Sons of Anarchy Review: Laid to Rest

by at . Comments

Having no chance to match the brutality and drama of last week's Sons of Anarchy, the FX thriller didn't really attempt to do so with "Stolen Huffy."

An especially slow episode dedicated to the burial of Opie and a new alliance with Nero, not a great deal went down in terms of the broader plot.

But that's what happens when one of your own dies, right? It feels like your world simply stops spinning.

Nero with Jax

Not that this is actually the case for Jax Teller, of course.

He's dealing with the presence of Damon Pope in his club's life, while saving the life of a rogue escort, comforting a widow, striking a deal to co-own a brothel and checking his mother's ego at the door of his darkest hour.

Jax was a very busy man, and also an angry one. That final glance was not one of sadness or regret, although he's undoubtedly filled with both. It was one of pure rage. Someone will pay for Opie's death, starting with that guard at the prison I'm sure.

But will SAMCRO's revenge extend all the way to Pope? The status of their new enemy - Bobby summed it up well, he can kill them with a phone call as quickly as a bullet - makes him a foe unlike any other the club has encountered. Seriously, when was the last time Jax admitted he was scared of someone?

While Jax tried to keep numerous balls in the air, Gemma and Tara rolled up their fists into balls and went at it with Nero's right-hand woman. I must be honest: I'm growing sick of these two.

It's the same old story every week regarding their feud, and I'm not entirely sure I even buy why it started. Or, to rephrase: What did actually start it?!? Tara's attitude and actions toward Gemma seem to be nothing more than her exerting her power as First Lady of SAMCRO, while Gemma's frustrations stem from being shoved out of her club and her son's life.

I get that, I can understand her viewpoint. But I still find it impossible to believe she'd cozy up to Wendy in response or continually manipulate every situation in her favor. Gemma is a complicated woman and certainly unafraid to play people off each other to get what she wants - but that's all she's been so far on Sons of Anarchy Season 5. Her beatdown of Nero's assistant seemed shoved in just to give Nero an excuse to feel fine about ending their dalliance.

So where do we stand heading into next week?

Pope is taking half the club's gun-running money; Nero is working with Lyla and company, aligned with Jax; Clay is putting up a surprising amount of weight on the bench press for a guy in his condition; and, with Opie now in the ground and Sons of Anarchy having taken a breath from last week's high octane shocker, SAMCRO can rev up its engines once again.

What did everyone else think of "Stolen Huffy?"

I also feel sad that Opie is gone. Bring him back as a long lost twin brother or cousin. He was my favorite on SOA.

First, I do not get Tara and Jax's hatred of Wendy. When she was a junkie, doing drugs while pregnant, Jax was supportive and almost loving. Now that she has accepted, several times now, her responsibility in what happened to Abel the first few weeks of his life and has been successful in her recovery, why are they so unwilling to come to a compromise with her. It's bad plotting in a story line that already has more then enough drama much more vital to the plot. It's just drama for the sake of drama. The conflict between Gemma and Tara is essential to the long term plot. That is why I don't get why it is being done so poorly. Both of these actresses are talented and Sutter has proven to be a great writer in the first four seasons and in some elements so far in season five, but the handling of this part of the story line leaves a lot to be desired. TV needs strong women, and up until now they have been, but so far this season they just spoiled little brats. I was against killing Opie last week, but if that is what was going to happen at least it was done well. The finish was done even better. It was subtle, with just the right amount of pathos from the club. The last look from Jax as the episode faded sets up what is to come and I hope they follow through. That rage in Jax's face needs to lead to something big or Opie's death is all for nothing. I like the long con analogy that someone used last week. The club's vengeance against Pope should be served cold, but it should be served. In this story the SOA are our heroes and they should come out on top, at least where Pope is concerned.

I get the half assed feud between Tara and Gemma. Tara is coming into her role as queen. The ass beating she handed Nero's pimp mama was a sure sign of her sociopathic tendancys, lets not forget that Tara has committed one murder up at Gemmas dads house. This feud is more about the reckoning each one of them is going through. Gemma is deposed of her power as clays right hand. And Tara has to show Gemma that she is here to stay....what I saw tonight that should concern all of us, is clay hanging out with the nomad guys the club just voted in and lifting weights. Clearly he is getting stronger. I felt it was a bit soon for this in the writing process since last week he could barely walk ten feet without resting or falling over. The single biggest threat jax should have is a strong clay with a desperate Gemma at his side. I'm certain the same two people that killed j t will not think twice to depose at the very least if not kill anyone or anything that stands in there way. By now most of us Us have seen the scene called oh brother where Jax drives off a bridge.....another sabotaged Harley perhaps? The whole idea of the show is that it's basically hamlet on Harley's.......Shakespeare ......we all know how that ended. Jax will die....but when .....and at who's hand?

Another sabotaged bike sliding off a bridge into a ravine could be the endgame for jax. This is after Shakespeare's Hamlett on harleys, and we all know how that ended......

what was the name of and who performed the song at Opies wake?

How is it possible that Gemma can play the once confident, self assured MD like a broken fiddle? This is mind boggling. Jax says he untwisted his mommy issues, but he obviously doesn't see that his wife is becoming a broke down version of Gemma... Right down to the greasy hair and half smoked joint.

we lay a brother to rest ........AMEN !!!! RIP !!!OPIE !!!

Agreed. I'm more than a little sick of the Gemma and Tara feud because I'm not really sure how it started. And what the f*ck was the point of Ashley Tisdale?

Sons of Anarchy Season 5 Episode 4 Quotes

Clay: You want distance, you got it. I don't even know who you are anymore.
Gemma: Why don't you bounce my face off the floor. Then maybe you'll recognize me.

You know what, mom, I kind of have a few things on my plate today, like buying my best friend, so your need to be loved, worshipped, and adored is a little low on my list today.
