The Originals Review: Declarations of War

by at . Comments

War has been declared on The Originals. The spoils? The city of New Orleans... The witch Davina... Power... Elijah's body. You know, typical vampire stuff.

In the Battle of Elijah, Klaus and Rebekah are the victors. Sort of.

Davina's kind of the winner of everything and she's only 16. Maybe she's peaking early?

"Tangled Up in Blue" showed that Davina is the key to Marcel's power and is, obviously, the one thing Klaus wants more than anything. Even his own brother.

Marcel and Cami

Even when Elijah is daggered in a coffin and dessicating, he still manages to make an impact. Photographs. Voiceovers. Whatever. He's there in spirit.

Is it weird that fans would take the spirit and voice of Elijah over no Elijah at all? He's just that important.

When Marcel refused to give Elijah's body back (sidenote: of course he would refuse, but Klaus "just had to ask"), Klaus and Rebekah declared war on Marcel. (As if they hadn't already done that two weeks ago?) That's where the fun began.

One of the things that is consistently making The Originals great to watch is how we're getting to see new sides to these characters. Their plan to infiltrate Marcel's inner circle even further was a work of art. Set up a vampire! Plant a spell! Kill a witch! The plan was mostly Klaus', and we do know he's diabolical, but Rebekah including Cami as a distraction was a stroke of genius.

In order to defeat Marcel, he has to become Marcel's right-hand man. That's step one in his plan for taking over New Orleans. How does Klaus do that? By creating a situation that caused Marcel to go full-on Montresor on his current right hand man Thierry when Thierry broke one of his rules.

Vampires don't kill other vampires.  We all know by now that Marcel loves his rules. But all's fair in love and war, right?

Klaus and Rebekah, thanks to two un-vervained vampires, created a situation where Thierry would be forced to choose between his loyalty to Marcel or his love for a witch. Thierry chose love, just like Klaus knew he would, which gave Team Elijah the chance to make a move.

One way or another, Klaus intended to get into Marcel's inner circle. And while Marcel will never trust Klaus - not fully, because he knows Klaus - Marcel likes being alive. Klaus called an audible and took the opportunity to kill Katie just before Katie killed Marcel and that helped to cement his place next to Marcel.

Sending Cami to Marcel with only the memory of a perfect party instead of the confrontation she witnessed probably didn't hurt Klaus' cause either.

I like Cami and I'm liking that this love triangle is shaping up to be a much more adult one than a certain other love triangle also involving two vampires and a human once did. Cami brings out the humanity in both men; in Marcel because he likes to see the world the way the humans do and in Klaus because deep down, he's broken and searching for a connection.

He has money. He has power. The thing he's missing is love.

It will be interesting to see what happens when Cami figures out that the men she's sharing deep, emotional gazes with are really vampires locked in an epic battle for their city. A battle which centers around a certain teenaged witch.

Step two in Klaus' long con is to obtain Davina.

Of course Klaus wants Davina for himself and of course that revelation comes just after we watch him cozy up to Cami. Soften our hearts to the man just to harden them again posthaste! He doesn't care about his family. He just wants all the power for himself.

But after witnessing Davina's power, is there really any question that he would want that? Given everything we know about Klaus, no, not really. More than he has a thing for blondes, or even for his family, Klaus has a thing for power.

Something tells me that finding out Davina is the reason Marcel won't hand over Elijah will only make Klaus work harder to find her. And Klaus will find out. He always does, doesn't he?

What did you think of "Tangled Up In Blue?" Did you like the way their plan came together? What do you think about the love triangle shaping up between Cami, Marcel, and Klaus?

(cont.) character and allow us to get more in sight into the witches outside of when it involves Marcel and the Originals. Overall these writers are doing a great job so far and are putting TVD to shame.

I really love this show more and more with each episode. My complaints have remained consistent though: I want Haley to become interesting, I want Elijah to get to be an actual character on one of these shows for once, and I want Davina to never open her mouth. Seriously Davina is scary as can be when doing magic but the second she opens her mouth I couldn't be more annoyed by her. I still wish the writers would bring Caroline to this show but I can deal with Cami while she isn't here. I really don't know who I like her with more though. She softens both Marcel and Klaus so much (in a good way) and it is something that is really needed for both to remain well layered. They should continue that love triangle until Caroline drops out of college and comes to her senses (btw is she even with Tyler on TVD? I no longer watch). Also love the idea of Rebecca and Marcel. There is great chemistry there that I love seeing explored. I would really like Sophie to become more prominent of a character and allow us to get more in sight into the witches outside of when it involves Marcel and the Originals.

I'm trying to watch this show, but everybody is so bad that I don't care about any of them right now. The way Klaus just killed that witch and send that vampire to some cave, I hated it.
And seriously Elijah in a box?
Please give me a storyline that I can root for and balance badness with good reasons. Or this show will be just powerful bad people doing bad things, just because they can.

in all reality I don't see Klaus gaining any victory.... the character has been so damaged from The Vampire Diaries in that he couldn't even handle Damon and Stefan who are mere child Vampires compaired to him.How is he supposed to take on Marcel and his whole city full of vampires when he couldn't even best the Salvatore brothers ?? lol.

Klaus is a psychopath; people keep forgetting that because he's the "hot" anti-hero... He killed Tyler's Mom for fuck sakes.... along with hundreds of others, but deep down, he is troubled and can only handle his problems by acting out violently. The immortality makes him extremely narcissistic and controlling, being a bastards will ALWAYS haunt him and make him feel like an outcast. The character development is brilliant and the manipulations and machinations that Klaus is pulling off; gaining Marcel's trust, killing the witch by getting the right hand man to kill another vampire by proxy. He's pretty much Machiavelli's poster child on how to obtain, consolidate, and maintain power. He's like an immortal, superhuman Cesare Borgia... and he LOVES manipulating people....which was evident by his outburst of "I will NOT be manipulated" to Elijah in the first episode. Manipulators HATE being played or conned, but Klaus will win this war...his way

I'm just LOVING the love quadrangle of Klaus, Cami, Marcel, and Rebekah - siblings excluded obviously - and can't wait to see how that plays out.

I think Klaus not pining over Caroline right now is because before leaving Mystic Falls he made it clear to her that he cared about her and that they had an eternity to find their way to one another. He's not waiting on her but that doesn't mean he won't be there when she's ready. Meh. I can be okay with him being into Cami because it doesn't mean he's *not* into Caroline. She's just not there. And yes, the "Klaus has a thing for blondes and his sister is a blonde and can't have a man" thing? Not lost on me. Not at all.

What the f is wrong with Hayley - how did she not recognize that as Latin? Guess she never made it past fourth grade

I really enjoyed this episode!
I can not stand Davina! She seems to be the only person that Marcel is afraid of as he listened to her when she said to not give Elijah back.
I really wanted him to follow through with that but I guess Elijah will be with Davina for a little longer.
Klaus sure loves his blondes! You can tell he likes Cami but he has push her towards Marcel to keep his plan in motion.
I did love the look on Klaus's face when Hayley said they were most likely having a girl. However I really want to know what that witch saw and what that saying is, hope Hayley finds out soon.

Klaus is confusing acting week when he is the most powerful one really hybrid. Seems like they are messing with past info they already gave us from Tvd. Everyweek shouting you cant kill the orginals. Not public knowledge ,but they should be treated as royalty if every vanpire does not want to die. Gross alert, he seems drawn to blonde girls and his sister is blonde. Sister can never have a boyfriend. I think Davina has a crush on Marcel. teenager not predictable. Best episode yet

The Originals Season 1 Episode 3 Quotes

Klaus: I ordered you to drain him of blood.
Joseph: Sorry. I'm not, like, medieval torture expert guy.

Klaus may be a miserable excuse for a sibling but there is none more diabolical.
