The Vampire Diaries Review: In Remembrance Of...

by at . Comments

More than halfway through "For Whom the Bell Tolls" I was moderately bored by this week's The Vampire Diaries. I was ready to rate this episode a solid, mediocre 3.

Then Jeremy revealed a secret we've known since The Vampire Diaries Season 4 finale and everything went to pieces.

Partying in the Woods

The lives of the group in Mystic Falls was forever altered, the way it has been so many times before. And this time, I found myself crying along with them.

Starting from the beginning, it was Remembrance Day in Mystic Falls. Because this town doesn't have enough holidays already? As Damon tells it, people used to bury their dead with a string that was attached to a bell above ground for them to ring in case they were actually buried alive. Now, like so many other holidays, everyone uses it as an excuse to drink.

That said, drinking is supposed to curb a vampire's thirst and with the amnesiac Ripper on the loose, curbing hunger was definitely a good thing. It's too bad Elena had to take things one step too far by bringing Stefan down memory lane. Don't get me wrong, it was great that she wanted to help Stefan because he's helped her so many times before, but she fully let her emotions and her memories get the best of her. It was mere minutes before Elena was flirting with Stefan, talking about fond times from their past only to drop the ax on the guy when he kissed her. It's not his fault he felt a romantic vibe, he doesn't remember!

Amnesiac Stefan, as soap opera as the plot may be, has a different perspective than regular Stefan. He sees things simply and he sees them from another angle.

Instead of all the love triangle crap we're so used to, he sees that his ex-girlfriend is now with his brother. And quite frankly, that sucks to be around. I like Damon and Elena together, but I also liked Stefan and Elena together. Bottom line, no matter who you like together, it would suck to see your ex with your sibling and have to hang out with them. He doesn't want to be the guy from the journals and with his memory erased, now seems like the perfect time to hit reset.

I was so glad to get some good old-fashioned Stefan/Caroline scenes again. Even if Stefan wasn't quite himself, I always enjoy their dynamic and their friendship. I also liked that even though he couldn't remember Caroline, he knew he could trust her. Speaking of Caroline, her sexy plot device boyfriend is back! Tyler, where the hell have you been, man?

Stalking witches on The Originals?

So with all of this chaos, who does everyone want to turn to for help? Bonnie. It's been a lot on Jeremy to contain her secret for all of these months and even though he went against her wishes, it was ultimately the right call that everyone knew the truth. Bonnie eventually saw that too. Her funeral scene, particularly when Elena brought in the feathers reminiscent of The Vampire Diaries Season 1, was a total tearjerker. Especially when Bonnie spoke to each of them through Jeremy:

Jeremy: I'm not sure what else to say.
Bonnie: Say that I'm not going anywhere. Say that even though they couldn't see me, I've been there the whole time. | permalink

So the real question now, is Bonnie gone for good? As Damon said in the previews, he wants to kill Silas to bring Bonnie back. Could crazy Qetsiyah help out? Also what's up with Dr. Maxfield and his experiments? Hopefully we'll get more answers regarding that now that Bonnie has demanded the girls return to college!

I actually really loved this episode. I'm all about Delena, but it was really nice to see Stefan this way. This was my favorite version of him. He was just so light and carefree about everything. He'd be a lot more likeable if he continued on that way! I was pretty disappointed when Tyler showed up. I really would like to see the writers give Caroline and Stefan a chance, especially since they just teased us the entire time with Caroline and Klaus. Tyler and Caroline used to have great chemistry. But he disappears from the show way too often for way too long for that to even be relevant anymore. Seeing that Kat Graham isn't leaving the show, I'm sure we will, unfortunately, see her brought back to life somehow. The funeral scene was done brilliantly though. They're great at those emotional scenes. It was hard to hold back the tears. Also, Damon hugging Jeremy like that was so unexpected, I loved it!

I honestly think stefan is not getting enough attention. Damon well is going out with elena so hes taken care of lol. but honestly, after everything stefan had done for the gang it shouldnt really just be elena and caroline badly wanting stefan to have his memory back. It should be everyone including carolines mom.
Its just sad to see how less stefan's situation is being shown. the dude literally drowned for a whole summer and then the minute he gets out, his mind is wiped out.

- I missed Katherine. And Silas (but only to a certain point).
- Bonnie. The whole thing is pretty ridiculous. I'm tired of it, won't even explain how bad this is. At least, now people know she's dead, but is she really?
- Lack of focus. It feels like this show is shoving all the plotlines possible at once. We have all sorts of arcs: Silas' agenda, shady teacher's whatever, Stefan's amnesia, Matt's "posession", Bonnie's dead or alive "thing", Elena's love life, Tyler's "stuff"... anything else?? I love TVD, so I want better out of it. I'm curious to see where it goes.

What I didn't like:
- Stefan. So, if you have amnesia you lose your personality and turn into a jerk? He isn't the reaper anymore, shouldn't be acting like this. He doesn't remember Damon or being with Elena, so he has no right to feel offended by their relationship. Not now.
- Elena. Oh please! The more I watch you the less I can stand you! You couldn't help yourself could you? Had to take your chance to seduce Stefan back, because having one brother just isn't enough, is it? It was unbearable to see her forcing Stefan to remember his love for her, actually it was cruel making him remember something painful, plus she is with his brother now. She just must hurt the ones that love her. When she got Stefan trying to kiss her, she stops halfway realizing "Ups, I'm with Damon". Urgh! I was so happy that Stefan forgot her, I wish he'd stay like that!
- Tyler. Why did you come back? I had accepted that he was gone. There are no excuses for the way he treated Caroline!

I don't think Stefan was a jerk at all. He didn't lose his personality, that's his true personality, from Season 1 you can tell. He just doesn't carry the guilt for the ripper thing or the hurt for the double betrayal he suffered. And be honest, if you have no memory of who you are, would you trust the two people that you know betrayed your trust before to help you deal with everything? That's not being a jerk, it's being rational. Elena did nothing to gain his trust, she just tried to manipulate him into being in love with her again just to inflate her ego, instead of telling him right away she was with his brother. His brother, on the other side, didn't tell him anything either. So Stefan's really isn't the jerk in the situation, is he?

I've been following this show since day one, but I have to say: I didn't like this episode. Before saying why, I have a suggestion for the writers: since Stefan is amnesiac and Katherine is human, make them meet and fall in love! This would make the show much more interesting...
Back to the point. The things I liked:
- The relationship between Damon and Jeremy. Please, give us more of them, it's so warming!
- A new vampire arises. I just hope that this one turns to be a cool vampire, because I like Jesse and I'm tired to see every character that turns becoming a jerk or a monster. If he's a cool guy, can't that be heightened? He could keep a great personality, contrasting with Tyler's (and Caroline would notice it)
- Matt's plotline is getting interesting. It makes me mad that nobody cares about it (even his friends don't pay him attention).
- Caroline and Stefan. Even with amnesia in the way, they still have a friendly chemistry. What I didn't like:

I see a chance for Steroline, yay! I was afraid Stefan with memory loss would be a drag, but towards the end of the episode, his choices absolutely made sense. He know has an "objective" point of view of his life and why would he want to stay with his ex-girlfriend who deserted him and a brother he knows nothing about? Go Stefan! Sooner or later his memory is going to come back, though, obviously. And Zach Roerig was FANTASTIC! That camera scene was creepy stuff.

I do not remember the last time I cried like crazy when I watched a show. I just lost it when they had the funeral for Bonnie and then when Tyler showed up I cried even more! I thought when they all said goodbye to Alaric 2 seasons ago that was emotional, but this was way more emotional for me.
I am not sure how long Stefan will have amnesia for. I like it but at the same time I do not like it.
There were some pretty great moments at the beginning of the episode seeing Damon and Stefan bonding and the whole safe brother/fun brother was great.
However when Stefan left the house because to him he was betrayed by Elena and Damon and now the only person he can trust is Caroline. It was also do bad that he was not there to say bye to Bonnie because this Stefan has not idea who Bonnie is.
So is Tyler back for good?
I was sure Jesse was bad but he is not, now he will be a guinea pig of sorts for Dr. Maxfield.

Oh, and by the way, am I the only one who finds it odd Bonnie didn't say anything to Damon? I mean, I know they're not exactly friends in the normal sense of the word, but then again this wasn't a normal occasion. They've both only had their friends best interest at heart, and I think something a long the lines of "I know you will give your life to keep everyone safe" would make sense. After all, he took the time to dress up for a funeral. And not everyone can brag about having a dressed-up Damon at their funeral.

This was, in my opinion, one of the best episodes since season 4 started. It was so nice to get a break from all the ridiculous new and diluted mythology they've been shoving at us. I hope Bonnie stays gone though, as the lot needs to be learn to find other ways to solve their problems (should be good practice for the writers too). Seeing Matt break down at the remembrance was really heavy. He's supposed to be the stalwart, "I'll-take-on-all-of-your-crap-so-you-don't-have-to" type of guy, so I guess he had a lot to let lose. All in all, and apparently in contradiction to most of you here in the comment section, I would like more episodes like this.

Amnesia was the best thing to happen to Stefan. He finally told Elena and Damon off....and they deserved it. Even Delena fans have to admit...he has a right to be angry. Frankly...I hope they keep Stefan this way. He sees things more clearly. And I'm so hoping that tonight was foreshadowing for Caroline and Stefan. He doesn't remember anyone, but he immediately feels he can trust Caroline. Come on! And frankly...Elena was acting a little jealous when Caroline had done all the research about Stefan's condition (even if it was also for another reason). What was Elena's solution...try to make him remember how much he loved her. Um....How in the world is that a good thing!?! It's very arrogant if you think about it. But...I've always thought Elena was a bit self absorbed.
