Hart of Dixie Review: Out of Her Shell

by at . Comments

Poor George Tucker. No matter what you tell Lemon while recovering from a crossbow injury and, heck, no matter what you tell yourself, "The Crush and the Crossbow" made one thing clear: you are not just fine.

Far from it, in fact, as the best Hart of Dixie episode of the season gave Team George members plenty of reason to cheer. It also opened Zoe up a bit. Everyone loves Rachel Bilson's doctor, but she's mostly served as a source for New York snark over the last few weeks.

Hart of Dixie Tandem

Here, inspired by the notion that her life is on pause, Zoe leaped out of her shell and gave us a glimpse into the vulnerable woman that her ex of six years scarcely ever saw. Like Addie's take on conversation during an ideal first date, this hour simply flowed. Among the highlights:

Zoe's flashcards. Why are you on death row? Can doctors wear shorts? Team Jacob or Team Edward? Great stuff, but also confusing stuff. I've never understood the argument for Edward. Jacob has more of a personality and much better abs.

The use of town folk. It's a theme I've been championing for awhile, and here we were treated to lines from the mailman, Addie's sheriff husband and those lovely ladies on the bench. Well done, Hart of Dixie. Keep throwing in these cameos and Bluebell will really come to life.

A turtle race. Forget UFC, Fox. This is what you clearly should be putting on primetime. Who didn't love Lavon getting into his play-by-play role, at one point giving a competitor props for flipping back on to his feet and "playing through pain." Yes, I'm a sports nut who can never get enough of sports terms being used outside the typical sports realm. Sue me.

Shelly Long. That was the name of one of the turtles. Amazing.

Lavon and Lemon as co-hosts. I still don't buy these two were ever a couple. Viewers are simply being asked to accept their history, despite a lack of chemistry and a major lack of similarities between characters. Still, it was nice to see Lavon and Lemon having fun here. Every previous scene between them had been awkward and angst-filled. If Lemon really was a fun rule-breaker, as Lavon hinted at, and maybe something happened to set her back on the straight, southern path, that would be a story I'd be interested in learning.

Goe for it! Okay, their potential couple nickname needs work. (Zorge, perhaps?) But George took a major step this week in making up the substantial lead Wade holds over him in our poll. He and Zoe have a love for New York in common, along with whatever indescribable personality traits allow two people to simply feel comfortable with each other. I wish I could explain it better than that, but you all know what I mean, right? When it's right and you're open and honest, it can't always be explained with something as simple as a shared affection for Woody Allen. Although George and Zoe have that, too.

Hart of Dixie clearly must drag out this triangle for as long as possible, because that's what TV shows do, but no one can actually argue for Lemon at this point. George is simply happier when he's around Zoe, that much is clear.

On a sidenote, can Scott Porter get injured every episode? The guy is hilarious when in pain. And we can also assume Wade's comment about once blocking for his high school teammate was a nod to Jason Street, right? I miss 7.

The only downside of this episode? The name Judson. Or perhaps just the way Zoe pronounced it. I kept thinking she was saying Jetson and I kept waiting for a robot maid to appear. But that's a rather small complaint overall. This was a really fun, character-revealing installment. What did everyone else think?

Ilike lemon and george but want zoe and george. I do think zoe and wade have something, but think its more annoying each other yet kinda being friends or friends with benefits without true love

Farsia2010

God this frustrating!!! No matter how they try to spice George up, Wade is sooooo much more attractive as a character and way more multilayered! i know that they set the stage for George and Zoe to eventually be together but i just feel sorry for Wade, i want him to be happy and if it's Zoe he wants i want him to truly get her then.
on the whole:
1)great ep
2)Lemon is annoying no matter what they do with her and she really is not that pretty
3)George in pain truly is sooo much fun, i agree, it should happen more often and i don't care how sadistic that sounds.

I am one hundred percent Team Wade. Don't get me wrong, I love Scott Porter (and yes it has a lot to do with my undying love of all things FNL)...speaking of which...Street was 6, Saracen was 7...but I'm getting off topic. As good as this episode was, I don't approve of them forcing Zoe into anything with a character that we knew from the word go was involved with someone else. Zoe is trying to fit into this town, and they would virtually ruin her if they ended up having her be the reason that George breaks things off with Lemon. Lemon already hates Zoe, this would push her over the edge. I by no means am a Lemon fan, but I actually did enjoy her scenes with Lavon last night. I would love to get the backstory there, and knowing how CW shows work, we probably will. Gotta love the flashbacks. All in all I really did enjoy this episode. I've been cheering for Wade since the beginning and he looked absolutely crushed at the end last night. Hopefully the writers will see the light and put these two together soon!!

The best episode so far, loved the turtle race and the play by plays!!! Can't stand Lemon but she is tolerable around Lavon Hayes. I'm interested in a deep backstory there. I like George I really do, he's safe but slightly boring. He has some chemistry with Zoe and I think they're similar personality wise but I don't know about you but I don't wanna spend the rest of my life with the male version of myself. Wade has more then some chemistry with Zoe, were talkin tons. He isn't safe and is her opposite and she will need to grow up but its clear she needs him in the end. George is Edward and Stefan, Wade is Jacob and Damon. I'm all for the latter cuz they make the best fit. Joey and Pacey had a passion for life and couldn't live without each other, life isn't cookie cutter. Dityo for love and it sure as hell shouldn't be safe. BTW I love when George gets hurt the actor is f*cking hilarious when in pain. Oh and Wade broker my heart at the end, stupid Zoe!

Lack of continuity aside (text from last night: "this is like alternate reality fanfiction"), I am a George girl. He and Zoe have more OTP vibe to them when they actually have scenes together. Wade just seems like an irritant to me. With Judson back at the end of the ep, it seems like they're going for a Zoe Quadrangle. Who will win?
I love Scott Porter. (And it's 6, not 7 :)

Sorry, I don't see any chemistry between Zoe and George beyond friends. It's too predictable and boring. Funny i like George with Lemon, but i see he loves Lemon but he wants to spread his wings beyond BlueBell and Lemon is stuck in the past. I hope the show realizes its Wade and Zoe.Its so clear they are suited for each other

Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But I found last nights episode very random. And frankly, quite boring. The turtle stuff was funny. But other than that, the eppy felt all over the place. First: the wife...wouldn't that have been mentioned at some point by someone that Wade was once married. I mean it seems to be a very small, gossipy town. Then the George/Zoe stuff...that storyline came out of nowhere and I really don't like it. Not only do I find him to be too boring and perfect but why does she like him so much all of a sudden. So much that she has to cry and be depressed about it. To me it just felt totally out of place after they didn't seem to be on more than a friendly basis for the last few episodes. But I guess the writers of the show want it to happen, so it has to happen, even if I don't understand what they find so appealing. I prefer Wade, he seems like the most interesting character out of all of them and I personally find the guy to be just such a sweetheart. Well if Zoe doesn't want him because he isn't perfect, I am sure someone will gladly take him off her hands. :-)

Sorry, but I like Lemon, and would feel bad if George left her for Zoe. I am for Zoe and Wade all the way. Maybe if they give George more personality I would like him more. And I AM team Jacob LOL

Completely agree with 'L'. The writers just all of a sudden throw Zoe and George together and want to us to believe that they have AMAZING chemistry together and the conversation with him just 'flows'. And she's so taken with him after one day that she's now crying over her lost love?! Give me a break!!
Um...when has she ever had problems talking with Wade? She got 'comfortable' with him almost immediately. Sorry but I hope they take this triangle the way of Pacey/Dawson/Joey. George just urks me somehow. I think the Lavon/Lemon backstory is going to unfold gradually. Why do they have to explain it in the first 4 episodes? If they plan this show to go on for more than one season, you can't give everything away up front! Duh! Wade's sad puppy dog eyes at the end were too cute. Funny how Zoe was criticizing Wade for going after someone's fiancee....um, kettle...black.

I was pleasantly surprised by this episode. Though I have been rooting for Wade, I was glad to see some development to the Zoe and George arch. I just wish that the romantic developments of this show happened a lot faster. Either Zoe/Wade or Zoe/George seems like an actual turtle race.
