving talking. The longer you go without a drink...
Amelia: I drank at your wedding. I thought it was ginger ale. I spit it out.
Charlotte: OK, since then?
Amelia: Nothing, but I can't stop thinking about it.
Charlotte: It was an accident. Don't let a slip turn into a fall. Get your butt to a meeting.

Having a conscience is brutal.
