Shonda Rhimes Explains Major Grey's Anatomy Death

at . Comments

Stop reading right now if you have not yet watched last night's Grey's Anatomy season premiere.

Okay? Are we good? In that case, scroll down for a few words from Shonda Rhimes regarding why a certain character met his devastating death...

Mean Meredith

“I had many options for ways Mark could leave the show,” the Grey's Anatomy uber producer wrote on her WhoSay page. “But any option that didn’t include him dying required him to a) grieve for Lexie indefinitely and b) willingly walk away from his daughter. We fought about this incessantly in the Writers Room. I didn’t want Mark to die but, as the writers rightfully argued back, Mark couldn’t abandon Sofia and he certainly couldn’t abandon Callie once Arizona’s leg was amputated.”

Did Rhimes consider any other options for Eric Dane's beloved character?

Yes, sending him to Los Angeles to reunite with Addison. However...

that "still required Mark to abandon his child and abandon Arizona," Rhimes wrote. "And it meant that I’d have to scrap all the plans I had for Addison this season – and her plans are wonderful. Also, that would somehow suggest that everything he said to Lexie when she was dying was easily forgotten.

"So…I fought it and I debated it and tossed and turned about it but in the end, I had to do what was right for the integrity of the character. Mark would never abandon willingly Sofia and he would never willingly abandon Callie. So Mark dies. And he and Lexie get to be together in a way. Their love remains true.”

i'm really sad that mark is now off the show but i am kind of happy that his character is dead. that was really the only way for his character to leave and all i think about is that mark and lexie are "together." i did want to see an "elevator" scene between mark and lexie in this episode. i think it would have been a really good exist for the two of them.. i wanted them to show callie crying when his monitor thing went off and you see a hand on her shoulder. the hand is mark and you see him leave the room and look around at everyone and then he sees lexie down in the hall and the two walk off together...

Am a bit confused about the timeline...the show started 3 months after the plane crash, but Mark's will stated that if he was on machines for 1 month he was to be "let go." Do I assume that he was hospital/ok for the 2 months then lapsed into a coma? Or did they let him linger longer than a month? If the first option, then presumably we'll see some more of Mark next week when they do the flashback to post crash????
Confused Down Under

I will miss Lexie and Mark a lot. 48 episodes is a lot of episodes to miss them. TV MIRACLE PLEASE! I love Mark got to get back to Seattle Grace to get Love from his peeps. I wish Lexie had made it back so she could have got all the LOVE SHE DESERVED From Everyone. Especially from Bailey. Lexie didn't even get the "Bailey Speech" when Bailey doesn't want U to die like she did for george and meredith. THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN AN AWESOME SCENE. TOO BAD LOVE CHYLER AND ERIC I WILL MISS YOU SO MUCH. MUST CRY NOW I'M A OLD SAP!!

Grey's Anatomy...its a painful, emotion filled gonna miss most of these characters!
Fans: I'm so happy Izzy is in love!
Shonda: Nope, bye Denny. X'(
Fans: Oh...well maybe meredith can-
Shonda: HAHAHA ellis is dead. Let's kill the step mom too.

Shonda: You like that?! BOOM George got hit by a bus. :'(
Fans: Oh god just stop! At least just let Teddy be happy!
Shonda: Sorry guys, i have to kill Henry and make Teddy miserable again :'(
Fans: Season 8 will end good and yay then..
Shonda: PLANE CRASH Lexie is dead. How do you feel now?! X'0
Shonda: Welcome to season 9, Mark's dead X'(

explanation just isn't good enough. It could be diferent, new Mark, lot of stories with him, without sex and women!!! This is just not good, we do not want to wacth new people, we already see all that... This is wrong!!

I am not happy at all.
Shonda could have Mark and Lexie stay alive and probably move to another fantasy region like Izzie. Even if Mark wouldn't leave his child, we could have scenes that both Arizona and Callie mentioned that Mark visited for the weekend (of course this wouldn't be on screen - because the actor isn't on the show anymore). But instead Shonda killed off yet another lovable character. I am just very sad. I should stop watching this show, but I am too loyal to the other characters to give up. RIP in Mark, Lexie, George, George's father etc.
You will be missed.

It's weird. The first episode of Grey's I watched was where Mark was first introduced. I was hooked from that day on. I was so excited for this episode, but it turns out what I wanted comes next week. I balled my eyes out when Mark was dying, I say that I balled my eyes out when Lexie and George died. I hope next week is as good as I wanted this one to be. It was still good, just not how I wanted this season to start.

Even though it sucks that mark died that had to happen he couldn't just walk out on his daughter or callie and Arizona so making him die was the best choice.

Oh my I just noticed I missed the scene where Lexie actually died the last season finale. Where was I? I really did not realize this, wow I loved that character. She was smart, sweet, cute, and more. Good actress in Grey, WOW!

…So much buildup for a huge disappointment! The worst scene of the night… April and Chief Hunt, pure corn !!!!

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."

Meredith (closing voiceover)

There's a reason I said I'd be happy alone. It wasn't 'cause I thought I'd be happy alone. It was because I thought if I loved someone and then it fell apart, I might not make it. It's easier to be alone, because what if you learn that you need love and you don't have it? What if you like it and lean on it? What if you shape your life around it and then it falls apart? Can you even survive that kind of pain? Losing love is like organ damage. It's like dying. The only difference is death ends. This? It could go on forever.
