Sons of Anarchy Review: Laid to Rest

by at . Comments

Having no chance to match the brutality and drama of last week's Sons of Anarchy, the FX thriller didn't really attempt to do so with "Stolen Huffy."

An especially slow episode dedicated to the burial of Opie and a new alliance with Nero, not a great deal went down in terms of the broader plot.

But that's what happens when one of your own dies, right? It feels like your world simply stops spinning.

Nero with Jax

Not that this is actually the case for Jax Teller, of course.

He's dealing with the presence of Damon Pope in his club's life, while saving the life of a rogue escort, comforting a widow, striking a deal to co-own a brothel and checking his mother's ego at the door of his darkest hour.

Jax was a very busy man, and also an angry one. That final glance was not one of sadness or regret, although he's undoubtedly filled with both. It was one of pure rage. Someone will pay for Opie's death, starting with that guard at the prison I'm sure.

But will SAMCRO's revenge extend all the way to Pope? The status of their new enemy - Bobby summed it up well, he can kill them with a phone call as quickly as a bullet - makes him a foe unlike any other the club has encountered. Seriously, when was the last time Jax admitted he was scared of someone?

While Jax tried to keep numerous balls in the air, Gemma and Tara rolled up their fists into balls and went at it with Nero's right-hand woman. I must be honest: I'm growing sick of these two.

It's the same old story every week regarding their feud, and I'm not entirely sure I even buy why it started. Or, to rephrase: What did actually start it?!? Tara's attitude and actions toward Gemma seem to be nothing more than her exerting her power as First Lady of SAMCRO, while Gemma's frustrations stem from being shoved out of her club and her son's life.

I get that, I can understand her viewpoint. But I still find it impossible to believe she'd cozy up to Wendy in response or continually manipulate every situation in her favor. Gemma is a complicated woman and certainly unafraid to play people off each other to get what she wants - but that's all she's been so far on Sons of Anarchy Season 5. Her beatdown of Nero's assistant seemed shoved in just to give Nero an excuse to feel fine about ending their dalliance.

So where do we stand heading into next week?

Pope is taking half the club's gun-running money; Nero is working with Lyla and company, aligned with Jax; Clay is putting up a surprising amount of weight on the bench press for a guy in his condition; and, with Opie now in the ground and Sons of Anarchy having taken a breath from last week's high octane shocker, SAMCRO can rev up its engines once again.

What did everyone else think of "Stolen Huffy?"

(continued) Parents try that crap all the time--it never works the way they expect it to. Gemma tried to use Wendy, and that backfired. But, Tara has been unduly harsh to Wendy, making Wendy think twice, perhaps, about getting involved in Gemma's oxy-abuse scheme. On the other hand, Tara appears to have seen the light about the boy having a right to know who his birth-mother is, but now Jax has shut that down. I don't expect Tara to comply, though, and that's gonna be the first big secret between them since coming clean to each other.

I know I'm late to this party, but I'm just catching up on season five. I haven't read ahead here, nor seen spoilers, so I'm commenting blind, atm :) When you think about it, Gemma has no friends. She no longer has Clay, though he's trying to manipulate her back into their relationship by playing on her vanity and jealousy; Jax is ambivalent about her, just now, and she plays Unser (as she seems to have always done), because she knows how he feels about her. Gemma is, rignt now, a wounded animal--and we all know how aggressive such animals can be. So is Clay, for that matter. Now, Tara has taken a piece of Jax--that's less for Gemma. Tara is also pissed at Clay, now that she knows he's responsible for her injury, but she can't strike at him, right now, so she may be taking her ire out on Gemma. Tara is also trying to show Gemma that she isn't going to allow her to take over Jax' life any longer--by controlling access to the boys. Parents try that crap all the time--it never works the way they expect it to. Gemma tried to use Wendy, and that backfired. But, Tara has been unduly harsh to Wendy, making Wendy think twice, perhaps, about getting involved in Gemma's oxy-abuse scheme. that she's still got some level of authority. These characters are awesome because each one of them reacts the only way they know how, whether that be good or bad, helpful or detrimental. Tara probably couldn't make it into the wake, seeing Opie dead up close like that, facing the ultimate result of what could happen to her husband on a daily basis is probably not the most comforting feeling for her. PLUS, how would she react seeing Clay for the first time since all the drama took place at the end of last season?

Look, everyone calm down!! This is the best written show on tv, we all know this because every week we are sucked in to the point that it takes a few days to let the episode marinate, and after talking it out with our friends we finally are able to see what/where Sutter is taking us......sort of! Tara has lost that part of her life that made her who she is/was, being a surgeon. Now she has another aspect of her life that she has no other choice to accept, and that is veing the "Old Lady" of the Pres of an outlaw MC. Plus on top of it, she sees what this club has turned Gemma into and she does not want to be her, she needs to feel like she has control of something in her life, because right now she doesn't. Gemma, she is lost! The only thing she can hang on to at this point is that her son is now Pres. She has no marriage, the scars of her and Clay's evil and greed have come to roost. She is in limbo, attempting to try to manipulate anyone or anything so she can prove to herself that she's still got some authority. So I don't fault these characters for the stupidness we keep seeing from them, their reacting to each of their circumstances in the best way they know how. Tara not going into the wake....she probably couldn't, as that is a harsh reality for her to face and knowing that that reality is something her husband faces daily was probably too much to face. Plus, how would she react seeing Clay for the first time since her husband took the gavel?

It was good, but I agree Tara and Gemma are getting quite annoying.
Tara: "druggy biker whore...but please excuse me while I light my splif"
Gemma: "atleast Im not a whore, I just cheat on my old man and get pissed when he gets any"
Carla: "life was better without those 2 morons ruining my business"

Did anyone else notice that when Wendy found out about Opie she wanted to go in and say goodbye but what did Tara do? Nothing. She never went in to say goodbye to basically the brother of the man she loves! and while Jax was trying to grieve where was Tara in the garage being manipulated by Gemma and beating the shit out of Carla instead she should have not only been a good old lady but a good wife by being there for Jax and allowing him to be weak and vulnerable in front of her! Just when I was starting to like Tara she goes and does this?

I can't get past the total disrespect shown by Tara and Gemma. EVERYONE is in the club house paying respect and saying goodbye to Opie. It is one of the saddest, gut wrenching moments on SOA. These two are in the next building beating the tar out of another woman! What kind of person does that? One minute you see Gemma crying fake tears and next she's beating someone's face in! Tara turns around all bloody and smokes a joint while the funeral is going on! She is on the fast track to losing Jax. She is NOT the woman he fell in love with and not the future he wants for his boys. Come on, seriously, she is too smart to let Gemma pull her strings that way. I am done with those two! Opie was the only hope for Jax, the only one who TRUELY cared about Jax. The best and most loved character on SOA, gone way too soon, and two of the most selfish and hateful women left to bring everyone down.

Can I just say Charlie Hunnam is bringin it! I'm not a fan of the slick hair, but his stares are freaking awesome. I liked the send off, but I will miss Opie. A strong performance by Mr. Hunnam when he closed the hearst door with that final stare. Brilliant! I agree the ladies scenes are starting to get a bit old. But hey, I they are all HAWT, so does it really matter. Turning players into Kings! Pope, OG

Sons of Anarchy Season 5 Episode 4 Quotes

Clay: You want distance, you got it. I don't even know who you are anymore.
Gemma: Why don't you bounce my face off the floor. Then maybe you'll recognize me.

You know what, mom, I kind of have a few things on my plate today, like buying my best friend, so your need to be loved, worshipped, and adored is a little low on my list today.
