How I Met Your Mother Producers Apologize for #HowIMetYourRacism Scandal

by at .

It took a few days, but Carter Bays has taken to Twitter and addressed the controversy that arose out of How I Met Your Mother Season 9 Episode 14 on Monday.

Not long after the installment concluded, #HowIMetYourRacism was trending because many viewers were offended by Cobie Smulders, Josh Radnor and Alyson Hannigan appearing in yellow face while Marshall explained how he mastered the Slap of a Million Exploding Suns.

In a series of Tweets on behalf of himself and fellow creator, Bays wrote this morning:

"Hey guys, sorry this took so long. @himymcraig and I want to say a few words about #HowIMetYourRacism. With Monday's episode, we set out to make a silly and unabashedly immature homage to Kung Fu movies, a genre we've always loved. But along the way we offended people.

"We're deeply sorry, and we're grateful to everyone who spoke up to make us aware of it. We try to make a show that's universal, that anyone can watch and enjoy. We fell short of that this week, and feel terrible about it. To everyone we offended, I hope we can regain your friendship, and end this series on a note of goodwill. Thanks. @CarterBays @HimymCraig."

This episode was the worst... not because I thought it was racist (although I kind of admit I was a teeny tiny bit offended) but it was not even funny. It was the worst episode of the season.

Used to love his show then it became the Barney the bonehead show and I lost interest

I just watched Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2 about two days before this episode and laughed my ass off at HIMYM when they spoofed it. Not once did I think it was racist at all. I just thought Marshall concocted a very loose story based off the movies. I love HIMYM, and I respect the producers for apologizing to a group of people who were offended. Can't wait to see more of HIMYM!

So, going by the comments, I assume only racism against black people counts?
If someone is going out in "yellowface," it's still racist, just as racist as blackface. THINK, people. Seriously, use an iota of your brain.

I am deeply offended by racism, but it never crossed my mind that there was anything racist about that episode until I saw this. I don't want to minimize the feelings of anyone, but I'm truly puzzled by this.

Oh my goodness it's so sad that so many people didn't get the reference to Kill Bill.I wonder if they thought Tarantino was racist too back then!!!Just watch good movies and leave good shows alone instead of preaching.

Even after this article, I still have no idea what should have been racist about this episode?
For me, this episode was hilarious, one of the best in the last season (so far)

omw. get over yourselves. they paid homage to kill bill vol1 and 2. everyone whose seen these movies would have known that. they were not being blatantly racist. you know that is the saddest thing about this world, when people cant even still laugh at themselves. humanity is overrated, we take ourselves so serious on things that don't matter, yet we take for granted what is really important in life and that is to give love and not always expect everything to be received. wake up people before its too late.
