Rookie Blue Review: Mommy Who?

by at . Comments

Typically, an 11-year old with a gun pointed in your direction would make for a rough enough day.

But this development was merely the beginning for Andy McNally on the latest Rookie Blue... because her mother showed up.

I had to laugh at the start of "Messy Houses" when Andy suddenly remembers that it's her father's birthday and she and Sam make a mad dash to his house in the middle of the night. Most people rectify that situation with a phone call - but not our favorite female officer. Sam's tired eyes and sleep rumpled hair were just adorable. Only a top notch boyfriend hauls his butt out of bed to go say happy birthday to your dad.

Andy's Domestic Disturbance

Then her day went sideways. Claire McNally didn't strike me as the most professional social worker. First, she walked up to a scene where there were cops everywhere with guns drawn and she told Sam she had to get in there. She didn't even tell him she was a social worker. Why would he possibly let her in?

Then she kept referring to Sam as cowboy and snarkily told him not to call her ma'am. Sam was nothing but polite but all he got back from Claire was attitude.

Should Andy have given her mother a second chance? I think Andy needed answers and it did sound as though there was more to the story than she knew.

Was her father protecting her when he wouldn't allow Andy to take her mother's phone calls or was he angry and using access to Andy as a way to get back at his ex? Probably a little of both.

I had no love for Claire McNally in this episode. If she really wanted a relationship with her daughter, nothing would have stopped her from fighting for it, but at some point Claire gave up and walked away. If there's more to that story I hope that we and Andy get to hear it.

Did you ever think Chris would be a player? Obviously he was using some bed hopping therapy to get over Gail. I know he put his heart out there again when he approached her at the end but when he found out about Gail and Nick his response sounded particularly harsh in this Rookie Blue quote

There are plenty of options. You were one of them. Now you're not. | permalink

I suppose he thought he had another shot with her and was shocked to find out about a part of her past and present that he didn't see coming. Still, that line kind of stung.

So are Jerry and Traci perfect for each other or headed towards disaster? It could be a case of two people who have made mistakes in their pasts but learned from them, yet I don't think so. First, Jerry let Traci feel like the bad guy for cheating on her ex, all the while never mentioning that he had done the same.

Then his justification for infidelity bothered me. His wife didn't love him anymore and he didn't love her. Yeah... but I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have been happy to hear her husband was in a motel room with another woman. He also said it wouldn't happen with Traci because he's happy now but all relationships go through tough times. What happens when he's NOT happy?

Somehow I just don't see Traci and Jerry lasting over the long haul.

But there's one couple who looked like they will. I believed Sam when he told Andy…

You won't get rid of me without a fight. | permalink

Something about that adorable little smile on his face and the determined look in his eyes melted my heart. Go team Sandy!

So are you rooting for Traci and Jerry? Should Andy see her mother again? And did you miss Noelle and Frank?

Loved the bonding between Oliver and Dov, both of the struggling with their current situations.
I agree if Andi's mother really wanted a relationship with her nothing would have stopped her, if also felt like she was blaming Andi.
Jerry and Traci worry me, their relationship appears to be on unstable ground, he was not very forthcoming about cheating on his ex.
I missed Noelle. This episode and last week had no scenes of them together. Still waiting for everyone to know about the baby.

This was another fanatistic episode! I too loved the opening scene AND the last scene with Sam and Andy. Sam is so great he has been my favorite since day one!
Does anyone else think that the woman that Andy's dad had over was her mom?!? I do!!! Then the crap will sure hit the fan!
I like when Dov and Oliver are together!
I knew Chris was being a player and sleeping around because he is not over Gail and he looked heart broken again when she told him about her and Nick!
Personally I think Jerry and Traci will last, but that is just me!

Andy's father is guilty of parent alienation. I hope the show explores Andy and Clare's relationship, and tackles the issue of parent alienation. It is NOT OK for one parent to use their anger and pain against the other parent in order to destroy the other parents relationship with their child. As far as I am concerned, parental alienation is a form of child abuse.

Oliver and Chris broke my heart, again :( But I'm glad Ollie finally told someone, it wasn't healthy or helping to keep this to himself. And Chris' stomach sunk when he learned that Gail & Nick were about to get married a few years ago... His reaction his harsh but it's the reaction of someone who's hurting real bad (typical male reaction when they don't want to show they're vulnerable). I am not going to comment too much on Traci & Jerry because I don't know where to stand with them... At one point they support each other and then they don't. And both are cheaters (even though we already knew for Traci) and I don't like cheaters.

Lovely article, Christine, nice to read your opinion on what clearly was the most emotionally loaded episode so far, with Andy's mom showing up after 15 years! Missy NAILED that one, she's such a great actress! I hated Claire in this episode, let's be clear, except maybe in their last scene. Why so defensive towards Sam? He's just doing his job and what's so wrong with him calling her "Ma'am" he doesn't know her how's he gonna call her? Loved the "cowboy" though ;) As for McSwarek interaction (I just can't call them Sandy, it sounds too much like a girl's name lol), even though they are the CUTEST couple to ever be on my TV screen and I love them to no end, where has the physical contact gone?! I mean in that last scene that was adorable, why couldn't Sam just put his arm around Andy and have her close to him when she clearly had a sucky day, come on... It's not like we're asking for one hour of non-stop McLovin'! The ending was so heart warming and reassuring when Andy was asking Sam to not walk out the door and for them to keep fighting for there relationship if it ever does go south (which i seriously would cry if it did, cuz they r awesome together and i do not want them to break up) and Sam saying that you wont get rid of me without a fight just made my heart melt cuz it was just the SWEETEST thing i have ever seen those to do :D When i saw the promo for this episode i was so happy that they were doing this episode with Andy's mother :)And way to go Andy for being so strong and talking back to your mom and everything, that was awesome! And i seriously did not know that Andy was short for anything, but apparently her name is actually Andrea that is interesting ;)
