The Secret Circle Review: Did You See The Forest?

by at . Comments

Before the opening credits of "Traitor," I was already well satisfied with this episode of The Secret Circle. It only went up from there; little did I know how much!

Hey sister!
Cassie's character growth since John Blackwell arrived has been amazing. I was so proud of her to reach out to Diana about everything she was going through when it was Cassie who was hurting so much by Jane's passing. Kids on television are far superior to what I was able to pull off as a teen, because Diana had no problem asking Charles about her heritage.

Stunned Witches

Diana was sure that she broke her father's heart and that he had no idea, but it didn't look to me like he even flinched at her reveal. I don't know what was more more shocking, that he might have known all along and protected John Blackwell's daughter for 16 years or that it was so difficult to to read his reaction in the first place.

When he confronted John at the bar, I honestly couldn't tell if learning about Diana was new or old news. I did enjoy how he towered over John. His height took a bit of the intimidation out of Blackwell.

Another fun point was when Cassie was using her black magic and the only way to stop her was for Diana to yell stop. Cheesy, yes, but with the deafening effect they were using, it was a nice touch. These sisters could be a lot of fun.

Sexaaay...
All you need for a good sex scene is my girl Faye. My personal opinion is that Jake is boring, but put a lingerie clad, practically meowing Faye in front of him and all of a sudden we have an exciting scene. Is there anything Phoebe Tonkin can do to ruin a scene? I'd like to see her try, just for giggles. As always, she kept The Secret Circle quotes section alive. Girl crush!

Did that elixir work at all?
When Cassie kissed Adam, he not only didn't seem surprised, he seemed relieved. He also seemed to be hiding something. Later he talked about the kiss with Melissa and the same look appeared on his face. He never admitted that he had any remaining feelings or that the elixir didn't work, but something was going on in his head. Are you with me, readers? More importantly, do you want there to be remnants of love between them? After all the crap in the beginning, I admit I do. Don't hurt me!

Parents being parents? Say it ain't so!
Pathetic that it took their kids swarming to John Blackwell to notice that their own children had some damned powerful magic, but maybe there's a reason Charles and Dawn lost their magic in the first place. They were so busy thinking about themselves and trying to get their own magic back they didn't even notice how powerful their spawn had become. While Charles took the news of Diana being John's daughter in a somewhat coma-like state, he did make the move to get her the hell out of Chance Harbor.

That's when Dawn told him Faye was under Blackwell's thumb, as well. Geez, Dawn, where have you been? Faye may be great at playing the good daughter when she needs to, but it was sort of embarrassing for them to have the come to Jesus moment like they did, don't you think? Did they finally wake up to caring about their kids?

The big finish...
I LOVE when I can get so immersed into what is happening on screen that I miss the forest for the trees. When the circle arrived at the amusement park and found all the witch hunters dead and one lone hunter, not only responsible for their deaths but running free and teasing the members of the circle, I should have known what was happening.

But I didn't.

Readers have kept the rumor mill alive and patiently waited week after week for Nick to return. Tonight their wish came true. Jake's little brother returned! Did the title refer to him? Could Nick really be called a traitor? After all, the ride (going much slower than a similar one I have ridden in real life, most likely to keep the dead in their seats) was full of murdered witch hunters. If a witch murdered hunters, how would he be a traitor? I'd consider him a helper and a hero for the cause.

Nick did not look right, however. Was there something weird with his eyes or was I just wanting more drama to build upon as we count down to The Secret Circle finale?

More secrets were uncovered and even more cloaked this week.

Diana sure was taking her parentage reveal casually, wasn't she? Did the elixir work on Adam? What will screen time shared with Jake and Nick be like? Will Melissa finally have a chance at love? What are the chances that Charles and Dawn can out-magic Blackwell and the circle? We're winding down here and it's your guess as to what can happen.

Be sure to vote in the Save Which CW Show poll and vote for The Secret Circle! Meanwhile, share your thought about this episode and what's to come in the comments! I can't wait to hear your theories!!

Am I the only one who thinks Melissa and Adam need to hook up? I think its refreshing to see Adam with someone other than Diana or Cassie for a change. I'd like to see him interact more with Melissa and even Faye. Same goes for Jake..he needs to start interacting more with the other characters on the show besides Cassie (and half naked scenes with Faye don't count). That being said, I am super excited for the return of Nick. I hope his character comes back permanently on the show...this show could definitely use more male characters!

@strawberry fields, agreed. I would have like to see Cassie's reaction to her grandmother being found dead as well...

OH! and BTW!!! What the HECK were John and Dawn talking about when he said "we tried, it just wasn't meant to be" and she responds "I feel like you never really forgave me for that." Whaaaat?! Does that mean she knew what he was doing and tried to get pregnant with his child, but couldn't? Has she been in on this all along? The season finale owes us some major answers...

My point about Diana got cut off:
I do love that she's the one that can get Cassie to stop going overboard (they are definitely a good balance of each other and that was a great scene), but I also think Cassie was right. Diana was completely fine with Cassie and her dark magic...right up until she thought that could be her. Plus, I cant WAIT for her to find out that her FATHER has been murdering people left and right....ESPECIALLY Cassie's family. Killing Cassie's mom and her grandmother...not to mention drowning Nick!! There's going to be some serious sibling issues when all of that information comes out.

sleeping with sisters....???). Despite all of that, I have to say I'm kind of rooting for them to be together now. I hope they find out that the curse is bogus...I really want to see what this whole fate in the stars is all about and whats the big deal about them being together. Blackwell went through a fair amount of trouble to stop them....whyyyy?

Dawn has to be one of the most frustrating and yet interesting characters of this show! John Blackwell may have his moments where he's good with the kids, but I think overall he is up to no good, but Dawn? I can never tell what her deal is?! Is she out for herself, does she actually care about Faye, is she good, is she bad? What is her deal?! Yes, she told Charles about what Blackwell was doing, but she convinced him to stay and keep Diana in Chance Harbor...isn't that what Blackwell wanted all along? Yes she told Charles that the kids would still be bound by the circle, but with Blackwell in town and the hunters around, wouldn't it really be safer for the kids to go on a vacation? Also...I never really liked Adam and Cassie together. Adam has got to be one of the most annoying characters in this show...not the actors fault, but the writers haven't really given him anything interesting to do other than be the girl in whatever relationship he's in at the time (btw, sleeping with sisters....???). Despite all of that, I have to say I'm kind of rooting for them to be together now. I hope they find out that the curse is bogus...I really want to see what this whole fate in the stars is all about and whats the big deal about them being together. I think that this show has a lot of potential to be amazing even though it seemed like it started without a real direction in mind. I was honestly expecting a lot more from this episode after the previous episode which was amazing! But it was still a good episode overall and the carnival creepiness factor was off the charts. I think Diana was being WAY too judgmental of Cassie throughout the episode with her stoic demeanor. I love Diana, she's definitely my favorite character of this show, but she really didn't have much emotion about the whole situation between herself, Cassie, her father, and Blackwell. Everyone says that she handled the situation beautifully and was very mature....but she's still a teenager in high school! I would expect a least a little bit of tears....maybe some (or a LOT) of anger. I don't think she's wrong at all in what she was saying to Cassie about letting the dark magic take over...and I do love that she's the one that can get Cassie to stop going overboard (they are definitely a good balance of each other and that was a great scene), but I also think Cassie was right. The cast that play the characters don't match up to what the writers had in mind so they adjusted the storyline to fit the cast not the books. Diana is regal she steals the spotlight, Faye is a wise crack which becomes annoying for every single line she utters, no one speaks likes this all the time, less is more, Cassie is questionable but growing, Dianna and Jake bring her to life, Adam takes up space including Cassie's she becomes limited when he's around. What does he truly want outside of Cassie, does he have a goal does he even like the circle and Melissa is under developed, where is her oh so powerful grandmother and of course her parent. They all have one except for Jake and Nick who lost both. Jake I actually like mostly because he acts like someone his age 18, which is caught up in whatever is around him, suspicious yet naively trusting adults, wanting of revenge, family, Cassie and Faye, over emotional essentially a teenager. Anybody who wants to see the Adam and Cassie show just want to see a soap opera with the couple exchanging longing glances all day (don't make me sick) and telling their mutual friends how much they love the other, thank goodness the writers of TVD and TSC are so much better than this. Hey they still have those on ABC why don't you tune in to Grey's Anatomy for that drivel. TSC will make the cut with a few viewers lost (like viewers who wanted Dawson to end up with Casey) who wanted to see a fairy tale ending to gain viewers who actually want to see a series of fantasy, mysticism and erotica play out. Anyone who reads books of this genre knows there is NO happy ending, death, intrigue, mayhem and sex are abundant. Let the writers take you where you didn't expect to go stop looking for the fairy tale and just watch.

The Secret Circle Season 1 Episode 20 Quotes

Jake: Is it true, witch hunters did it?
Faye: That's what Blackwell said.
Jake: We can't just sit here and let them get away with this!
Faye: And we will. But right now there are sad, fragile, old people here. Let's not give them some heart attacks with angry threats.

Diana, you've always treated me like family and I know things are really confusing right now, but if it turns out that you are my sister, I'd be really happy about that.
