Shonda Rhimes Explains Major Grey's Anatomy Death

at . Comments

Stop reading right now if you have not yet watched last night's Grey's Anatomy season premiere.

Okay? Are we good? In that case, scroll down for a few words from Shonda Rhimes regarding why a certain character met his devastating death...

Mean Meredith

“I had many options for ways Mark could leave the show,” the Grey's Anatomy uber producer wrote on her WhoSay page. “But any option that didn’t include him dying required him to a) grieve for Lexie indefinitely and b) willingly walk away from his daughter. We fought about this incessantly in the Writers Room. I didn’t want Mark to die but, as the writers rightfully argued back, Mark couldn’t abandon Sofia and he certainly couldn’t abandon Callie once Arizona’s leg was amputated.”

Did Rhimes consider any other options for Eric Dane's beloved character?

Yes, sending him to Los Angeles to reunite with Addison. However...

that "still required Mark to abandon his child and abandon Arizona," Rhimes wrote. "And it meant that I’d have to scrap all the plans I had for Addison this season – and her plans are wonderful. Also, that would somehow suggest that everything he said to Lexie when she was dying was easily forgotten.

"So…I fought it and I debated it and tossed and turned about it but in the end, I had to do what was right for the integrity of the character. Mark would never abandon willingly Sofia and he would never willingly abandon Callie. So Mark dies. And he and Lexie get to be together in a way. Their love remains true.”

What did you think of Mark's death? Of Shonda's explanation? Watch the teaser for next week's Grey's Anatomy and sound off on this decision now!

When I first heard that Erick Danes (Mark) was leave. I knew from that day that he was going to die off the show I just didn't know how he was going to die. Because I get in to the writer head and look at the situation from all point of views. I knew for a fact that they could not work him out of the story any other way. Think about it with how much Mark has matured do really think that he would ever live Callie or Sopia if he could possible help. The first thing that came to my mind was no. He love his daugter he want to see her grow up walk her down alse on her wedding day and just be in her life compeletly. So yes I knew that much and I conclude that he was going to die off the show. Sure it was hard to see but that how it had to be written for him. The only thing that I think about is that he shold have died in the wood with Lexie but then again how they wwritten him out was nice. He died in the present of the two people who love him the most. The only thing that I want happen is that Meredith be by Derek side. I know it was hard for her but your husband best friend is dieing push your feel aside and hold his hand. At least be waiting outside to just hold him. To reasure him that even though he lost his best friend I'm right here and they just have family time. I don't know about any one else when they showed the clip of Derek and Zola I felt that Meredith should've been there. But all in all I really like the first epside back. My only hope that the season be lite and not to heavey after everything that happen in these past couple season.

why did you kill Lexie :(

It's a TV show...... get over it! Grow-up, use your brain. Realise that this was the best result for the circumstances!

I just started watching this show last year, and I really liked it, so of course I was stupid and caught up on everything via, netflix and wow all the show is about is dying,i told my hubby if i was sick please don't take me to seattle grace. I want to live....

Ok to those all who keep saying Shonda how dare you killed McSteamy:
Eric Dane wanted to leave AND RESIGNED. She didnt kill his character off for fun, and we could NOT have him replaced at all! Plus we all loved him as the man he became, a father a friend and the man who loved from far, and we couldnt imagine him to be a cold hearted basta*d to walk away from his kid and friend in need. so his death justified the story.
Shonda just honored Dane's wishes that he wanted to quit and she gave him the option.

lemme tell you all that christina is going to freak out because she thinks Owen will come to her but he aint coming. I think she thinks owen had a planecrash

Shondra is definately spread way to thin. Treating Gray's like she doesn't care about it anymore....might just quit watching all of her shows!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shonda Rhimes did not admit to E! that there were cutback on Greys. What was said was insiders said there were cutbacks. Most comments by journalists where they mention their information came from insiders and not mentioning their sources by name are just speculations and fabrications with no basis in fact.

@NattyfromOz ... MY question exactly on the time jump & Mark's instruction to remove him from life support after 30 days & the new intern "Wilson" said to Owen "they were out there for about a week." So the time frame doesn't make sense if the jump was 2-3 mos. after the rescue. The answer has to come next week when they go back in time & show the rescue. I LOVED the poignant scenes with Jackson discussing with Mark the cases they had talked about. However, I just wish ONE of them would have said "good-bye & I love you" to Mark as he died. I LOVED the scene where Owen goes to get April - even a Chief can apologize for the mistake he made in letting one of his doctor's go & showing his compassionate & human side & that is what Owen did. I LOVED the scene where the dr. at Mayo "sweetly" but VERY firmly told Cristina to take a few days for R&R - good for him!!! No superstars need apply! YEAH! And I LOVE Cristina - enough of her fighting everyone for surgeries & especially with Dr. Mark Craig from St. Elsewhere. William Daniels blew through those scenes with Sandra Oh so effortlessly & flawlessly - very unflappable, just like Mark Craig did - so happy he made a return guest appearance.

@Sa'ad702: I recently just read an article from E! on where Shonda also admitted to making cuts on GA in regards to Eric Dane. Google it.

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."

Meredith (closing voiceover)

Burke was- He took something from me. He took little pieces of me, little pieces over time, so small I didn't even notice, you know? He wanted me to be something I wasn't, and I made myself into what he wanted. One day I was me Cristina Yang, and then suddenly I was lying for him, and jeopardizing my career, and agreeing to be married and wearing a ring, and being a bride. Until I was standing there in a wedding dress with no eyebrows, and I wasn't Cristina Yang anymore. And even then, I would've married him. I would have. I lost myself for a long time. And now that I'm finally me again, I can't. I love you. I love you more than I loved Burke. I love you. And that scares the crap out of me because when you asked me to ignore Teddy's page, you took a piece of me, and I let you. And that will never happen again.
