Once Upon a Time Review: Beware of Elf Potion

at . Comments

I've never trusted puppets. Now I know why. Once Upon a Time delved into the history of crickets and the truth behind puppets this week, as "That Still Small Voice" took some prodding to be heard.

Deputy Emma Stone. The Sheriff made it official. Emma was made deputy of Storybrooke, much to Regina's displeasure.

That was quite an eye argument Regina had with the Sheriff. There was so much said without saying a word. I think the Mayor might be making some budget cuts next time around.

I knew Emma being on the city payroll would shake things up, I just didn't know it would literally send tremors though the town.

That Still Small Voice Scene

Jiminy's Shady Past. I loved Jiminy's parents. Martin and Myrna reveled in their wicked ways and the two were great fun to watch. So how did such devilish characters produce such a wishy washy son?

Wishy washy might be harsh but Jiminy couldn't bring himself to walk away from his parents. Of course, they didn't ask for much. Just that he stay with them until they died. Leave it to Rumplestiltskin to figure out a way to hurry that inevitability along.

That poor couple were turned into hideously awful puppets for all eternity. They looked like something out of a creepy horror film and one look at them reminded me why I've never liked puppets. Not one bit.

I did love that Geppetto was the orphaned boy. That was a nice way to bring the story full circle.

In the end, Jiminy wished to be a cricket instead of who he was. Shouldn't there have been an easier way to follow his conscience?

Archie Grows a Set. When Archie finally emerged from that mine, he realized there might be scarier things than the powerful mayor. He even managed to find a little power of this own. It appeared that the former Evil Queen could make someone's life miserable but she didn't actually threaten Archie's life, so did that mean she can't actually kill anyone in Storybrooke?

Snow White's Heartache. The Evil Queen certainly made sure that curse would torture poor Mary Margaret. She was so close to her one true love, only to have to watch him with his wife. And she's nice too. I agree. Somehow that just made it worse.

When her Prince told her he felt their connection that only made it worse. He's married and recovering from a coma. His wife desperately wants him to remember. Mary Margaret did the only honorable thing. She walked away. Sometimes, honorable sucks.

So hold onto your umbrellas and keep a special eye on those puppets. Once Upon a Time will be back again next week for more fairy tale fun.

the wife that suddenly popped up aka Kathryn Nolan (played by Anastasia Griffith) was the same girl in the carriage from the episode "snow falls"...aka the 'fiance' Abigail that prince charming is desperately trying to get the ring back for.... I don't think it's fake that she loves him... but I don't think they are married either, because the ring charming got for abigail was actually the same ring Snow/Mary was wearing in the same episode in storybrooke... interesting...

Great episode! The facial expression exchange between the Sheriff and Mayor Regina was brilliant! So much was said in their faces. As a matter of fact, a lot of this show expresses much more in their facial expressions than other shows, which I really like! I enjoyed Jiminy's story! All of it - his terrible parents, the little boy being Geppetto, the horrific nature of that potion - all of it!!! I'm glad it went full circle, AND I'm glad he stood up to Regina. Snow/Mary Margaret's story is incredibly heart breaking. I wish I could fix things for her! It's just so sad. But the chemistry between Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas is really something special! I love it! I like the complexities of the show. I always find myself trying to piece together stories. It not only keeps me intrigued but also makes me feel like a couch potato/zombie! Onward with Operation Cobra...

I think maybe the broken glass is the Mirror, mirror on the wall ?

I do not like Once Upon a Time. It's a soap opera with a recurring story line where no one will ever find out who they are and if they even start to get clues as to their real identity something will happen to set them further back. The main antagonist makes you hate her but she makes you hate her too much, so much that I can't even stomach it any more.

At the very end of the episode when the Mayor throws the piece of glass down the shaft does anyone have ideas to what the glass belonged too? it looked as if it was the glass coffin snow was in during the pilot episode when charming woke her up

@LEAH Not sure. IMO, she knows a lot but not everything.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but does the Mayor remember who she is? She cast the spell but is she cursed too or does she remember who she really is?

speaking of LOST, did anyone notice the APOLLO chocolat bar jiminty found at the mine.....

Another satisfying episode of Once Upon A Time. I didn't see myself becoming a fan of the show when I first saw the previews for it this Summer. Glad I gave it a shot. No doubt about how Ms. Orlando feels about puppets. Just marionettes, or do Jeff Dunham's little buddies fall into the CREEPY category as well? Also got a kick outta Martin and Myrna. Reminded me a bit of Miracle Max and Valerie from Princess Bride. "Have fun storming the castle..." I'd have hoped by this point the writers would have stopped Emma from calling Henry, "Kid". They've developed enough of a relationship by now that she should feel comfortable with calling him, Henry. @ NEB: I'm with you on the Charming's Wife issue. Her sudden appearance so soon after Charming coming out of his coma seems like a bit too much of a coincidence. I'm amazed at how young Ginnifer Goodwin looks. I think she's 31 yrs. old, yet if I was a store clerk I'd still card her for cigarettes. For fans of the show, Grimm: Anyone notice that Emma and Eddie drive the same yellow Volkswagon Beetle?

Been, Kristen Van Straten from True Blood already played her in a previous episode; this is the same actress that played the annoying fiance when Snow and Charming met (so no, she is not Millicent). Great thought though, what a twist THAT could've been! While I do suspect the mayor is up to something, I don't think she is simply paying the wife. I bet it is something different. Thanks everyone for picking up on the little clues - I didn't watch Lost but love the homages. Have you also caught how great the names always are? Regina = from Latin for ruler/queen; Blanchard = blanc = white. Mr Hopper... Crickets hop. Love it! Great catch on the mine/dwarves too. Wonder if they have been trapped down there the while time? Henry saw something shiny by an entrance that was walled off. Love this show!

Once Upon a Time Season 1 Episode 5 Quotes

I didn't realize I was in Operation Cobra.

Archie: So all the crickets in Storybrooke, they're all people too.
Henry: There are no crickets in Storybrooke.
