The Vampire Diaries Review: Always and Forever?

at . Comments

When I was around eight years old, my older brother went to eat some cookies after dinner. I asked him for one. But he told me the box was empty. Later that night, I walked in to the kitchen and, what was my brother doing? That's right, eating more cookies from that same box!

I was really angry that he lied to me. Point being: Man, I really felt for Rebekah following the unfolding of events, past and present, on "Ordinary People."

Rebekah v. Elena

There's truly no worse feeling than betrayal. It can lead even the best of people to make the worst of decisions, and Klaus was never the best of people. He born a werewolf, a naturally aggressive creature who knew from as soon as he could think for himself that he was unlike anyone else. Literally. Anyone else on the planet.

Even those of us who stuttered in third grade could at least take comfort that there were others out there, somewhere, in the same predicament. Not so for Klaus. He was alone from the start and almost every choice he has made since has been to avoid that fate.

How ironic then. Multiple people now want Klaus to return. They desire his company, but only so they can end his miserable existence.

That's where things were left another terrific, flashback-based episode of The Vampire Diaries. How does this show know exactly when to throw these installments into the mix, and exactly how to twist the viewers' previously-held beliefs on their (spinning) heads? Let's go over what we learned, shall we?

Klaus is evil. Yes, we know that already. We just weren't aware of how evil until now. Sure, I understand where his darkness comes from, but the guy pulled his mother's heart out, blamed it on his step-father and lied to his siblings about it. That's just cold. There's no sympathy for the man here.

Rebekah is Elena 1.0. She loves "blindlessly and recklessly," Elena said of her new frenemy, even if it consumes here. She also lost her mother early in life. Remind you of someone else we know? Someone else with a very soft spot in her heart for Stefan Salvatore? Maybe when Klaus is dead, and Stefan isn't in Ripper mode, and ghosts aren't showing up to wreak havoc, and a hybrid army isn't on the horizon, and no witch spells are left to be cast... these two could get some frozen yogurt or something.

Elena has bad taste in dresses. I preferred the purple one.

Damon has a very high tolerance... for alcohol. But for dick-ish brothers? We'll soon find out. Can Stefan really want his freedom? Can he really want to remain such a jerk even when he's no longer compelled? It's worth noting how happy he truly does seem these days. That wasn't part of Klaus' compulsion. His only job is to protect Elena, but he seems legitimately pleased to be free from his humanity. Contrast that with the face Stefan typically made as an all-feeling vampire. You know the one. The Tuesday face.

Might he no longer want the burden of actually caring? It's sort of been a buzzkill for the guy.

Elijah rules! Okay, we didn't really learn that. Most of it have thought if for awhile. But who didn't give a little fist bump at his reappearance? He's the moral one. Rebekah is the stubborn one. Klaus is the vindictive one. Their cute Three Musketeers-esque scene was very well done, adding to the melancholy over all that has gone wrong between them since.

So, one episode remains - previewed HERE - before The Vampire Diaries takes a lengthy hiatus and returns on January 5. Mikael is awake and prepared to hunt. Katherine is probably still alive and will just show up some time in the future. Damon and Elena have slept together (literally!). Stefan is loving life as a dick. Rebekah is heart-broken. Alaric is hopefully hustling as many people as he can at Pictionary. Tyler is still an eager hybrid and, remember, loyal to Klaus.

And I can't even begin to imagine what sort of cliffhanger we'll be left with next Thursday. Meet back here then? I'll bring the goosebumps.

Vampire Diaries is really tanking this season. It's lost its way creatively. Continually reinventing its mythology is getting annoying, and the story has gotten too big and unweildy. The recent flashbacks to the Originals origins was comically bad. The show needs to get back to its roots. Elena, Damon, Stephan, Mystic Falls. Tone it down, and the story practically writes itself.

Oh I forgot to say I've always loved Caroline and Stefan. More recently I enjoy the chemistry between him and Rebekah, if they'd only give them more scenes. But he is not in the lovey dovey mood..he's so happy right now.

@rayhoffman: Dude you put into words.everything I always wanted to say but wasn't able too! Your comment should win some kind of award. As for Lord of Winter, I've seen your comments before and you come across annoyed when anyone starts commenting on delena. Just saying. I don't comment but had to this one time, I feel like ray said what a lot of people want to but aren't eloquent Enough to put into words. Just my opinion

Lord of winter

@Rayhoffman That was a very great the things you said, Although I disagree with the whole Stefan being boring,Just don't get being a good or nice Is such.I like seeing the darkside of Stefan too,But he always been my favorite I just get sick of all the bashing he gets. Also I hope fans well continue like when he mot a ripper no more,But I'm doubtful. But It kinda sound like your say that Stefan and Elena are a bad pairing. I can kinda tell your a Damon fan and that you love Delena,That all lovely. Are you saying that Stefan Is the reason Damon can't find love,Also don't you think Stefan would be heartbroken If Damon and Elena.I'm not a hardcore Stelena fan nor am Delena.I like both pairing,I also can see the appeal of Damon and Elena.I just want to fully understand what you mean?,I really like your comment you weren't dissing nobody and It was all love. Also If Delena does happens,Who would you like to Stefan with or would rather be a loner?

Vampire diaries back to a greay show, glad that we had No Uninvited Ghost trying to kill the living! The Whole Klaus, Elijah, Rebeckia, Ester, Michael, and Anna past story is Great, but it is taking away too much from the Major Characters that Vampire Diaries is Centered on! I feel Kevin and Julie have there purpose as I heard CW may be doing a Spinoff next fall of VD! Thursday's show was Anazing, just too many characters for an hour show~~~so hopefully they are just building this new family of Characters for the possible Spinoff~~~that will be great! The Bad Ripper "No feeling" Stefan is Far more Interesting than the All Sweet Too Boring One of the Past! Paul Wesley is Far too Talented an Actor not to get the Great Scenes he has been given in Season 3, been Paul's fan for over ten years! Good to finally get to see his Real talents as an Actor! Keep up the Fantastic job Paul! Last but Very Important: I am really, really LOVING the Slow Pace of the Relationship between Damon and Elena! This is a Far better Love story in the Making than the Stefan & Elena Love Story~~~~there's was like an Junior High Romance and just not Realistic; Damon and Elena are just meant to be the Perfect Couple! U can see the Fire, The Passion and the Love slowly Building between these too~~~to me, that is Real Realistic Love! Love comes Slowly and Kevin and Julie along with Ian and Nina are Weaving the Most Awesome Love Story Ever Told! Delena was meant to happen, it had to happen! Elena can be Elena with Damon, she could not when she was with Stefan! As for Damon; Damon has just the equal amount of Good and Bad Boy to make him the perfect man for the Woman that Elena is growing into~~~~while Elena cares for Stefan and Always will, deep down in her heart she is Awaking to Realize that She has not Known the Real Meaning of Love until Damon came along! Delena Forever~~~~They are just Amazing! I Love Stefan very much too, now that He is allowed to show us his BAD side, I think we can learn to care more for his Character and even though we enjoy seeing Him be down right Mean and uncaring, I feel that somehow, this bad side of Stefan will finally find a Real Love of his Own~~~sure, He cares very much for Elena, but he Love's his Brother even more! Deep down Stefan still has a Guilt for the past, he feels Responsable for all that happened to Damon, and to some extent it is his Fault, but Not Entirely! I think this time around Stefan will step aside and give Damon first choice for Happiness~~~for even though Stefan Love's to be Bad, he has a Soft side with his Brother and just wants to correct the Wrong of the 1800's! While I Love pretty much all the Characters in Vampire Diaries, Mt Th3ee Favorites will Forever be Damon Stefan and Elena! Without those three Characters there could be No Vampire Diaries! Thanks for a Fantastic Series, the Best Series on Television, and by the way: CW's Hart of Dixie is also Amazing and The Secret Circle has really Gotten Interesting and becoming a Great show, especially since they wrote Nick out and brought in his Far more Interesting Brother Jake! Jake somewhat reminds the Viewer of a Damon in the Making!

I care for the originals, not just Klaus. I like him but I LOVE Elijah and beginning to love Rebekah. I have begun to love Delena also. For me this epi was great bc of the originals and delena.

See, Presence of Klaus=Good episode.
I am loving the originals so much. I love their scenes and I agree, I almost don't care at all about Delena, Alaric, Bonnie, Tyler. I like Damon and Stefan. Bad Stefan is just great.
But Klaus, omg. Joseph Morgan is just great at conveying the emotions of his character. As much as he is terrifying, I also felt so sad in that scene with his father. And I believe he does truly care for Rebecah.

I loved when Michael said to Stephen,“Get Klaus back to Mystic Falls and I will gladly drive a stake through his heart. Fail, and I'll drive it through yours,.

Okay, they definately got back on track with this episode. I almost wanted to hug Rebekah. Almost.

Loved this episode. I just started watching VD, mainly for Delena. I love bad Stefan, he comes more alive than dull Stefan. Big props to the actress that plays Rebekkah, I thought she owned this episode. Then loved my ending Delena scene, but overall this was the best episode I've seen of this show, and clearly shows that VD has dethroned Gossip Girl by a long shot as the top show. Once again, bravo to the actress who plays Rebekkah.
