Rookie Blue Review: Mommy Who?

at . Comments

Typically, an 11-year old with a gun pointed in your direction would make for a rough enough day.

But this development was merely the beginning for Andy McNally on the latest Rookie Blue... because her mother showed up.

I had to laugh at the start of "Messy Houses" when Andy suddenly remembers that it's her father's birthday and she and Sam make a mad dash to his house in the middle of the night. Most people rectify that situation with a phone call - but not our favorite female officer. Sam's tired eyes and sleep rumpled hair were just adorable. Only a top notch boyfriend hauls his butt out of bed to go say happy birthday to your dad.

Andy's Domestic Disturbance

Then her day went sideways. Claire McNally didn't strike me as the most professional social worker. First, she walked up to a scene where there were cops everywhere with guns drawn and she told Sam she had to get in there. She didn't even tell him she was a social worker. Why would he possibly let her in?

Then she kept referring to Sam as cowboy and snarkily told him not to call her ma'am. Sam was nothing but polite but all he got back from Claire was attitude.

Should Andy have given her mother a second chance? I think Andy needed answers and it did sound as though there was more to the story than she knew.

Was her father protecting her when he wouldn't allow Andy to take her mother's phone calls or was he angry and using access to Andy as a way to get back at his ex? Probably a little of both.

I had no love for Claire McNally in this episode. If she really wanted a relationship with her daughter, nothing would have stopped her from fighting for it, but at some point Claire gave up and walked away. If there's more to that story I hope that we and Andy get to hear it.

Did you ever think Chris would be a player? Obviously he was using some bed hopping therapy to get over Gail. I know he put his heart out there again when he approached her at the end but when he found out about Gail and Nick his response sounded particularly harsh in this Rookie Blue quote

There are plenty of options. You were one of them. Now you're not. | permalink

I suppose he thought he had another shot with her and was shocked to find out about a part of her past and present that he didn't see coming. Still, that line kind of stung.

So are Jerry and Traci perfect for each other or headed towards disaster? It could be a case of two people who have made mistakes in their pasts but learned from them, yet I don't think so. First, Jerry let Traci feel like the bad guy for cheating on her ex, all the while never mentioning that he had done the same.

Then his justification for infidelity bothered me. His wife didn't love him anymore and he didn't love her. Yeah... but I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have been happy to hear her husband was in a motel room with another woman. He also said it wouldn't happen with Traci because he's happy now but all relationships go through tough times. What happens when he's NOT happy?

Somehow I just don't see Traci and Jerry lasting over the long haul.

But there's one couple who looked like they will. I believed Sam when he told Andy…

You won't get rid of me without a fight. | permalink

Something about that adorable little smile on his face and the determined look in his eyes melted my heart. Go team Sandy!

So are you rooting for Traci and Jerry? Should Andy see her mother again? And did you miss Noelle and Frank?

Why is her last name McNally, That was a fauld, and a big one by the screen writer.

I love the Andy and Sam couple.I think it's great that they became a "normal" couple.Back in season 1 Andy was jealous when Sam ran into Monica the department doctor who stitched up Sam's hand. You could tell Andy had feelings for Sam back then.

I'm a big sam fan he has nice eyes! I think Andy and Sam make a cute couple. I think Sam been in love with Andy since season 1. I think Andy was in love with him too.

I looove the Jerry/Traci relationship!!They are my favorite couple now. I used to be all about Sam and Andy, but not so much now that they are finally together, mainly because all the sexual tension is gone. I think Traci and Jerry will be fine; the only reason the directors keep making them fight is because they want more drama in the show...basically it just comes down to the fact that Traci and Jerry are made for each other- even if they break up over something in the future, eventually they'll find their way back together.

I do not see any chemistry between sam and andy, no matter how hard i try. Interms of character, i like sam and andy not so much. she had better chemistry with luke. Also i need more of jerry and traci or at least the other characters because it looks it is the andy/sam show but they are not interesting. sometimes they can be very boring.
For jerry and traci, the writers are trying to add some challenges to them because they already have put them together. but this is couple where each member find himself drawn more to the other: traci could not stay away from jerry, he sold his car to get a more family-oriented car...all my saying is please writers, don't mess up the things. i understand you have to keep them interesting but the line you are trying to put is out of character....
jerry is a cheater? anyone one here is surprised that jerry was a womanizer? come on...

Great review, Christine!
I loved all the Sam and Andy scenes too, though I do agree with some fans who wished for a hug or kiss at the end, Division parking lot or no. Andy had the kind of day that warranted it. I always love Dov/Shaw scenes, and these were probably the best to date. They're both going through such a tough time, I was so glad that case allowed them to get at least a little of it off their chests. I guess it maybe eventually will be a bit of a weird, sad bit of catharsis for them. Jerry and Traci definitely had some interesting scenes together. The day was quite the roller coaster for them. Jerry's explanation rubbed me the wrong way too, for the reasons you mentioned. That's the sort of rationalization cheaters always trot out. His elephant lines were very cute, but I don't find him a very trustworthy long-term romantic partner. I would definitely be seeing major red flags if I were dating him.

I'm sorry part of my comment got cut off here is the rest. She was their number-one priority would have gone long way. Maybe things would have not turned out like they did.

The scenes between Sam and Andy were so sweet, especially the ending. It really demonstrated they're commitment to each other and wanting to make this relationship work. As for Claire when she first walked up to the scene should have at least identified herself as a social worker she showed no I.D not, even so, much as a business card. Why would Sam allow her in? And as far as her scenes with Andy if she called every Sunday as she said and Tommy wouldn't allow her to talk to Andy, why didn't she tell Tommy she was getting a lawyer and going after if not joint custody, then visitation rights, I find it very hard to believe a judge wouldn't have granted her that? And Tommy's explanation to Andy about not allowing Claire to speak to her, I do not really agree with about Andy being confused, and Andy needing some stability. I think allowing her to cultivate a relationship with her mother and letting Andy know that know matter what happened between her parents, she was their number-one priority would have gone long way. Maybe things would have not turned out like they did.

i loved the sam and andy scenes. so adorableeee

it was a great show. Sam was adorable and he is so in love with Andy...she could really break his heart. Can't wait for more to come. Sam and Andy are wonderful characters, but Ben Bass and Missy Peregrine are the amazing actors that have made watching these two characters an event every week. I just love seeing them together.
