Allow me to clear up one thing. The initial press release said he would miss one full episode and they were currently filming Episode 20. However, it was later tweeted that two episodes would be effected as they re-wrote part of Episode 20 to allow him to depart during it.
So this was Episode 20 where we only saw a little of him (the footage from Japan was not stock). Episode 21 on 4/30 will be the full episode he misses, and he has been confirmed back for Episode 22 on 5/7.
We all on the same page now? I think we can all agree that we are looking forward to his return very soon!

Ratings are out for last night. H50 came in #1 at 10 pm time slot. 10.2 million viewers without the dvr count. Usually dvr count it around 3 mill. So good numbers for this episode.

@kim..yes I felt that way last night in that particular episode but like I said I usually do like him. Not going to argue about it. And I am pretty sure scott does not read forums so I am not worried about his feelings.

@Lena
I am confused to how they lied. He was in last nights episode...maybe stock footage maybe not...don't work for the show so I can't be sure. That means he is missing episode 21. The NCIS-La is not a Hawaii 5-O ep, it is a show that he was supposed to GUEST star on so thats not a missed 5-O ep. It has already been stated he will be in the final 2 eps, 22 and 23. So unless there is 24 eps he will have only missed 1 5-O ep.

Last nights episode confirmed for me that I cannot watch without Steve. He is the driving force in this show. Without Alex the show was flat, lacking in energy with lacklustre performances from everyone except Kamekona. Kono's role was practically non existant, Chin seemed to be phoning in his lines and Danny was his usual annoying condesending self.
I have to shake my head and wonder why Steve puts up with him. What does he do except mock everyone and even make Steve seem annoying at times. The show didn't seem to have any emotion and therefore I couldn't really relate to Max's story at all.
I don't want Alex to come back before he's ready but when he does I hope he's back to his healthy self and can inject some life back into this show.

The bottom line for me for H5O is that without Alex, it isn't watchable. Not that Scott Caan isn't a wonderful actor, he is, and he's really grown on me as Danno, and Daniel Dae Kim is just sublime and grand in everything he's acted in, but I find the gal who plays Kono unwatchable, boring, and the guy who plays the ME is pretty wooden and unwatchable as well...he really can't act his way out of a paper bag, so I can't understand why he has been cast at all. He doesn't show any emotion, even when he's talking about his mother being murdered, and when the killer says that they're "So much alike" again he hardly reacts at all, just that same vacuous facial expression. He doesn't even change expression when he kills the guy with a piece of glass. Hurry back Alex, your talent carries this show.
Kim

@amazingalex Well, on the second page you said, "Steve makes danno tolerable. Without steve he just comes off as unfeeling and boring. He needs his other half for sure."
It just kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Tolerable? Unfeeling & boring? That's harsh, in my opinion. I just think it's offensive to Scott that you pretty much think Alex is needed for Danny to be "tolerable."
But anyway, don't want to argue at all.

Kim, thanks for posting what I was thinking! I was also shocked by how many negative comments there were about Danny.
Five-0 doesn't investigate missing shrimp trucks. The local PD would do that and they wouldn't be happy if Five-0 tried to step in on a case that should be theirs. Plus, when Kamekono showed up, Danny had just read the letter from Steve and had that on his mind.
Danny is often stated to be the one with more compassion when compared to Steve, who is usually characterized as the tough military guy who doesn't talk about his feelings. Danny's usually the one to handle the upset victims and their families. And as Steve's partner, he would be the one to be second in command. Chin, though I love him too, is ranked as Lt, but by the HPD, which has nothing to do with the Five-0 task force.
I missed Steve this week too, but Danny did a great job with the case, and with Steve on his mind, too.

I personally dont hate danny. I usually like him but last night some things he did bothered me. But I certainly would not use the word hate, at least not for me. I love the mcdanno relationship and he usually makes me laugh. I just thought he was not at his best last night but it was only one episode. But that is just my feelings on it.
I dont see anything that anyone has said that should be an insult to Scott. He is a good actor and portrays danno the way he is written. He can only say what they want him to say. If he came off in some ways as unsympathetic last night that is how it was written. It has nothing to do with scott as a person.
Kim
April 10th, 2012 4:33 PM
The amount of Danny-hate I've read in the comments is really disappointing. I'm really surprised. I don't think that Danny necessarily "needs" Steve or vice versa, they are their own person too, as much as watching them interact is great.
I don't think that Danny acted cold towards Kamekona at all. I mean, the guy had just found out that his partner went off on his own, dead set on his mission. Give him a little slack. And he was very sympathetic and kind towards the victim's mother.
I like both Danny & Steve equally. I love Danny's sarcasm and wit, which is what seems to turn some people off. And personally, I see it as somewhat offensive to Scott Caan as well when I read what people say about how boring Danny is without Steve.
I really enjoyed this episode. Yes, I did miss Steve, but I think that the writers and crew made the best out of a tough situation, and succeeded.
Anyway, just my two cents.

@lena..Yeah it has to be fryer. They are not gonna cast a wife for him unless it is to be in a funeral scene. He is not a crucial part of the show and we barely ever see chin's wife who is a crucial character. Yup fryer is gonna go bye bye, which i am personally fine with. I think he stayed too long already. Not to sound like a broken record but thank goodness alex is back, he is H50.
@martinelli..I do think joe will come back with steve. Terry o quinn has not started his new show yet so what better time for him to return then this season finale. I hope so anyway cause I love joe. I dont know about wo fat, hopefully steve will be escorting him back in handcuffs.

Lena, nobody "lied" about how long Alex would be out of filming. What I read was that he would miss "at least one episode" which left room for there to be more if it became necessary. It would have been impossible to know for sure how much time he'd need so I see no reason to freak out and say the producers lied to us.
Great review as always, Jim, but one teensy nitpick. Max didn't act "bazaar" as I don't recall him ever going shopping. I think you meant he was "bizarre" in the early eps.

Still a good show but the bromance between Danny & Steve is what makes great. Alex has such good chemistry with the rest of the cast, Scott Caan especially. If he ever leaves the show will not be the same. Kudos to Masi Okay for knocking it outta the park tho.

I was thinking: if Steve is in Japan, looking for Joe and we know that Joe is going to show up in the season finale, what do you think will happen? Is Steve bringing back Joe and Wo Fat with him?
@amazingalex..... Just saw the spoiler to and I am with you it will be Fryer who is gonna die what else could be the reason she shows up in the finale!
Yeah they used old footage but why lying to us as it was of Alex shoot this scene for 2.20 don't like that at all they have to know by now the fans aren't stupid and would notice this they have said in the media Alex would miss one episode lying again because the are two episode he will miss on H5O + the NCIS LA a total of 3 episodes I would have totally understand if Alex have missed 2 or 5 episodes his health comes first but don't lie to your fans! Not Cool!!

It was just spoiled that we will meet chief fryers wife in episode 2.23. Doesnt that pretty much tell us he will be the one to die. It would make sense she would be showing up for the funeral. Why else would they cast his wife, he is not an important character to the show so we really dont need to know his family. My vote is fryer to die.
