The Tomorrow People Review: Mommy Dearest

at .  Updated at . Comments

In my review for The Tomorrow People Season 1 Episode 12 (in between all the squeeing over the John and Astrid scenes) I berated myself for not figuring out that Luca was a paranormal. Well, don't expect me to do that again in this review because, I mean, come on.

Who knew that was coming?

I am not going to feel even remotely embarrassed about the surprise at the end of The Tomorrow People Season 1 Episode 13. Stephen's mom being a paranormal was the best kept secret this show has had so far. While I had some moments of wondering about Luca, not once had I even considered the possibility that Marla might have powers.

It makes perfect sense though, knowing what we know about Stephen's abilities and powerful he is. The revelation does make me wonder if Jedikiah has known all along or if he has no idea either. I'm guessing he doesn't know because it would seem like he'd be trying to capture Marla if he did know.

Then again, who knows? That guy could also have a million reasons as to why he would keep something like that a secret.

Go to hell, Jed.

Thanks to Cassie's story and discovering that her father (aka the Founder) and her mother were both paranormals, we know that Stephen is a synergist. But it also makes him less unique than we thought he was. After all, Cassie is also out there and perhaps there are more.

Does this mean that maybe Stephen doesn't have to carry the entire burden of saving all of the paranormals himself? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

The Founder: Where is Mr. Jameson?
Jedikiah: He quit.
The Founder: See, that word implies he had a choice in the matter.

I had the pleasure of doing an interview with Madeleine Mantock (who plays Astrid) earlier this week, so I had a pretty good idea that nothing was going to happen between Astrid and John.

I think I'm okay with them being friends for now. I like the bond that they have and if that turns out to be romantic, I will enjoy it probably even more. But I'm not dying for it either.

When I was lying there, bleeding out, not sure if I was gonna make it. It wasn't Astrid I was thinking about.

As for John and Cara, I found myself kind of rooting for them in the beginning of this episode. Like I've said before, it's not necessarily out of a feeling of being certain that they belong together. It's more that I feel for John when he's pining for her and it broke my heart a little when she told him they needed to forget the kiss.

Could it have been a little bit of resentment then that led him to rebel so hard against her orders? Honestly, I don't think so. John was leader long before she was and he definitely has his ideas of how things should be done. I guess it was bound to happen that they would have a major dust up, but I don't think I expected it to happen quite this fast.

Respect or obey, Cara?

Where will John go and what will he do now? What will Stephen do now that he knows about his mother? Will we ever see Cassie again? Those are questions we have to wait at least two weeks to find out. I don't know if I'll be able to hang on that long, but I'll try.

What was the biggest shock in this episode?

Love this episode. The whole Cassie story was really interesting and I really hope we see her again. The actress that plays her I've seen her in other things and it was weird hearing her have a British accent. I'm glad Luca doesn't have powers I never wanted him to and finding out Stephens mom is the one with power was a huge shocker I suspected she knew more than she was letting on like knew about paranormals but never that she was one. That explains why Cassie and Stephen have a connection they're the same type of paranormal and it also explains why Stephen is so powerful. I was surprised when Cara kicked John out and I hope he doesn't stay kicked out for long. Can't wait till the next episode I really want to know what's going to happen next now that Stephen knows his mom is a paranormal.

So Cara just became my top choice for worst female character on TV! since Elena Gilbert on VD I havent disliked a character so damn much! John isnt perfect but both him and Stephen can do better. I was starting to get over the whole cheating thing and now she goes on this power trip..

i dont think this makes stephen any less unique he and his father are the only ones that can stop time

@ highlandwolf

And his mom

I loved this episode because we got a lot of development and I am glad they are using the actress that plays Marla more. She is amazing and now that they have given us more of her, its great.
I still don't get what Ultra is about but I am getting the feeling that they are not there to protect the humans, I think the Founder has other goals in mind. He truly is a monster and I seriously hope that they can kill him by seasons end.
I hope we get another season because The Tomorrow People has found its pace now. Its a great show and I hope it can last. The one thing I don't get and they have to deal with it in the next episode is the fact that Marla has been berating Stephen for lying and everything that happened to him before he learned of his powers yet she had powers and knew that it was very likely her sons had powers.

Ultra is kinda like how Division was in the recently-concluded Nikita. According to the backstory we were given so far, Ultra was established with good intentions but somehow along the way, Jedekiah (the male Amanda) and the Founder (a younger and sexier version of Percy) corrupted the organization and twisted the vision Stephen's father had in mind, leading to what it has now become. As it turns out, it wasn't a shadow war between species as the show initially wants us to believe, but more of a struggle for power, control, and dominance.

I just knew mamma was lying about something I just didn't know what exactly and boy was I shocked!!! That ending was the best I thought she died.. So was that Luca that was doing that stuff last week and this week with the fork??

@ nate

I dont think so I mean wouldn't Stephen know if his mind was being read?

I KNEW Mom was a tomorrow people. The way she kept looking at Stephen, like she knew what he was thinking. I dislike Cara as boss and hope John picks up the reigns soon.
