Hawaii Five-O Review: Taking Out the Trash

at . Comments

"Ha'alele:" Abandoned

Allow me to start with the elephant in the room. This episode is the first of two episodes that will be affected by Alex O’Loughlin’s absence. That said, I have to give a nod to the writers and production staff for doing such a great job of adjusting this episode to deal with the missing McGarrett. I'm sure I speak for a lot of use when I say that I hope O'Loughlin's time off has helped him and I look forward to his return.

With that out of the way, let’s talk about the amount of information we got on Max this week! What a revealing episode for him. When Masi Oka first joined the cast as Max Bergman back in Season One, I really didn't like the character at all. He was too quirky, the OCD and eccentricities really turned me off the character.

Chin at Work

What a long way we've come since then. Max has softened and they toned down his bazaar nature into more a “geeky” nature (his license plate is Warp 9 after all).

And after nearly two seasons on the show, we finally learned the answer to the question I asked when he started - why he is Asian but have the last name "Bergman." The answer was simple: he was adopted.

But then again, the answer wasn’t really simple was it? Not when his mother was a victim of the “Trash Man”. Max has been obsessed with the case ever since.

I really enjoyed the quid pro quo of Max asking Five-O to open the case as payment for the case he reopened for them. It showed depth and character that I would not have expected in 2010.

Speaking of quid pro quo – Kamekona’s missing shrimp truck seemed a bit tacked on. While it did offer some mild comedic relief, Danny’s initial rudeness to Kamekona had my wife commenting on what an ass he is.

How many times has Kamekona stepped up for Five-O? Danny should have at least picked up the phone and gotten some officers dedicated to the case for the man!

Thankfully Danny eased up a bit on the jackass-ery and recruited Chin Ho and Kono to help him find Kamekona’s truck, making everything right with him and team again. Except for Max, who went to pick Richard Branch (the man accused of being the serial killer) from jail.

I understood Max’s need to help Richard when he knew he was not the killer. Just as I’m sure that killing the real killer went a long way to making it feel like there was justice (or revenge) for his biological mother's death.

Losing a parent is hard, I can't imagine it would be easier on Max just because he didn't know his biological mother, just less direct emotions. I hope that helping Richard gave Max some closure on his mother's death.

Ironically, for having started as a character I disliked, Max truly redeemed himself this week. He is even featured in a few of the most memorable Hawaii Five-O quotes from the episode!

What did you think of Danny’s first turn as lead dog? Did you miss McGarrett the character or Alex the actor? Can you make it through one more episode without him? Comment below!

Is Catherine in the finale? That's great, thanks for letting us know Kelly.

Catherine's gonna be in the finale? That's news to me haha. I'm rooting for Kono/Adam, I really hope Kono gets lots of screen time. If this crossover is a hit, I think they should do one next season with Kono and Steve cos they missed out this time

I love getting these BTS photos. There are some awesome ones out now of episode 2.23. I'm not that excited about the NCIS crossovers as I don't watch that show and will miss Steve, but I think the ratings will be fine. Fans are just so happy to see the last 3 remaining episodes. I'm beginning to think that it could be Fryer who gets killed in episode 2.23. I really hope it's not Joe as it would be terrible for Steve to loose his surrogate father so soon after loosing his real Dad. Great news about Catherine being in the final.

One more week then we start with the last 3 episodes. CBS has been promoting the crossover on most of their shows, so hopefully that will help with the ratings. Excited to see what they have in store for us. I'm hoping the BTS photos keep coming, some great ones out there. PLenkov tweeted that they had their wrap up party last night, so I guess this is the last few days of filming until July.

Tamara, I think "ignore her" is a good idea. She does not get that you have a right to your opinion, which I read and does not mention her at all, but she has to come after you because its an opposite opinion, and then if you respond, she attacks again, claiming you are in the wrong. Too bad, this site has some real fans, but like other sites there are always some who have to bring everyone else down. I'm sure there will be a response for this also, because she always has to have the last word.

"How about letting other people express their opinions without waging a war". Maybe you could take your own advise Tamara. My opinion is MY opinion. Unlike you I don't claim to speak for everyone. Please feel free to ignore me. I've just seen a few more pics of Steve and WoFat and I've noticed they are handcuffed together. I can't wait to see the showdown between them. I know WoFat is a martial arts expert but it looks like Steve is a good match for him with his SEAL moves.

Kelly (cont.) How about letting other people express their opinions without waging a war. There are things that I don't like, but the overall show is great. If there are so many things to dislike about one show, I probably would not watch. Please don't address me again, I will ignore you.

Kelly.....I disagree, I think that Kono and Chin have both had more time since the first of the year, and even more since Lori has left. We've seen Chin break down a door instead of Steve, Kono and Chin were there with Max, Kono gets to be the sniper, Chin gets caught, but kicks some butt at the Russian embassy, etc. There are more. I'm not saying that they have been "featured" as you say. I want more of their background, but we see them more since the first half of the year. Danny has had his time, Chin will be in the crossover, and the producer said that Kono will be getting a story (someone from her past). No one is disputing that Steve being gone has not made it feel that something is missing. Yes, he is the leader, and most important character. However, the other 3, (including Danny who you dislike) are an important part of this team. Everyone says core 4, not core 3.

Here's a great BTS pic of all 4 with a dog. (no not Grace's)
http://www.facebook.com/photo.... DDK tweeted it was the last Saturday for filming. Sad for us, but happy for them, they can all relax and do whatever else they want to until they have to come back in July to start season 3.

@Zia.....We should certainly do so especially when this summer photos and spoilers will be released.4 long months without my fav show how will I survive:(( But first the last 3 episodes in a row from this season will be intense I am very excited for it !!!

Hawaii Five-0 Season 2 Episode 20 Quotes

Danny: Sit down, don't stand up again.
Cal: Look I was working last night, you can check with my manager.
Danny: Ok, I'm going to check with your manager and if I find out you're lying to me, I'm going to come back here and put you in a mayonnaise jar.

Chin Ho: Hey, where's McGarrett?
Danny: He left a "Dear Danny" note on my desk this morning, he's off looking for Shelburn again.
