The Secret Circle Review: Two Key Rules

at . Comments

In the first episode to not involve any adult cast member, the coven members found out exactly how serious and deadly things are getting with their magic.

We shared concerns last week that The Secret Circle might suffer from not being as action-packed/fast-paced as The Vampire Diaries. "Heather," though, proved it can play with the big kids just fine, thank you.

From the absence of any adult cast members, to the haunted house feel of Adam Barnes’ residence, ending with the wind-blown chase through Cassie’s home, this installment had all the classic markings of a Halloween popcorn-muncher. It even gave me a craving for candy.

Teaming Up for Magic

Oddly, using the classic tropes of slasher films worked. Having an episode sans adults and dedicated to the six members of the Circle allowed us to focus on how they are interacting and getting used to being bound together, depending on each other. A few things stood out for me:

Diana is going to clearly be the voice of reason. I’m not sure she will remain the top dog once Cassie is up to speed, but she is clearly the one that will think things through and point out the pitfalls.

Apparently we traded grumpy Nick in for a much more romantic and caring Nick. Please tell me we can keep him. Watching him and Melissa together this week made me hopeful they will make it to full boyfriend/girlfriend status.

Speaking of Melissa, I know that Jessica Parker Kennedy is in her mid-twenties. But, should they really be focusing on her cleavage and designer bra given the character herself is in high school?!? Don’t get me wrong, Kennedy is absolutely lovely. I’m just not sure if Andrew Miller and his team have thought through the message they might be sending.

I almost thought Faye was softening a little bit when she apologized to Melissa at the restaurant, sadly I was mistaken. I’m curious if almost being choked out by a demon possessed woman will make her want to play nice with the other witches. Nah, probably not.

Then we come to Cassie and Adam. Cassie tried so hard not to be alone with Adam and there Diana went, pushing him on to her.  I’m telling you right now, Diana. When Adam and Cassie finally give in and hook up, you have nobody to blame but yourself.

Just last week Diana and Cassie had a long talk about Diana’s worries and fears. She has to be a much stronger person than I am to follow those fears up by sending the two out alone

Finally, if we learned nothing else this week, we learned the following rules:

  1. Never do magic you don’t fully understand.
  2. Never, ever, ever do magic you don’t fully understand!

I love this show and really wish ppl would stop comparing it to Vampire Diaries and let it find its way. I think its got all the right elements to be an awesome show I loved this last episode looking forward to next week already :)
Adam is soo cute I think him nd Cassie have great chemistry.

Why is it on almost every show I'm liking the secondary characters then main ones! I like how Diana is the leader. But at the same time she lets her guard down to Cassie and Adam. Faye maybe the bad girl with an attitude. But we all know deep down inside she cares. Nick may have his issue's and that maybe because of both his parents dying. But He wants to change for Melissa. Melissa is a such a cutie and she as some insecurities. But I like how she starting to stand up for herself. As far as a Romantic relationship. Cassie and Adam doesn't seem to do for me.
But I'm liking the chemistry between Melissa and Nick.

Very awesome ep... Liked the intensity mixed with the heavy soppy scenes. not so sure where the season is headed but hope its gonna be good.

i know that the books dragged it for the entire trilogy but this is TV, it has to be faster paced, i wish this thing with Cassie and Adam will get an outlet by the end of this season, i will not survive more than one season of lonesome stares and awkward silence and inconvenient moments. seriously, i will quit.

i liked when Adam said "That's what friends do" to Cassie. he really cares for her!! he came back her house and helped her clean up. it's so thoughtful!!it's just a matter of time before they really make out!! can't wait...

I'm ready for Cassie and Adam to hook up like yesterday! Diana is so boring I feel like she has a superiority complex and she deserves to have her man run off with the new witch because she keeps setting them up knowing they have this cosmic bond between them so come on Cassie and Adam!!! Loved Cassie's response to the Adam's question last night. Adam: "Gotta broom?" Cassie: " Of course, I am a witch." Nice little comic relief after such an intense episode.

I don't understand why Diana keeps pushing Adam onto Cassie either! Is she testing him?? Either that or she's really stupid, it makes no sense!

So, did I misunderstand or were the parents who died still in their teens (didn't that newspaper article say something about 'x teens killed in fire') when the accident happened? Because if they were, isn't it weird that 12 kids in high school suddenly all got kids at the same time? I probably got it wrong.

i like the episode so far, but i think cassie and adam chemistry it been force, i dont feel it, nick and melissa have chemistry together. just my thought...

i loved this episode i think it was the best one so far.i didn't really understand why dianna wanted adam to go with cassie if she's so worried about the two hooking up.i like seeing nick and melissa together and hope they become boyfriend and girlfriend.i liked how faye helped cassie do the spell even though doing the spell almost got them killed and faye only helped her because she wanted to read cassies's book but when she helped and they didn't think it worked she was nice and was sorry it didn't work she wasn't all obsessed with the magic like she's been and she wasn't mean like she had been a little in the other episodes.i like how the show is more realistic then other shows because they act the way you would really act if you were a witch and they don't know everything and they don't pretend to know everything which makes the show better.i liked how at the end when adam came to see cassie he said that she was righ to want to know what happened in the fire and that he was on her side even though dianna isn't becuase heather was a demon and they now know this is way bigger than them and they have know idea what there dealing with.i can't wait till the next episode it looks so good.

The Secret Circle Season 1 Episode 4 Quotes

Faye: Don't be that pathetic girl who thinks "he will change for me," they never change.
Melissa: Ok I got it, he's a loser, I'm a loser, feel better?

Some things should be done without magic.
