Shonda Rhimes Explains Major Grey's Anatomy Death

by at . Comments

Stop reading right now if you have not yet watched last night's Grey's Anatomy season premiere.

Okay? Are we good? In that case, scroll down for a few words from Shonda Rhimes regarding why a certain character met his devastating death...

Mean Meredith

“I had many options for ways Mark could leave the show,” the Grey's Anatomy uber producer wrote on her WhoSay page. “But any option that didn’t include him dying required him to a) grieve for Lexie indefinitely and b) willingly walk away from his daughter. We fought about this incessantly in the Writers Room. I didn’t want Mark to die but, as the writers rightfully argued back, Mark couldn’t abandon Sofia and he certainly couldn’t abandon Callie once Arizona’s leg was amputated.”

Did Rhimes consider any other options for Eric Dane's beloved character?

Yes, sending him to Los Angeles to reunite with Addison. However...

that "still required Mark to abandon his child and abandon Arizona," Rhimes wrote. "And it meant that I’d have to scrap all the plans I had for Addison this season – and her plans are wonderful. Also, that would somehow suggest that everything he said to Lexie when she was dying was easily forgotten.

"So…I fought it and I debated it and tossed and turned about it but in the end, I had to do what was right for the integrity of the character. Mark would never abandon willingly Sofia and he would never willingly abandon Callie. So Mark dies. And he and Lexie get to be together in a way. Their love remains true.”

What did you think of Mark's death? Of Shonda's explanation? Watch the teaser for next week's Grey's Anatomy and sound off on this decision now!

I liked Mark very much and am not happy at all he’s dead. I’m not convinced with this explanation. Shonda only likes killing her characters in order to make buzz and suspense. She forgets that she made that already a lot of times and we are now sick with the dead in her shows. For me, the couple of Mark with Addison had more chemistry and was more interesting that the couple Mark-Lexie, that was a weaker MerDer’s copy (attendant and young intern). It was possible to make him work in another hospital with or without Addison in the area of Seattle and mention him occasionally in connection with Sofia. He could also be with Addison after she left PP at a place where he could see Sofia very often.

MArk must have been OKish when he transfered back to SGH. He must have put his medical wishes as a legal document.I could never see how there could be anyother ending for Mark other than dying.
Iread elsewhere that Shonda was told to make savings on GA as well as PP. Eric must have had an inkling, with the Slexie SL being over, that Mark could be written out. The new reoccuring cast won't be paid anywhere near what CL, KR & ED would have been paid. Plus you have to new interns with our residents graduating.

I would have really loved if Lexie & Mark could have reunited in the afterlife, similar to the way Izzie & George met in the Season 5 finale.

Nope Mr Mitchell. ABC asked her to cut from Private Practice. Not from Grey's. Private Practice is a costs a lot and even moving it to a new night never helped boost ratings much so they had to cut the ep order and get rid off one of the regulars.
Chyler did want to leave and Kim Ravers options ended. Why would they just fire them? Lexie is a fan favorite. If they r in the money making business, why cut their noses? I think Shonda made the right decision, not the best, but the right one in this case. Mark could never leave Sophia unless he died. And even if Shonda didn't kill Lexie and made her go off somewhere else. It wouldn't be credible as Lexies life is in Seattle. Plus how would that make Mark look if he left Sophia to be with Lexie? Not cool at all!

Well seeing as she was told by ABC to do budget cuts and she choose Eric Dane, it makes me question Kim Raver and Chyler Leigh also. Furthermore, ABC would have approached her earlier on about renewal and that would have made her options much more easier for Mark and Lexie to go off together. She has just completely ruined herself and by using the "they'll be together in the afterlife" excuse it just makes her come across as incredibly tacky.

it is really sad but if you think about it, it was the only way

I don't like how everything is depressing now! Shonda needs to bring Christina home and let it be like it was before. I understand this is a drama and it is suppose to be serious but where did all the comic relief go!?! Now they are dropping like flies left and right! Soon there will be a new Christina or bailey or Derek or even Meredith! I will admit though, when Meredith Grey leaves the show (Which she wont since the show is named after her) Then i will stop watching. but until then i will forever watch (:

i am very disapointed the way they never howed the rescue

this was a waste of time a confusing to watch. i was disappointed in the show

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

When we say things like "people don't change" it drives scientist crazy because change is literally the only constant in all of science. Energy. Matter. It's always changing, morphing, merging, growing, dying. It's the way people try not to change that's unnatural. The way we cling to what things were instead of letting things be what they are. The way we cling to old memories instead of forming new ones. The way we insist on believing despite every scientific indication that anything in this lifetime is permanent. Change is constant. How we experience change that's up to us. It can feel like death or it can feel like a second chance at life. If we open our fingers, loosen our grips, go with it, it can feel like pure adrenaline. Like at any moment we can have another chance at life. Like at any moment, we can be born all over again.

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."
