Mad Men Season 5 Premiere Shatters Series High Ratings

Apparently 17 months off the air can sometimes be a good thing.

The Mad Men season 5 premiere drew 3.5 million viewers last night, a 21 percent increase over the season four opener and easily the most-watched episode in the history of this AMC drama.

"Mad Men set the bar high and we are incredibly proud that it continues to engage audiences looking for unexpected, unconventional and uncompromising television,” said AMC President Charlie Collier. "For each of the five Mad Men seasons Matthew Weiner and his team have crafted a beautifully told story and each season a larger audience has responded; a rare accomplishment. We couldn’t be more proud of this program, the brilliant writers, cast and crew, and the entire team on each side of the camera."

The show moves ahead with a new episode next Sunday night. Check out the official preview now for "Tea Leaves."

Incredible... Wow... I've missed this show so much! Incredible! Oh, and the scooby do song? I loved that scene, watched it three times. Beautiful!

I loved the earlier seasons and enjoyed being completely focused on the show. Last night Ikept trying to find excuses for the show (and my boredom): "give it a few minutes".... in the end they just didn't deliver.

I had never seen Mad Men "new" before - I had become hooked on it with my sister on DVDs and we were waiting for this. I thought it was right on target and just resumed where it left off with a slightly different feeling.

The whole thing with Don and his new wife showed there was trouble in paradise and her "Scooby doo" song annoyed the crap out of all of us watching. But it was funny when Roger asked his wife why she didn't sing like that and without missing a beat asked why he doesn't look like that.

Anyway, I look forward to the upcoming shows and hope they don't decided to take another long hiatus!
