The Vampire Diaries Season 4 Report Card: B-

by at . Comments

The beginning was awesome. The end was shocking. The middle... left a bit to be desired.

Before we think too long and hard about The Vampire Diaries Season 5, let's stop and reflect, TVD Fanatics. From Elena's adjustment to Stefan's plunge, it's time to analyze the ups and downs of The Vampire Diaries Season 4.

What worked? What failed? What overall grade do the 23 episodes deserve? Read through our Report Card below and then weigh in with your take...

Elena Gilbert at Graduation

Best Episode: "Memorial." A candidate for best episode of all-time, from the well-filmed action inside the church to the surprise appearance of Alaric at the end. One of the few installments to not end on a cliffhanger, this taut hour combined suspense and sentiment in a way only The Vampire Diaries can pull off.

Worst Episode: "Into the Wild." Way too much Professor Shame yammering and far too little accomplished for an episode that was meant to be a climax to The Cure storyline.

Best Performance: Nina Dobrev. She showed fear and confusion as a newly turned Elena; confidence and strength as the character accepted her new undead status; cold-hearted bitchiness after her humanity was switched off; and an outpouring of tears, anger and sadness once it came back on. An impressive, season-long whirlwind of emotion from the actress.

Worst Performance: The dude behind Silas. It's almost as if he was just impersonating other cast members every week!

Best Spinoff Idea: The Originals. We were skeptical at first, but consider us hooked. Though we still think our own 'Ric and the Dick brainchild has real potential too.

Unsung Hero: Matt Donovan. He came up big at the funeral. He helped train a hunter. He got Elena's humanity back. All while logging double shifts like a madman! Oh, and there's a 90 percent chance he will get in Rebekah's pants this summer. Score one for long-maligned Matty.

Biggest Shocker: The reveal of Stefan as Silas' doppleganger. A close runner-up: That time Bonnie smiled.

Most Beautiful Blonde: Caroline and Rebekah (tie). Come on, like we could choose?!?

Hopes for Season 5: That Damon and Elena stay together; that we never hear from or see a ghost in Mystic Falls ever again; that Katherine is killed; that the show can tell a slightly more consistent, all-encompassing narrative. The Cure arc was really all over the place, relying on leaps in logic and culminating in a side character being force fed the elixir. The Silas storyline, meanwhile, may have stunned viewers with its conclusion, but it failed to catch on as any kind of gripping arc for the duration of the season.

Overall Grade: B-

VD this season was totally amazing but honestly I changed my mind about delena... There just not meant to be! PLEASE get damon and Caroline together in the next season. He always watches out for her and saves her but never gets a chance for Caroline to say thanks in any way! Daroline!!!!

only did they rip off trapping Stephan in a safe and throwing him into the water from Angel season 3, they ripped off Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Silas turning into everyone and having the "Scooby Gang 2.0" not being able to tell if it was Silas or not is THE SAME THING as The First Evil in the last season of Buffy. The. Same. Thing. I would advise not to rip off the two shows in the same genre that the biggest cult following of that genre. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of The Vampire Diaries, but it can't touch Joss Whedon's Buffy and Angel.

What was all over the place for me and down right ANNOYING was that damn Sire Bond, which did not make any sense whatsoever. Why does Damon & Elena have to go through so much just to be together and when S5 returns, they'll be separated [Damon in Mystic Falls, Elena off to college]. There had better be some Elena/Damon Vamp speed to one another for some long awaited intimacy, which was totally destroyed S4 by Stefan & Caroline. The season finale made up for a few horrible episodes. There were too many emotional let downs S4, therefore I gave it a 'C'! Definitely not the best season! On the other hand, TVD gets an 'A' for All Damon Salvatore Scenes though!!!!

The season finale was worth the wait, sort of. The main thing I'm glad about is that Elena was not turned back to human at the end of the season, and doubly glad that Katherine is now human (didn't see that coming) and has been left vulnerable. The writers did not make the obvious choice. I didn't really buy Bonnie's 'descent into darkness' (it would have been too Buffy anyway) and even after everything Damon has done, we're still glad he gets his girl. Again, if Stefan is Silas' doppelganger, does that mean that Silas' girl is a Petrova. I thought Esther created the spell to create vampires, using Tatia's blood, wouldn't it have made more sense to explore that storyline first, VD doesn't usually leave plot threads.Klaus gets off scot free, and even Rebekah gets a happy ending.
I think that the writers are not exploring Katherine's character, enough, in this season she is too vicious and one dimensional, starting with killing Jeremy and then trying to kill Elena because 'she stole her life'. Any sympathy you have for her, especially during Season Two when Klaus kills her entire family when she tried to protect herself, is gone.
Glad that Jeremy is back though, they cut his story short far too quickly.

Spindae 2o

Biggest shocker: Kaley baby. Come on that was briliant. Silas Salvatore. hmmm that means the brothers are witches as well.I doubt that would be so easy unnoticed. It'as a big move lets see if they can handle it.
Best Blonde: Sheriff Forbes. ;)
Hopes for S5: That the Bonnie-Jeremy thing really works and not get forgetten after 5 eps and resurfuses in ep 22.
Delena work together and than crash like a card house.
STAROLINE HAS TO HAPPEN REALLY FAST.
And a main cat should finaly kill Taylor. Please!
Grade: B overall. but the last 4 eps were pure gold.

Spindae 2o

Best episode: We all go a little mad sometimes! Elenas flashes were tremendous. She went completly out of it and who didn't loved that! ! !
Worst episode: Into the wild or Because of the night. I wanted so much more from that NY trip.
Best performance: Nina of course. She gave Elena that 3rd and 4th dimension. And who says emotionless Elena and Katarina are the same is so wrong. Elena is fearless but Katarina is driven by her fear. So U just had to realize the tiny differse. And Clair Holt nails it everytime just look at her in The Five.
Worst per.: Bonnies Dad. so anticipated but so awful.
Spin off: The episode was so good on so many levels. Daniel Gilles

Now with the double doppelganger storyline we can all make fairly good guesses as to where the story will go from here. Tatia, Katherine and Elena are all doppelgangers of the girl that Silas loved. She will also turn out to be Qetsiyah's sister. Qetsiyah put the doppelganger curse on them. Silas' doppelganger would forever be in a love triangle with his brother and the female doppelganger, and she would forever be between 2 brothers. These two doppelgangers would always be epic loves that could never end up together. We will learn that Katherine always knew Stefan was a doppelganger because the father of her baby was a Silas doppelganger. So in the end for Elena to end up with Stefan they will need to break the doppelganger curse and defeat Qetsiyah, or they will fail and Elena ends up with Damon and the cycle will continue.

This season however we knew where we were ending up long before getting there (big deal we didn't know Stefan was Silas' doppelganger). That reveal has probably given us the series finale ending 1 or 2 seasons too soon. Yes, in season 2 we knew long before he arrived that Klaus was coming. In that season our hero protectors of Mystic Falls were doing everything to try to prevent it, unlike this season were we could see them making all the wrong choices. Having our heroes be anti-heroes made for a very long and bad season. How on earth was Kol the only hero of this season??? And as a reward he got killed off, a very unfulfilling season.

"The slaughter of innocents by the so called hero protectors of Mystic Falls. They risked unleashing hell on earth for their own selfish gains." Kol was completely correct about the problem with season 4, we also knew way to early that they would awaken Silas. The path these characters choose was anything but heroic, and we as an audience could see every wrong move they made as they were making them. Seasons 1 and 2 were great, 3 was OK, but 4 was awful. In season 1 first Katherine was dead, then she was in the tomb, then she wasn't in the tomb. The consequence of trying to free her was setting the big bad tomb vampires free. We had no clue where we were going until we got there. In season 2 we had the "Sun and Moon" curse morph into the hybrid curse on Klaus. Klaus wasn't just the oldest baddest vampire, but a werewolf hybrid, again we had no clue until we got there. Vampire Diaries Quotes

You want a love that consumes you. You want passion and adventure, and even a little danger... I want you to get everything you're looking for. But for right now, I want you to forget that this happened. Can't have people knowing I'm in town yet. Goodnight, Elena.

Damon

I wanna say thank you for giving me everything I always wanted. A love to consume me, and passion, and adventure. There's nothing more I could ever want than for it to last forever, but it can't. This is the last time I'm gonna see you. This is goodbye, Damon.
