The Vampire Diaries Review: O Holy Fright

by at . Comments

As we head toward the Christmas season, it's safe to say The Vampire Diaries is in a major holi-daze at the moment.

What had been a promising start to Season 4 - with Elena learning to transition successfully, her bond with Damon growing stronger by the day, a menacing hunter in town and even a strong storyline for Jeremy - has devolved over the past three weeks.

It all came to a confounding head in "O Come, All Ye Faithful," as Damon set Elena free and Klaus went all Emily Thorne on his former sired protege, killing Tyler's mom out of revenge.

Tyler v. Hayley

Let's start with this illogical, contrived sire nonsense.

Damon can only free Elena from the spell by essentially compelling her to stay away from him... but that doesn't actually free her from the spell. She's forced to obey because she still is sired to him. So the move creates nothing but physical distance between the pair, with the feelings remaining intact. Because it's also been explained by Tyler that being sired to someone has nothing to do with one's feelings for that person.

So... we have two options, right?

  1. Elena remains close to Damon, sired, and the two carry on a relationship based on legitimate feelings. The only caveat would be that Elena listens to whatever Damon says.
  2. Damon orders Elena to stay away, which means only that: she stays away, but both yearn to be with each other.

Why, again, must Damon choose option number-two? How, exactly, is that doing the "right thing" by Elena? And why on earth was any of this trumped up, aside to drag out the love triangle further and further and further?

I'm confused, and - far worse - I really don't care about any of it.

On to Tyler's elaborate plan: He wanted to bury Klaus inside of him and then bury himself inside of concrete (temporarily, somehow) in order for the unsired hybrids to disappear. But I must be missing something here... because can't the unsired hybrids just disappear anyway?

Tyler is a hybrid and he's been free from Klaus for ages now and the two have nothing to do with each other. What was stopping those other creatures from just saying sayonara to their creator? Fear of Klaus killing them for such a transgression? He didn't kill Tyler.

This plan only grew more elaborate when Rebekah's body was brought up, which led to Hayley's secret text messages to Shane, which may have been more intriguing if we knew anything at all about Hayley. I never thought I'd diss a character played by Phoebe Tonkin, but she's pretty much just been Tyler's wing-woman this entire time (conjuring up pretend witches for the audience and her supposed friend).

I don't feel like I know her or are invested in her storyline simply because she's seeking her birth parents.

Similarly, Tyler's actions regarding the hybrids seemed noble and all, but it would have been helpful if we have known any of them. Or if we had spent awhile delving a lot deeper into Tyler's sense of responsibility for their well-being. Instead, his Alpha status and the whole set-up felt rushed together and unnecessary.

Which is too bad because Mayor Lockwood paid the ultimate price.

Talk of a death to close out the episode has been all over the Internet, and it was easy to predict she would be the victim once she shared that heart-to-heart with her son. Am I glad Klaus is back to his killing ways? Am I curious to see the fallout from this vengeful act and how the Tyler vs. Klaus war will be waged? Absolutely.

But it was a winding, confusing mess that took us there.

I'll end this negative review on a few positive note, however:

  • Rebekah is coming back! Hooray!
  • It would have been more appropriate if the episode aired yesterday, but this 12 (dead bodies in 1942), 12 (dead council members) and 12 (dead hybrids) angle - along with Shane's "We are the beginning from "We'll Always Have Bourbon Street" - is very interesting.
  • So is the concept that Jeremy must keep killing vampires in order to find the cure.

What did everyone else think of the outing? As you mourn Mayor Lockwood, sound off: has The Vampire Diaries lost its way a bit? Should Damon have let Elena go? What, precisely, are the duties of Miss Mystic Falls?

Episode was good outside of the scheming from Tyler's plan, Very Elaborate and Straight up stupid, and it became more confusing as time progressed. 5 minutes in the episode, i rolled my eyes at how utterly retarded the plan was, I hope no one believe for a second the plan would work. And yes Alpha Tyler plan was so rushed, it was not once believable, How the hell did he form this pack in the spam of 7 episodes!! Another neg would be, the directing for the Klaus vs Hybrids was horribly done, looked like 12 humans running as fast as snails for there lives, was done really poorly.
To the positives, Tyler's foiled plan Resulted in the deaths of the Fxxking annoying Hybrids, there all dead and they will not being taking any more minutes of TVD. PLZ dont bring them back. Shane seemed pretty cool and witty this episode. All interactions in the Gilbert house were nice to see. Stefan coming to the realization that he and the rest of Gang are no better then Klaus. April release Rebekah!!! Praying for an AprilXRebekah love interest. Beremy back up, i hope. Stefan finding out about Delena sex. Liked most of the episode, but it was still too confusing. Klaus killing Carol was epic.

Hating the sire bond. My advice would be for D and E to just keep having sex to try and break the sire bond. Makes as much sense as Damon destroying his own chance at a relationship with her

Totally called it. The professor wants to bring Silas back! My guess is he wants to him to bring his wife and son back. Something along those lines. Whether professor Shane is evil or just dumb my guess is Silas is gunna be the new "big bad". Or I could be all wrong!

I loved the episode. Everything about it! :)

I am so confused on this whole sire bond thing and the hybrids storyline. It was rushed and went no where. Seriously is they weren't sired to him anymore why didn't they just leave? Made no sense! I have a feel Hayley's parents have something to do with the storyline. Also excited for the silas storyline and jeremy becoming a hunter. Still can't tell if Prof Shane is evil or not. Super bummed Damon let Elena go :'( not excited that rebeka is back. She was super annoying and tired of her trashing out because someone hurt her feelings. Oh well looking forward to the next episode and the rest of the season :) hopefully it doesn't get any more confusing

Well it wasn't the strongest episode, but it did tie up some storylines, even if it wasn't a very epic way to do so. It is nice to have the evil Klaus back, though I'd still really like to see something develop with him and Caroline! So please don't put her with Stefan... I guess I'd pick Stefan over Tyler too because he's always been a drag. But I love her chemistry with Klaus. It was nice to see Bonnie and Jer interacting again and hopefully rekindling their romance so she's not completely useless? Plus I love Jeremy and want him to be happy. I don't hate the sire bond storyline but I'm hoping she'll just push through and be able to overcome it herself to show her feelings for Damon are real. Can't wait for Rebekah to return!

seriously, does nobody see the issue of elena and damon having a relationship when elena literally has to do everything he says? what happens when he is annoyed with her and goes 'jump off a cliff?' you can't have an actual relationship when one person doesn't have contol of their actions. it's like being in a compelled relationship- caroline was effectively raped by damon by forcing her to stay with her. no wonder she doesn't trust him- it's basically the same thing

Damon elena thing- not hung lol

I never thought I'd say this, especially after kind of gettig delena- the show makes no sense. I was on my phone playing bubble busters while watching. I'd never do that! I'm zero invested in Tyler, I don't care that his mom died, I just don't get the damon elena hung, Caroline makes no sense on why she's so Invested on telling Stefan not to trust damon. They're talking about klaus dying and feeling bad and all of a sudden lets tell Stefan about delena sex? Good gracious who the hell cares. And they didn't really leave off with a cliff hanger. Like oh no Tyler will be sad? I don't even know Tyler!! And oh no Stefan is mad at damon? Uh so????????????? This isn't tvd. It was so good in te beginning but they butchered delena they butchered
Caroline for me for LIFFFFE and I don't care about hybrids dying!!! They're all such losers!!! Uch please don't ruin this show!

Seems like Stefan and Caroline is going to develop Stockholm syndrome for Klaus. I guess it was going to be Carol. The greatest scene was Klaus being a mass murderer and that is the Klaus I want. Cannot wait for the rest of the season because the Originals are coming back, yes.
