Criminal Minds Review: Dysfunction Junction

at . Comments

"Through the Looking Glass" pitted the BAU against an unsub who had a difficult time dealing with his disappointment around the lack of idyllic families. After murdering the first of two, he decided to teach the second family a lesson.

A Family Abducted

It wasn't quite so easy this week to sympathize with our UnSub I suppose. As Blake said, "there is no such thing as an ideal family."

Mind you, the Acklins pretty much epitomized the dysfunction junction of families, so perhaps he couldn't have picked a better group to satisfy his goal to ensure that they "appreciate what they had," what with those blank bullets and all. Their list of sins didn't seem all that spectacular. just a little banal: dad was unfaithful, mom was a shopaholic and daughter was either a recreational druggie or junkie. Although it was a little unsettling to find out that mom's view of homicide was a little bit...flexible.

He did manage to get the family unit talking to each other, so there's that.

It was interesting to see Blake beginning to fit in with the unit. I have to admit, this week she sort of grew on me a bit, particularly when she threw a quick joke at Reid about his perhaps having Asperger Syndrome (which of course he missed). I kind of expected she and Morgan would have some more sparks as they did in the Season 7 premiere, but this time they seemed to work well together in questioning one of their suspects.

Reid is always an unintentional source of amusement actually: his quick reply to the Ravenwood Camp director's question about the problem with America got me laughing out loud:

Camp director: Do you know what the biggest problem in America is today?
Reid: We're losing the war against antibiotic resistance.
Camp director: Smartphones. | permalink

Has anyone ever heard of Japanese minivans from the 90s being referred to as "base camps of pleasure"? That was news to me - and Google appears to be silent about it.

Beth's big news came as a surprise. I expected her to say she was pregnant. Instead she's moving to New York to take on a new job, so it looks as though she and Hotch will be doing some travelling. I was glad to see that they didn't sabotage that relationship, given his previous ex-wife's horrific death. Plus, she's a good fit: sexy, loves to laugh and seems to really like Jack. I'm guessing that we won't see much of her this season.

And, finally, we have another good exchange between Morgan and Garcia. Of course, one person's cute is another's cloying:

Morgan: Hey sweetness. What have you got?
Garcia: Tidbits as juicy as you, love shack. | permalink

So what did you think of the episode? Are you enjoying the Garcia-Morgan weekly flirt-gab? What's your impression of Blake?

I like Alex; I'm tickled to see mature individuals instead of sweet young things added to the team. Beth has to go to NY b/c the actress picked up a full-time gig on "Scandals." I'm glad they arranged to keep the relationship going. Hotchner needs to smile more!

I say they need someone other than the new woman on the team they need someone with a personality, to replace Prentiss

Don't like the new gal. she just doesn't seem to fit. Thomas Gibson has the most beautiful smile and speaking voice on TV. Wish we could see him smile more. I know that is hard with the stories but maybe on the plane home he could talk and laugh once in awhile???? I like Morgan and Garcia's way of coping

I can't stand the new character. I hope they kill her off at the end of the season.

Beth being pregnant Hahahaha that is funny.... Hotch would NEVER be that Irresponsible!!!

The thing that bothers me with Blake is that she seems to bring nothing new to the team. JJ used to just be liaison, but now she's in the field and they can all profile, so why did Emily need to be replaced? Did they just need another traveling woman on the squad?

@sonde There was a Jaime Lee Curtis/NCIS situation? I did not know that I know there was a situation between Pauly and and NCIS but I hear Curtis was so good she bringing brought back in season 10. Does anyone think Alex was the girl Ried was talking about last season

I'm sort of neutral on the new character, I guess it needs time, I just hope she doesn't turn out to be the Jaime Lee Curtis/NCIS situation. I will say that I was kind of sad to see Hotch's lady friend make moves to leave for a new job. It was so long since he was happy. The long distance thing with his schedule (he should know better) I think will be a disaster. With the people who have left CM, I got to say that the core for me are Garcia, JJ, Hotch, Reid, Rossi and Morgan. Don't miss Gideon AT ALL, maybe miss Emily a little. This show has stood the test of time because these guys do gruesome work and still remain focused and sane, I have always loved the non-delivery foreplay.
Play on!

Love this show, the review, and agree with the comments. Miss Emily a lot , but Alex is growing on me, too. Really like Garcia, but feel the flirty "love" talk with Morgan was better when their conversations were not on speakerphone so others nearby can hear, although they are completely innocent and only flirty. Even Hochner is accepting it, but does border on inappropriate office sexual banter. It's cute and wouldn't want the banter gone, but when on speaker, not only the team hears it, but so does the other first responders and victim families in hearing distance. Morgan use to answer a phone call warning her she's on speaker and she would tone it down, but not much lately.

Alex has grown on me these past few episodes, she's a fresh face and i loved the joke about Reid near the beginning. Glad that we didn't know who our Unsub was this week for a change. Can't wait for next week's :)
