Hawaii Five-O Review: Taking Out the Trash

at . Comments

"Ha'alele:" Abandoned

Allow me to start with the elephant in the room. This episode is the first of two episodes that will be affected by Alex O’Loughlin’s absence. That said, I have to give a nod to the writers and production staff for doing such a great job of adjusting this episode to deal with the missing McGarrett. I'm sure I speak for a lot of use when I say that I hope O'Loughlin's time off has helped him and I look forward to his return.

With that out of the way, let’s talk about the amount of information we got on Max this week! What a revealing episode for him. When Masi Oka first joined the cast as Max Bergman back in Season One, I really didn't like the character at all. He was too quirky, the OCD and eccentricities really turned me off the character.

Chin at Work

What a long way we've come since then. Max has softened and they toned down his bazaar nature into more a “geeky” nature (his license plate is Warp 9 after all).

And after nearly two seasons on the show, we finally learned the answer to the question I asked when he started - why he is Asian but have the last name "Bergman." The answer was simple: he was adopted.

But then again, the answer wasn’t really simple was it? Not when his mother was a victim of the “Trash Man”. Max has been obsessed with the case ever since.

I really enjoyed the quid pro quo of Max asking Five-O to open the case as payment for the case he reopened for them. It showed depth and character that I would not have expected in 2010.

Speaking of quid pro quo – Kamekona’s missing shrimp truck seemed a bit tacked on. While it did offer some mild comedic relief, Danny’s initial rudeness to Kamekona had my wife commenting on what an ass he is.

How many times has Kamekona stepped up for Five-O? Danny should have at least picked up the phone and gotten some officers dedicated to the case for the man!

Thankfully Danny eased up a bit on the jackass-ery and recruited Chin Ho and Kono to help him find Kamekona’s truck, making everything right with him and team again. Except for Max, who went to pick Richard Branch (the man accused of being the serial killer) from jail.

I understood Max’s need to help Richard when he knew he was not the killer. Just as I’m sure that killing the real killer went a long way to making it feel like there was justice (or revenge) for his biological mother's death.

Losing a parent is hard, I can't imagine it would be easier on Max just because he didn't know his biological mother, just less direct emotions. I hope that helping Richard gave Max some closure on his mother's death.

Ironically, for having started as a character I disliked, Max truly redeemed himself this week. He is even featured in a few of the most memorable Hawaii Five-O quotes from the episode!

What did you think of Danny’s first turn as lead dog? Did you miss McGarrett the character or Alex the actor? Can you make it through one more episode without him? Comment below!

What if it's not Kono and Malia, but Chin and Malia who are kidnapped and Kono has to decide which one to save.

It's not the core 4. They are safe. They may make it seem as though one is killed for the finale, but no way are they going to kill the show by getting rid of any of the original 4. This year and last year there were always rumors about Grace Park not wanting to be away from her husband, that they wanted to start a family, etc. Nothing is impossible, but there is a miniscule chance that is going to happen. I was disappointed that Catherine was not in the finale, but she will be there for season 3. I assume that the kidnapping has to do with Chin, Malia, and Kono. As Jschoi said, Chin may have to save Malia because she is a civilian and Kono is the cop. Although the earlier statement was that they would not be there for each other. I can't imagine that Steve and Danny not being there if Kono is kidnapped. There are just so many possibilities. The last 3 episodes should be awesome.

@lena..did you see the part where it says "shootings, explosions, and kidnappings"...I wonder if that is what that actor that plays the bad guy meant when he tweeted that H50 is no more. I wonder if the H50 headquarters is targeted?

@lena..yeah that is the two I think are killed off as well. And your right about catherine, at least we know she is signed on for next season whether she is in the finale or not. I saw that hashtag..I wonder what makes people worried that kono would be killed off...I just dont see it. She is the only female team member and is chins cousin. Just seems to me lenkov is working overtime to make sure we all return for season 3. The ratings for 2.1 were lower then 1.24 so maybe he is worried some wont come back. I personally dont know how any fan would watch the season 1 finale and not come back for the season 2 premiere! I mean it was a major cliffhanger not to mention it rocked!! :) Plus as an AOL fan it was the hottest he has ever looked...ha ha! loved the scruff!:) There is a great vid out that is a recap of season 2, it is really good!

After reading the press release a few times more are we getting to see 3 people get killed of because it's said [A SHOOTER WHO GUNS DOWN TWO OF THEIR OWN] Maybe Fryer and Joe. and then this part. [WHILE ANOTHER TEAM MEMBER IS FORCED TO CHOOSE WHICH OF THEIR KIDNAPPED LOVED ONES WILL LIVE] Think this will go for Chin if it's Malia and Kono who are get kidnapped Chin will choose which one will survive?? I am so confused maybe I read more in to it then it is.

@amazingalex...The press release said " who guns down two of their own"
My guess was always Fryer or Sgt. Duke Lukela now it can be both of them who can be killed off I am not so worried about the core 4 as I am for Malia I always have said it was weird we got a marriage in the middle of the season. Many posters on twitter are scared it will be Kono because of the hashtag #H50OhNoKono in the press release! Peter did it again he scares us all for the finale. As for Catherine don't think they forgot her she won't appear in the season finale I can live with it now I know she comes back in season 3.
It will be a roller coaster ride for sure!

@lena..it is possible catherine is not in the finale. Maybe it was just rumored she was on set. She is not in any BTS pics from what I have seen. But it is also possible they just forgot to list her. Another mystery we cannot solve till the finale...Grrrr!!

@jschoi..I dont know. I have not heard anything about that which I think we would have by now. Terry o quinn is getting his own show, so I would think we would hear if anyone else was. I personally dont think any of the four are leaving. It is still early in the shows success, season 3 is considered still early on, and they all seem to really love being a part of H50. I suppose contracts can be broken but I think when you have a winning formula you leave it alone. I am just speaking my opinion but I cannot see them getting rid of DDK or GP!! The four of them are important to the show as a team. But crazier things have happened. I am still voting that the four are safe. But i do think one of them will be in jeapordy and we wont truly know till september. @lena...it is gonna be a tough finale for us isnt it?? Yikes!! I am not ready for this. :(

@amazingalex....I know very little about business and contracts, but are these contracts with the network or the show? If they are with the network, there are several CBS cop shows that haven't been renewed and wouldn't SC, GP, or DDk, particularly SC, be leading candidates for a lead role in a new show. Haven't seen anything to indicate that, but is it possible.

@amazingalex... I don't know I don't like the sound of it I agree this will be worse then last season finale they can't leave's us while some love ones are kidnapped or maybe dead I won't survive the summer if this happens. I wonder why Michelle/Catherine isn't listed in the recurring or guestlist thought someone tweeted seen her ready for shooting her scene's. Have a feeling I will be in total shock after watching the finale!

Hawaii Five-0 Season 2 Episode 20 Quotes

Danny: Sit down, don't stand up again.
Cal: Look I was working last night, you can check with my manager.
Danny: Ok, I'm going to check with your manager and if I find out you're lying to me, I'm going to come back here and put you in a mayonnaise jar.

Chin Ho: Hey, where's McGarrett?
Danny: He left a "Dear Danny" note on my desk this morning, he's off looking for Shelburn again.
