Sons of Anarchy Review: A Long Dark Night

by at .  Updated at . Comments

Where to even begin?

First off if you haven't watched Sons of Anarchy Season 6 Episode 11 then you need to STOP reading right now. Massive Spoilers Ahead!

Okay. You've been warned.

Clay's Out

"Aon Rud Pearsanta" opened with SAMCRO preparing to break Clay out of his prison transport. The plan included four delivery trucks, even one in pink for Tig. That was one of the few smiles we'd get all night.

When the Officer started shooting back as they made their escape I remember wishing he'd just let them go. Now I bet he'd wish the same thing... if he were still alive. I wonder if Juice felt like he was wearing a white hat when he mowed the man down?

When the crew walked into the back room with the Irish, I flinched when they took out Galen O'Shea and his men. I really never saw it coming. At least not at that moment.

Then things really got weird…

Perhaps it was the setting. Inside the mostly empty hangar with its sterile white walls, everything felt cold. When Clay hugged Juice something felt horribly off, as though we were just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

And drop it did.

It was sad to see Clay completely resigned to his fate. All he had to hear was that they'd held a vote, and it was unanimous. Because this was the code that he lived by and was now about to die by.

Having Tara, Gemma and Nero look on from the window was nothing short of chilling. And Clay's sad, longing look at Gemma just before he took a bullet to the throat almost made me feel sympathy for him…almost.

If anyone needed a reminder that Jax Teller is a cold blooded killer, they only needed to look in his eyes when he killed his step-father. There wasn't a hint of hesitation or remorse in his gaze.

Not that Clay deserved it. Tara ran down Clay's most recent crimes for Nero. Clay had killed Piney and then tried to kill Tara to cover up his role in John Teller's death. Tara certainly didn't mince words when she explained to Nero how she felt in this Sons of Anarchy quote

Clay Morrow should have been dead a long time ago.

Tara

For most of this season I'd been thinking that Clay's death was overdue. With all of the tragic, grisly and shocking murders on this show, I couldn't figure out how Sons of Anarchy could off this pivotal character and make it memorable.

In the end, it was the quiet calculation by all of SAMCRO that assured I'd never forget the execution of Clay Morrow. Remind me never to doubt Kurt Sutter and company again.

Clay's death was only part of the story. Tara's life was in a complete state of limbo. Jax still had her under surveillance and when Bobby was shot, he called for her help and I absolutely loved her reaction…

So what, we just pretend nothing happened and I'm mob doctor again?

Tara

That was the reality. In that moment, all was put aside if she would save Bobby, but how long will that last?

Tara obviously saw the lengths that Jax was willing to go to make permanent changes in SAMCRO. As much as she wanted Clay dead, was she truly OK with his murder?

When Patterson put a deal back on the table, it appeared Tara was grabbing for it with both hands.

It would have been so much easier on her if Jax hadn't been so understanding. When he told her he was sorry that being with him took her to such a dark place, it really was heartbreaking for both of them. But Tara's running out of options. Will she take that bullet and send her SAMCRO family to prison to save herself and her boys or will she come up with another plan?

On the flip side, I appreciated Unser's honestly with Gemma. She has this fantasy in her head about how Tara will disappear and she'll have a second chance raising Jax's boys. Unser made her face reality.

This isn't 1967 anymore, sweetheart. This life, it ain't romantic or free. There's no path to anything that makes any sense. It's just dirty and sad and we both know it's only going to get worse.

Unser

As Gemma and Nero sat in bed reading to Abel I was struck by how sad it would be if she never got to see her grand babies again. And once again Nero's Zen pimp daddy persona won me over. He loves Gemma. He's great with the kids but he's no fool.

No offense, mamma. I've seen what happens to your husbands. It ain't pretty.

Nero

So with Clay dead and Jax trying to bury the past, will Tara change her mind? As she stood there holding that bloody bullet it was anyone's guess what was running through her mind but one things for certain.

She's in for a very long, dark night.

I taught it was amazing in this season that the first episode ended with the Leonard Cohen song Come Healing , that redemption was possible . You had some sympathy for Jax in earlier episodes when he was trying to bring the club together and out of guns but after he committed his first murder that was lost and now his character has deteriated in to a cold blooded physopath. You almost felt some sympathy for Clay aswell after what he suffered in prision but now we are reminided of how evil he was. I often think it should have been called Sons of Bitches instead of Sons of Anarchy as there are no good guys in it , even law enforcement motives are suspect. But its all about the story and amazing script writing and this episode was a total shocker , eliminating two strong characters in one episode . I did not see it coming.

Best episode this season imo.
Tara has sweet lips. That close up shot in her office. Loved it!
Loved the execution of Clay, and the fact it was a unanimous vote. The tension, eye contact from Jax to Clay, Gemma's reaction and the extra bullets from Jax into Clay's chest. Talk about the actors bringing their 'A' game. When they took out Galen and crew I was shocked. Great episode!

I think Sutter waited to kill off Clay when nobody expected it - come on, we were all pretty surprised. You would expect it at the end of a season, but not a couple eps away. He does like his shock & awe (no matter what he says). I also believe the shot in the neck was for two reasons - first, Jax hates Clay and has wanted to kill him for many reasons for many months; the shot in the neck would be more painful, albeit only for a few extra seconds, but it's not as fast as a bullet through the brain. I think Jax wanted him to suffer, even for just those few seconds. Secondly, the story they are giving the Irish is the had to shoot Clay in the heat of the moment; a shot on the fly would not be carefully placed throughout the center of his forehead, especially since, one would assume, the target would have been moving and on the defense. It makes the story slightly more believable. I want to know what changed Bobby's vote for Clay to meet Mr. Mayhem; he was the only one who saved Clay last time. I also really appreciated Tig turning away. You could tell he knew it had to be done but he was also upset because this was a man he loved, his best friend at one time, and Tig helped put him in the position to be killed. I think he is a little remorseful.

All that build up with Clay and he dies like that? I'm not a fan of that scene. Why would Jax from close range shoot someone in the throat so they can bleed out everywhere... doesn't make sense in the real world.

By the way, I'm glad Clay is dead. Tara forgot to mention that Clay ordered the death of Opi but accidentally killed Donna instead, his wife. Opi never recovered from this which of course lead to his depression and subsequent turmoil with Jax. Opi and Jax friendship was one of the main reasons I watched this show. When he died, I guess I knew then that Jax would walk this road alone and never get out. For me this puts Opi and his family to rest.

Ding dong the King is DEAD. Did not see that coming, I really thought Clay was going to be reintegrated with the MC again under forced conditions from the Irish. I have to say, I hope this puts an end to the Irish storyline, I get tired of them saying Irish all the time. Loved it when Clay said "Where's the Irish ?", and Jax said "in Ireland." Look this isn't Fox, this is FX there was no way, they were going to pull off a prison transport hijack without blood. Kurt Sutter is constantly reminding us that there is NO romanticizing SAMCRO. They have the blood of the innocent and the guilty on their hands, remember they killed the mother of the child shooter which of course will come back to bite them. They suffocated her with a pillow when she was to supposed to overdose on drugs which will automatically make it a homicide. This is not a Camelot with Prince Charming and long lost Princess make everything good by washing it all away with blood. There is no happy ending for Jax and Tara. Which is extremely hard for me to say, because I honestly believed that they would have their happy ending. However, Sutter has shown us in a slow unfolding of decisions made by the characters that this is the path they chose. I'm not even sure there is a happy ending for Jax at this point. I need him to recognize this and let Tara go with the kids. This is not the life he wanted for himself however it is the life he is living. If Kurt Sutter has taught us anything is that blood must be answered with blood, retribution must be paid. SAMCRO has much to answer for.

they should have handcuffed or zip tied the cops.

OMG ! Wow... what a well executed plan ! Except for the sheriff dying. I swear I didn't see Gaalan's death coming ! Something did feel off though... Clay hugging Juice was def one of them moments. I didn't quite catch the vote thing intil it was too late. Clay being cornered like that (literally) had me feel for him for a moment, brief one, but still. And BAM ! Jax shot him, again, and again. The look in his eyes...no hesitation ! Gemma's reaction though, also in the car when she said she hated him, was that during their marriage or after he hit her? Tara holding her hand was a bit awkward as well. As for Nero, I thought he was gonna quit. When Gemma mentioned marriage, even before he answered I started laughing coz I knew he was gonna say something about her dead husbands.
Unser's words were sooo true ! She's trippin ! Does she really think that it's all gonna turn out according to her plans ? Tara IS their mom ! Now that Jax and her "kinda" talked, is she gonna rat ? However for me, that talk wasn't enough. Nothing moved forward ! Sure he understands, but does that mean he'll let her go, or what ? Patterson is not ok with the way Jax handled things, so the deals are off the table then ? If it's all up to Tara, I have no idea how that is gonna go down.
Still playing mob doc ! So funny, I liked how everybody "hates" everybody, yet they put all that aside to save Bobby. REALLY ? I loved his face when he saw Tara getting on the van and then looked at Jax like " REALLY?Seriously?"
2 weeks wait !!!! What to do, what to do ! Kurt Sutter sure as hell didn't disappoint ! 2 episodes left and I still don't know how it's all going to turn out !

Sons of Anarchy Season 6 Episode 11 Quotes

Unser: I know your heart was in the right place.
Tara: Unfortunately where my heart is means very little.

We've got a rough history, me and her. I'm just trying to help her more than hurt her for a change.
