Parks and Recreation Review: Not So Super Sweet Sixteen

by at . Comments

It was bound to happen sooner or later to Parks, but "Sweet Sixteen" failed almost as much as Leslie's party planning this week.

A Party for Jerry

There just wasn’t a whole lot here to get excited for. Leslie’s campaign has been a fun plot device and a great way to further her dreams and goals, and yes, of course, the two of them are going to come to a head eventually. Leslie being overextended wasn’t the problem, though. The problem was that the stories lacked any real comedy.

It breaks my heart a little bit to type that, but it’s the truth. “Sweet Sixteen” couldn’t even Jerry this one.

Ron’s complete amusement as Leslie was going absolutely crazy trying to handle all of her tasks was the peak of the half hour. As was his talk to her at the end. I love Leslie and Ron time. Watching Ron tease her and be serious (no half-assing, only whole-assing) with her is always great.

The side stories were lacking this week, however. Ann and Tom continue to push the boundaries of my patience, from both sides. Of all of the things for the two of them to do together, why does it always end up with Ann eventually caving in to some aspect of Tom’s craziness after she cuts him off at the knees for doing almost identically stupid things prior? Why is there a rehash of the same thing every week? At least they agreed that their arguments were stupid.

Amazingly, Chris and Andy were the only plot thread that was enjoyable. Chris’ enthusiasm is the perfect companion to a three-legged dog and a foil to Andy’s personality. Only Chris would feel the need to groom, train and exercise Champion into the best dog he could be over the course of one night.

The dog whistle behind Andy’s back was great, too.The small moments of dry humor from Chris work best for me, especially when there's some sweetness behind his actions.

Other thoughts:

  • I nearly forgot about Jerry, but let’s be honest, I'm not alone. Even his wife ignores him on this birthday. Poor guy.
  • Now we know if Leslie wins the election it will only be a part-time job. Which means she won’t have to make a choice between politics and Parks.
  • A total lack of Ben tonight.
  • Lollipopping.

You have an impressive list of books. I was wnnedriog who publishes your books and if you have any suggestions for publishing trail guides.KevinThe Trailmaster responds: Thanks Kevin. Yeah, if you keep on the trail long enough, you end up with a long list of books about hiking! My books have been published by California publishers (Capra Press and Wilderness Press) and by big New York publishers (HarperCollins and Henry Holt). I also publish books through my own company, Olympus Press, a division of The Trailmaster.Suggestions for creating a trail guide: Get to know one area really well the hikes, the nature, the history, and the public lands manager. Learn the basics about publishing so that as an author you can effectively negotiate with a publisher. And watch out for scam artists online who charge way too much to design and print your book. Other than that, go for it!

I agree... The show is slipping a bit. Not enough interesting subplots, and the tom Ann thing is just dumb. It's becoming like The Office where all the characters are too entangled into each others lives for a bunch of coworkers.

Everyone appears to be forgetting that Ann seems to go for immature, goofy guys. Remember, she was LIVING with Andy before he was the super sweet guy he is now. I guess she just likes to be the mom in her relationships. Everyone just calm down! Haha okay, I just had to get that out there.

Childish gambino

I completely agree with the Ann-tom relationship. It was kinda cute/cool to see them together on valentines day, but now they are just flat out annoying. I was about to hop in that bottle April just to get through the episode. If they do stay together (which i sincerely hope they dont) their relationship should never be featured as prominently as it was last night.
Other than that i thought it was a pretty average episode. Though i did miss Ben, he easily became one of my favorite characters

Also just need to point out that your the only one who seems to have a problem with Rob Lowe's character, he is comedy gold and he should be used more not less, he was part of the reason the show went from good in season 2 to every episode of season 3 being amazing.
