Hawaii Five-O Review: Taking Out the Trash

by at . Comments

"Ha'alele:" Abandoned

Allow me to start with the elephant in the room. This episode is the first of two episodes that will be affected by Alex O’Loughlin’s absence. That said, I have to give a nod to the writers and production staff for doing such a great job of adjusting this episode to deal with the missing McGarrett. I'm sure I speak for a lot of use when I say that I hope O'Loughlin's time off has helped him and I look forward to his return.

With that out of the way, let’s talk about the amount of information we got on Max this week! What a revealing episode for him. When Masi Oka first joined the cast as Max Bergman back in Season One, I really didn't like the character at all. He was too quirky, the OCD and eccentricities really turned me off the character.

Chin at Work

What a long way we've come since then. Max has softened and they toned down his bazaar nature into more a “geeky” nature (his license plate is Warp 9 after all).

And after nearly two seasons on the show, we finally learned the answer to the question I asked when he started - why he is Asian but have the last name "Bergman." The answer was simple: he was adopted.

But then again, the answer wasn’t really simple was it? Not when his mother was a victim of the “Trash Man”. Max has been obsessed with the case ever since.

I really enjoyed the quid pro quo of Max asking Five-O to open the case as payment for the case he reopened for them. It showed depth and character that I would not have expected in 2010.

Speaking of quid pro quo – Kamekona’s missing shrimp truck seemed a bit tacked on. While it did offer some mild comedic relief, Danny’s initial rudeness to Kamekona had my wife commenting on what an ass he is.

How many times has Kamekona stepped up for Five-O? Danny should have at least picked up the phone and gotten some officers dedicated to the case for the man!

Thankfully Danny eased up a bit on the jackass-ery and recruited Chin Ho and Kono to help him find Kamekona’s truck, making everything right with him and team again. Except for Max, who went to pick Richard Branch (the man accused of being the serial killer) from jail.

I understood Max’s need to help Richard when he knew he was not the killer. Just as I’m sure that killing the real killer went a long way to making it feel like there was justice (or revenge) for his biological mother's death.

Losing a parent is hard, I can't imagine it would be easier on Max just because he didn't know his biological mother, just less direct emotions. I hope that helping Richard gave Max some closure on his mother's death.

Ironically, for having started as a character I disliked, Max truly redeemed himself this week. He is even featured in a few of the most memorable Hawaii Five-O quotes from the episode!

What did you think of Danny’s first turn as lead dog? Did you miss McGarrett the character or Alex the actor? Can you make it through one more episode without him? Comment below!

@Martinelli.....True, I've seen other pictures where he looks too serious while the others were smiling. But in the crossover BTS pictures, he was smiling and laughing. At least he is always there. I loved the pictures of him and Alex in 2.19 waiting to go up the steps to the restaurant with his hand on Alex's shoulder and then Alex did the same. You can tell they respect each other and are probably friends. That's why the carguments and bromance come off so well.

@Zia - they look happy except Scott. He has the same, not smiling face almost all the time. I don't know why he does that but just look at the interviews. Alex, Grace and Daniel are always smiling, laughing, having fun, they always look happy when talking about their job on H50. Scott never does that.

After Mondays episode unfortunately I could easily see the show lasting without Kono or Chin because they have been given so little to do, eventhough I love both actors. I also think it could last without Danny as he doesn't really do anything except criticise Steve and mock the culture and its customs." Same complaint. Unfortunately for you Danny, Chin, and Kono are not going anywhere, so I guess you will be at some point. You don't like him, OK. As I recall Scott Caan was nominated for a people's choice award for his portrayal of Danny, so I'm guessing there are a few people who like him. Some do and some don't, let it go.

Daniel Dae Kim tweeted a BTS photo and called it "Ohana". Its of Scott, Grace, Alex, and Daniel. Its in front of a helicopter at night where they were filming. Aside from the light reflection off their eyes, it's a great picture, they look like they are happy to be back together. We got all 4 of our team back together. Can't wait for the remaining episodes to begin.

cont... Steve for me is the driving force behind the show. He's great chemistry with everyone so he could adapt to any team imo, but it seems the others couldn't adapt without Steve/Alex. I really hope they give us more Kono/Chin/Steve interaction and give both of these characters a more fleshed out role.

"No one can ever replace Steve/Alex in this show. I think 95% of the people agree with that. With that said, the Danny bashing is unnecessary. Yes you are entitled to your opinion, but at least come up with something new. Danny has rubbed off on Steve, and Steve has rubbed off on Danny over the last 40 plus episodes. The show would fall with any extended absence of McGarrett, but could you see it last long without a Danny, Chin, or Kono?" What do you mean by come up with something new!!

I am so pleased to see so many fans have missed Alex proves once again how important he is for H5O :) Saw the other pic of him with a fan today so good to see him smiling again. I am gonna watch the cross-over but men I can't wait for the last two episodes of the season Alex against Wo-Fat again will be EPIC!!!!!!!!!

Looking forward to having Alex back. The show isn't the same without him. I used to think the core 4 made the show but after the last episode I think its Alex. None of them could carry the show, I was so disappointed. I look forward to some excitement again and WoFat and the Yakuza should be able to supply that. Just seen the photos of Alex. Yay!! he looks great. Welcome back Alex.

It's going to be a fun finish to the season. I'm so glad they scheduled so my finals would end the week before ep21, nice of them to consider me LOL. Still not sure if Adam is good or bad, guess we will find out soon. they said Yakuza was out kill them, but they mention Adam by name. I hope he has switched sides, that maybe to much to hope for, but I'll hold out some hope.

Hawaii Five-0 Season 2 Episode 20 Quotes

Danny: Sit down, don't stand up again.
Cal: Look I was working last night, you can check with my manager.
Danny: Ok, I'm going to check with your manager and if I find out you're lying to me, I'm going to come back here and put you in a mayonnaise jar.

Chin Ho: Hey, where's McGarrett?
Danny: He left a "Dear Danny" note on my desk this morning, he's off looking for Shelburn again.
