Fall Premiere Preview: Is Elementary Worth Investigating?

at . Comments

Sherlock Holmes returns this fall. Yes, again. For approximately the 317th time.

What will make the CBS version of this classic character stand out? Should you give him a chance? As we breakdown a number of new programs - such as Fox's The Mob Doctor and ABC's The Last Resort - we know turn our attention to Elementary...

When It Airs: Thursday nights at 10 on CBS.

Who It Stars: Jonny Lee Miller, Lucy Liu, Aidan Quinn, Manny Perez.

What It's About: A recent rehab graduate, Sherlock Holmes takes to New York City to solve crimes while being looked after by his sober companion, Joan Watson.

Why You Should Get A Clue: CBS and procedurals are like bread and butter. No other network does them as well, nor does any give them as much room to grow. Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu have proven star power. Viewers are still angry with ABC for cancelling Miller’s Eli Stone and Liu just came off of a fantastic run on Southland last season. Together, they are a joy to watch and there is a definite chemistry working between them, which makes you invest in Sherlock and Watson almost immediately.

Sherlock Holmes, in his many recent incarnations, can’t seem to lose, and Miller’s portrayal of him is just plain fun. Sure, he’s a drug addict who could fall off the wagon at any moment and he can exasperating with his know-it-all behavior, but he’s also funny and has a soft side. That soft side is shown to Watson, and it strengthens their rapport. Watson being a woman doesn’t throw you off for even a second.

Why You Might Misread The Evidence: Time slot difficulties. Perhaps you’re already really into Scandal and refuse to let another show interfere. Maybe the idea of a female Watson just isn’t your cup of tea. If Sherlock isn’t played by Benedict Cumberbatch, then he won’t be played by anybody on your television screen! Honestly, there aren’t a lot of reasons not to check into Elementary. Use your deductive reasoning.

Recommendation: Watch. I’m not a fan of procedurals, but the writing and performances have me gunning for Elementary to come out on top. I will be shocked if it isn’t one of the bigger successes of the season.

Really, really, really LIKE this show!
I just hope its not to intelligent for the average Jersey Shore Bimbos.

i really wasent sure how i felt about the show in the beginning, but by the end of it i'm pretty sure i'm gonna be hooked....i love the chemistery between holmes & watson, it's a very cool twist on a very old team...i think it will work......i need to see a couple shows to be completly sure....

I too am still not over losing Eli Stone, however one must move on, mustn't one?
In any event I do like JLM, Lucy liu needs to win me over. I would also like to know the following; since Mr. Holmes will be a drug addict, is there any chance that during some drug induced slip that we could work George Michael in there singing "Feeling Good", hey it's TV anything can happen!

Annie, You will be happy to know that while the setting is New York, Miller is VERY MUCH English and doesn't let a pesky thing like location get in the way of being English. Also, its pretty easy to tell that Watson and Sherlock are going to have a relationship deeper than your typical "bromance" -- and NO there is no sign of romance, it's just a deeper connection as Watson has her reasons to be helping Sherlock and Sherlock realizes (and admits) he needs her too. I highly recommend checking out the first episode and be sure and stop in for my review directly after the show airs.

I'm looking forward to this one...and I like both actors so it should be good to watch. Miller and Liu are good choices for Holmes and Watson...I'm interested in seeing how this transfers to America base and current times rather than British...

I'm gonna give this one a chance. The previews look pretty good. I'm okay with Watson being female; a lot of my favourite TV shows these days are shows that put a new spin on an old story (Grimm, OUAT).

i will give it a try but really benedict is just to good no one else can compare and really a female watson just puts me off

I'm just really struggling with this for 2 reasons:
1. It's NOT English.
2. Watson is a woman, and it can't be all about the bromance like it's supposed to be now.

I'm soooooo excited, I've watched every version (movies, books' series) of Sherlock and have totally enjoyed them. This looks so exciting. I totally enjoy the actors Miller and Liu. The only thing that could mess this up is lousy writing. Let the fun begin.

I'll give it a shot but I'm not sure I will like Jonny Lee Miller's Sherlock (but I think Lucy Liu seemed like a good Watson in the preview)
