Grey's Anatomy Review: Surviving the Storm

by at . Comments

Welcome back, Grey’s Anatomy fans! Just like every summer, I’ve been counting down the days for the most wonderful time of the year and it’s finally here. Our fall television shows have returned and our favorite doctors are back.

Tonight, Grey’s Anatomy hit a milestone by kicking off its 10th season with a two-hour premiere that was in true Shonda-fashion being dramatic, emotional and riveting.

Awaiting Victims

We were left with a number of questions following "Perfect Storm." From wondering if Meredith’s baby was okay to pondering if Webber made it out alive, "Seal Our Fate" brought these lingering questions to the forefront and featured the doctors facing the devastation left by the storm.

With Webber narrating, there was more reason to worry for his well being. Things grew even more intense when Heather tried rushing to his side but was also electrocuted and suffered massive head trauma. It was no wonder Shane was feeling guilty, as he was the one who sent Heather to go find Webber in the first place. I really liked him before and can't help but be kind of mad at him now.

Thank goodness Cristina showed up as her badass self and bought Webber more time by successfully performing a risky procedure. However, there just wasn’t enough of it. Webber required additional emergency surgery and the decision to move forward was made by Meredith, who was designated as Webber’s medical power of attorney.

Heartfelt stories were aplenty when a giant mudslide injured a number of patients and first responders.

Elsewhere, the doctors had their own drama. I was shocked when Callie announced that Arizona had cheated on her. Then, my favorite new couple, Jolex, just couldn’t move forward in the on-call room. Also, April realized that she wanted Jackson back. Overall, it was a crazy hour with so much going on all at the same time.

MerDer and Baby

The second hour, “I Want You with Me,” opened with the doctors continuing to fight to save Webber’s and Heather’s lives. Catherine Avery showed up and wasn’t too pleased that Bailey was opening Webber back up again. She screamed at the top of her lungs and while his vitals worsened, Bailey made the decision to close him back up before she could find the root cause.

Luckily, Meredith later decided that the risk was worth taking and wanted Bailey to give her best shot one last time. This time around, Bailey saved Richard’s life and found the damaged tissue in Webber’s pancreas. Bailey is still awesome and I loved that Meredith was willing to reconsider.

Unfortunately, Heather wasn’t so lucky. While Derek did all that he could, it just wasn’t enough. We knew so little about Heather and this showed even more as the other interns tried to think of nice things to say about her to her mother.

One thing I will certainly miss about Heather is her quirkiness. With her death, it’s clear that the other interns will grow closer and we’ll continue to learn more about them. Last season, I didn't care to learn too much about this new group, but my mind is slowly changing.

Meanwhile, Cristina and Owen couldn’t seem to keep their hands off one another as they continued to try one-upping their last special memory. Are you rooting for these two to get back together or will they eventually end up apart?

Calzona’s future is also in question. Callie and Sofia are staying at the dream house because Callie simply needs a break from Arizona. For the time being, they will take turns taking care of Sofia. Look, I get that Arizona knows she messed up big time and is sorry but I think it’s way too soon for Callie to just forgive her.

Arizona needs to give Callie some real space and let her have time to think things over. Do you think that Callie will ever be able to forgive Arizona?

Lastly, I was really glad that Jackson was totally blunt with April and told her exactly how he felt about her wanting him only when she thought she was going to lose him. I didn’t expect for April to propose to Matthew right away, and am not so sure their relationship is going to stick. I was never a fan of Japril, but Matthew seems like a really nice guy.

Other Thoughts:

  • Chaos was at the forefront, but I was stoked to see that the McBaby was perfectly fine. I loved seeing Auntie Cristina snap pictures of the new baby boy and Meredith calm Alex down by having him hold baby Derek.
  • Did you catch all of the mentions of the former characters including Mark, Izzie and George? I miss them all.
  • Don’t forget to check out the typical memorable Grey’s Anatomy quotes.

All in all, I thought the two-part opener was solid and am stoked to see what the writers have up their sleeves for Grey’s Anatomy Season 10. Like always, Shonda and company know how to keep us captivated and always wanting more. Share your thoughts in the comments below!

The season 10 premiere was okay but the "person" and BFFs before family schtick is getting tiresome and overblown. Meredith sitting in her hospital bed preaching and directing everyone else, Cristina overly attentive to babies (give me a break), blubbering Callie, on and on. If the writing does not improve, Grey's will be dead by the end of the season. Perhaps Shonda and Co anticipate this. The only reason its being kept alive is to use it as a lifeline to Scandal until it can stand alone. And for people who don't get why new characters are added to shows, its because the more years shows air, the more expensive they become because actors demand higher salaries with each contract (and rightly so). The salaries of the originals are eating up the budget for the show. Everything else has to be done on the cheap. You can whine all you want but the originals could never carry this show ALONE in 2013. The audience has changed. To get younger viewers interested the show needed to bring in youth, some who have their own fanbases. Its business, whether you like it or not.

I'm tired of saying this but I go again. Those interns are not and should not be the focus of this show. The chemistry between them and others is not there I, along with many others, want to see the originals. They are why I watch the show. Even Owen is annoying. Derek was pt in the background, maybe Shonda is punishing him because he likes racing. But really, his airtime and storylines was just awful. I look back at the reruns and there is no chemistry like Derek and Mark, Jackson does not make up for that. And his mother is just an unwanted guest. Get back to the originals, Derek, Webber, Bailey, Alex, Christina and Meredith. If the show changes and it's about those interns, I'm going to have to stop watching.

@Meg
Tessa Ferrer's mother is Debby Boone and her grandfather is Pat Boone.

I like the interns. It's time for new blood on the show. Don't know why you people can't accept that the originals won't be on forever. Mousey was not my favorite intern but her death was sad. I think it's interesting that the actress who portrays Leah is from Hollywood Royalty like Jessica Capshaw. Her mother is the singer Debbie Gibson and her grandparents are Rosemary Clooney and Jose Ferrar. I think George Clooney is her uncle. I'm interested in seeing more of Leah and the other interns. And I love Japril. Hope they get back together.

First off, i'm not liking the intern pairing anymore. Seeing alex and jo, im not feeling it like i did last year. think they're better off as friends with some sexual tension or something. Jackson and April needs to happen. but i understand why jacksons mad. he wanted to be with april but she said no. so he moved on you know stuff is going down when its someone else who's narrating. the actor renewed his contract right???
cristina wow. the character develpment is so beautiful. when she was with all the children wow. her performance was so amazing and its sad to think that this is gonna be her final season. and her goodbye to owen.
mousy's death was bad and i liked shane but i dont think i can forgive him for that. just so he could assist shepherd.i didnt like how the interns stole meredith's story just to help the mum. really did not like that. and after all the hours they logged in at the hospital, the time they spent together, they dont even give a crap about each other. come on. that was disgusting. the flood gates were opened when arizon went to mer's house because she missed sophia. truly the tears were flowing and i just couldn't anymore. i dont know whats gonna happen. you're my girl ic ant

A question is this Matthew guy will stick for some episodes in Grey's? I mean has it been told? I ask this cause it seems the actor playing Matthew will also appear on Hawaii 5-0 this new season so I got confused if an actor can be in 2 different networks doing different characters at the same time

No one knew that lady was Mark did really

I liked when the guy intern went running into the ambulance and the girls eventually followed him....then the slow motion shot from the back....the 3 girl interns...one blonde, one brunette, one black-haired....alluding to Meredith, Izzie, and Christina....

I am so glad Jackson told April off. I have never liked Jackson/April. Run Matthew-April is cra cra! They should have killed her off! Derek Bailey Shepherd aka McNightmare Jr. Really? Bailey/Meredith/Catherine fighting over Webber-so funny. Love Webber/Catherine. Love Christina/Hunt. Now they know how to do a love scene. Will miss Ms. Oh! Don't miss George/Izzie at all. Miss Mark. Can't stand Callie/Arizona. Loved Callie saying I don't dance in my underwear anymore. Stop being herself to be with wuss George & cow Arizona. Arizona blames Callie for losing her leg and cheats on her and thinks Callie is just suppose to talk about it and forgive her. Like Callie said you did not want to have a baby. The baby is Mark's and Callie's not yours. You have no rights to her. Callie leave Arizona behind and start dancing in your underwear again!

The only decent intern has died :(. Webber survived, no surprise. I don't blame Callie for being so angry with Arizona. There has to be consequences for Arizona even though I get her defensive angry speech when she got found out. Chris seems to be desperately holding on to OWen when she knows it's time to let him go. Kepner's fiancee should have left after witnessing Kepner's meltdown over Avery.
I'd rather Derek Jnr was called Lee(to honour Bailey still)
