Terra Nova Review: Power of Deception

at . Comments

"The Runaway" was definitely a bounce back episode for Terra Nova. There was excitement, there was intrigue and it kept the viewers on their toes about what was really going on. It sure was a step back in the right direction for this dino crew.

It doesn't surprise me at all that an episode directed by executive producer Jon Cassar was mainly dealing with spies, moles and deception. As one of the forces behind 24, Cassar helped run a show that exposed its audience to more mole plots than any other in history.

Seeking Asylum

The deception during this week's story had me predicting end results in every-which-way, making it the best single episode plot of the series so far. Also, it didn't hurt that the little runaway was A-DORE-A-BLE.

First. the runaway seemed to be afraid for her life, then all of the sudden she was dirty as all Hell sneaking away with Mira's box, and finally we find out it was all just to protect her brother. The fact that she was only doing it to save her sibling was more heartwarming, but much less interesting.

I was hoping that she was either assisting Mira and the Sixers on her own because she was an evil little girl, or that she was helping Mira and the Sixers because she thought that they were the good guys. The grey area in which the viewer can't truly tell which side is good and which side is evil would be a great place to take this series.

That theme continued when Jim made his way into Sixer territory to find the girl's brother. Mira explained to Jim that she is doing what she is doing because some powerful people back in 2149 want her to take out Commander Taylor. She and those back in the 22nd century don't believe any of his "starting over" crap. Mira then kindly lets Jim go with the boy.

While this new information about Mira and the Sixers was definitely more intriguing than anything we learned in the previous two episodes, I again wish it was more than just fighting for a family member. The powerful people of 2149 may help her see her family again, but I'm sure there is more to that story, which is why I am excited to see what happens next.

24 was great at introducing the fact that there was a mole, sidelining the story for a bit, and then bringing it back later on to surprise you. This was executed to perfection the show's first season with Nina Myers. I wouldn't be surprised at all, and would actually prefer it, if the mole thing died down for a few weeks, and we find out later on who it is.

Right now, the series seems to be pointing the finger at Dr. Malcolm, so I hope it doesn't end up being that obvious choice. At this point, I would love to see it turn out to be Maddie's suitor Reynolds. I would enjoy a nice Taylor/Reynolds interrogation session.

I thought "The Runaway" was a definite improvement over the past couple of episodes, and I'm certainly excited to see what happens next. Before letting us know what you thought of the episode, let me know where I can find that 22nd century Etch a Sketch.

*sigh* So many criticisms & comparisons about TN not being LOST, 24, FLASH FORWARD, blah, blah, blah. It just highlights all these commenters lack of imagination because apparently, some of you cannot think outside a box you've already seen. Get over the shows that are gone. They're DONE, and all your whining isn't going to bring them back. TN is doing fine for a young series. It's only 5 episodes old, and is getting better with each episode. I could do with more Taylor & Washington. But, I understand that making the audience want more of a character is better than wanting one gone (*cough* Josh *cough*). No one's mentioned the irony of Sixer Mira emotionally blackmailing a little girl just like she was blackmailed, which is rather despicable IMO. Also, it's a point in Taylor's favor that there are no lawyers in TERRA NOVA. Farmers, biologists, doctors, engineers, security forces, even weavers are more key to human survival at this point in the TN story than a lawyer IMO.

WOW This is one of the best shows on TV!!!! Keeps me on the edge every week, I hope it's here to stay

We know whop the mole is!
Its the bartender! He have the son a job, and then went and gave some stuff to Mira!

I really like this show and I think each episode has just gotten better and better. I like all the main actors without exception. Skye was a bit annoying in the pilot, but she's gotten more likable in recent episodes. I like how there are so many angles to the storyline, too. You can have dino drama, family drama, teenager drama, military drama, scientific drama, all in one show. I really like how it's not ALL about the dinosaurs. Keep it up. Leah reminded me of NEWT from Aliens, by the way!

There needs to be more drama in the show.. The mysteries must be built upon in each episode but they don't give you enough information. Too many children, too much time with the family, it feels too safe. Lost had an element of danger in whatever they did and the writers used the "others" to good effect for the first couple of seasons. I'd like to see a show from the sixers perspective. Mira said that powerful people in the future want Taylor dead but why not a scene where you hear her communications with the future? What about the writings by the waterfalls? I want to know more about the spy too as they already have a few possibles in Terra Nova.. I'm frustrated that a good concept for the show is not being fulfilled due to bad writing. I know it's more difficult not to watch old Stargate episodes for ideas but surely some creative thoughts float around.

I love the show. I think its really interesting and i think the plot is only just getting started. You people are so harsh. I do agree that maybe the characters could be more... deep. I would like it to be more intense, scary and exciting but i think its a good show. I think you all need to give it a chance. Honestly. Calm you farm would you? Who knows, maybe they'll listen to you and the show will get better but for now i think its great!

I gave this show one more chance, because the trailer had a hint of promise, but after watching this week's episode I'm done! Too much kissy-kissy/smiley-smiley. The two main characters are insincere caricatures who remind me of the couple on Ghost Whisperer...just as bland. Too many cute kids that don't behave like real kids. The camp (in the middle of a primeval jungle) looks like Armstrong's Garden Center with its potted palms and nicely paved aisles. Come to think of it, some of the jungle scenes appear to have been filmed in a garden center as well. I'm out!!!

My initial thought was that it is Reynolds, just because he seems super innocent, but past hints indicate it could be Skye. Remember in the pilot episode when the kids tried to get into the Sixers' vehicle, and Skye says "Remember me? Skye?" and then the guy lets them in as a result? I never got why. That could be a hint that she is the mole. She's a capable person and has apparently escaped several times before from Terra Nova without being caught (they had an alcohol stop set up already when we saw Josh escaping). Also, her parents are simply "gone" (perhaps Sixers?) and she is in the perfect position for intel as Taylor's seeming adoptive daughter. Plus, we'd get some "oh, how I was betrayed" drama from Josh.

This episode is an improvement comparing to previous 4 but then there is another child added to show..... when will the writers realize Terra Nova is merely another summer camp rather than a small human colony in a primeval world to the kids in their stories!?
