Castle Review: She Dotted the i!

at . Comments

It took Richard Castle's "Number One Fan" to set things right once again at the 12th precinct - and I couldn't be happier.

So let's start at the beginning…

An Armed Suspect

Just as I had hoped, Kate Beckett was in an emotional free fall after the Feds fired her. She was even floundering around in Castle's bed, lamenting her options since the NYPD refused to let her back in due to a hiring freeze.

Kate: What am I going to do, just sleep in every morning and screw around till the phone rings? What kind of life is that?
Castle: Mine. | permalink

And you can't say Castle doesn't make it look good. But how about a whole new theme for Castle season 6? Kate Beckett: Mall Cop. Probably not, but Beckett's probably the only woman in the world who could rock that uniform.

Moving on…

The loft has gotten way too cozy. I couldn't believe it when Pi just walked into Castle's bedroom unannounced. I wouldn't tolerate that type of behavior from a family member,  never mind a houseguest. I have to assume that sooner or later things will come to a head.

Until then, I'll just keep repeating my mantra, believing that eventually I will get my wish. It's time for Pi to go.

Guest star Alicia Lagano did a wonderful job as Emma Riggs. The character was unstable enough to be scary yet vulnerable enough to make me care.

I also loved that Castle's first response was to get the mother and child out of the hostage situation, even if it meant putting himself in harm's way to do it.

And I thought Kate hit just the right notes of humor, confidence in Castle and fear for his safety as she told him in this Castle quote

Kate: I've been kind of looking forward to spending the rest of my life with you so don't do anything stupid in there, OK?
Castle: Don't worry. I think I've already hit my stupid quota for the day. | permalink

It was wonderful to see the entire team working together once again. Lanie was finally back and never mind the dead body or the hostage situation. Lanie wanted to know about the important things... a Caskett wedding! But Beckett told her they hadn't set a date yet and just wanted to enjoy their engagement.

Since we're only up to episode 4, I can get on board with that plan.

Did anyone else wish Castle would have duct taped the jerk in the dentist's office? Although I did love Castle's comment about him having watched Die Hard one too many times. And I found it very funny that the man most vocal about getting out of a hostage situation was the one to ask if the donuts were gluten free.

Castle: Dude, they're donuts. Either you're in or you're out. | permalink

I wish last week's promo for this episode hadn't given away Castle being shot. It would have been much more dramatic if I hadn't seen it coming. However, I did love Castle's amazement at how the vest worked and how Emma's bullet dotted the i in Writer. It was a very Castle moment.

I worried that Emma's father would end up being the bad guy and was greatly relieved when that turned out not to be the case. After a very hard life, it's about time Emma had someone in her corner. And I couldn't get enough of having the boys back together yet again.

Ryan: What does it say about your writing when your number one fan tries to kill you?
Castle: That was an accident.
Esposito: One inch higher it would have been a tragedy. | permalink

Beckett and Gates also made quite the team. Captain Gates has come a long way. She took over the interview of Aaron Stokes not because she didn't trust the boys but because she wanted to protect them from any fall out. Then she went out of her way to get Beckett her job back.

She even gave Beckett an engagement gift. Richard Castle as her trusty sidekick…or should I say partner, once again.

Overall I had just one complaint: I wanted a longer kiss at the end. Nit picky I know but that won't stop me from asking for more.

But really, with romance, mystery and a Nikki Heat pop quiz, what more could Castle fans ask for?

ukno. Agree. The writers want to be clever with the persistence about the Pi character in the storyline, but it presents to make the Alexis character irrelevant to the storyline in the long run. Alexis is not without value as long as she is used properly. The Alexis ongoing lack of respect for who Castle is makes her really unattractive as a person. Pi has no redeeming qualities. If the writers want to frustrate fans with the Pi character, they are doing it all wrong. Pi is a drain on any scene. If you met a person like him in real life, you would curse on him. What are the writers thinking by using him at this level for so many episodes? It makes no sense really.

Loved your review. You hit on the best parts of this episode. I am enjoying the different Kate Beckett we are seeing this season. And yes, Pi needs to go.

If Kate still has her NY apartment, why don't Pi and Alexis move into it... It was a great ep and I was finally seeing the real Castle dynamic I love, humor, romance, action.
I felt sorry for Kate when the whole family barged into the bedroom. I would be hiding under the covers too!

Although I saw 10-11 minutes of sneak previews on Sunday night, it didn't matter, this episode was amazing, classic Castle, suspense, fun and romance, although number two in the ratings, in viewers we are at 11 million plus if Castle continue to be steady and increase audiences here and there, Castle should be renew for season 7. I love that we saw the complete cast in this episode, I am too very impressed with Alicia Lagano, her "Emma" was outstanding.

I also got a good LOL out of Castle's "cheeseburgers" and several of his other lines. This show is so good. I also like Alicia Lagano in "The Client List", she's funny.

Vince, Yeah, totally agree on Pi being rude. Not only did he not knock before coming in, he was also eavesdropping. Even if I can look past the "not knocking", I cannot forgive eavesdropping on a couple's intimate and private bedtime conversation. Ridiculous of the writers to shoehorn that scene into the episode. As someone said last week, it is painful to see the lengths the writers are going to just have a single scene with Martha and Alexis, so that their characters are not forgotten. At this point, hardcore Castle fans just want more of Caskett and the 12th, and I am sure we wouldn't mind less or no scenes with Martha and Alexis. That is the painful truth unfortunately.

The 6x4 episode compares favorably with 4x7 “Cops & Robbers as expected given the consistent fine writing by Terence Paul Winter. Alicia Lagano (Emma) was great in the suspect character role. One of the best I have seen as a guest star. The Pi scene in this episode was ridiculous and IMO very disrespectful of the Beckett character. Castle refusing to enforce the needed boundaries in his home with Alexis leads to that jerk walking into his bedroom to ask for a razor. Pi is just rude, but both Martha and Alexis show no respect for Kate and Castle by not knocking before coming into bedroom. Kate needs to move back into her old apartment until Castle gets his act together. The episode continues with a lot of wedding talk, but you must wonder if it will actually happen this season.

Whoever cast Alicia Lagano in this episode is an absolute genius. She was amazing, and if she gets any other tv roles, I would watch just for her. Really terrific job. On the other hand, whoever decided this whole Pi thing was a good idea...ugh. Just...ugh.

Firstly, the opening bedroom scene was pure perfection. I'm a HUGE Castle and Stana fan, and I thought Beckett looked ABSOLUTELY gorgeous in bed...and always...I think she looks great in every single....episode....I honestly like how the writers delivered through in that they didn't make the episode too romantic. Don't get me wrong, I love the romance and Caskett, but it's good not to make every episode so centralized on romance. We also got a good amount of it this episode and every episode thus far. There's still an ENTIRE season to build on the romance and relationship, so I think it's good that they're taking it in small pieces. I honestly don't think Pi is all that bad, but that's obviously ONLY my opinion. I think it was a nice way to end the bed scene because it shows they're all comfortable..probably too comfortable though....But yes definitely not in the bedroom. That was kind of off.....

Also apologies for the comment spamming, but I loved Ryan and Esposito's reaction to Beckett "ordering" them to go search the place again. Espo: "I will grab Sully and go check again just in case. But not because you asked me to coz I am actually on my way to..." It was played perfectly. I keep mentioning to others that the reason Castle is so awesome is not only because of the chemistry between Fillion and Katic, but also because of that between all the cast members, and that, in essence, is what the show missed in the first two episodes. It was plain to see for everyone. And it is good that Gates is fully on-board with Caskett now, and she's essentially completely taken over from Montgomery (Bless him!) as far as being the superior cover to our guys is concerned. I loved how she protected Ryan and Esposito. Also made for another moment of Nathan Fillion awesomeness when he wanted to be in for the interrogation. God, I love this show! Ok, I'll shut up now!
