Grey's Anatomy Review: All About Cristina

by at .  Updated at . Comments

It's hard to imagine Grey's Anatomy without the one and only Cristina Yang. Soon enough, though, we'll have to do just that.

Let's forget about that momentarily, however, and dive right in and discuss tonight's Cristina-centric installment.

Two Paths
With two paths in front of her, Cristina must decide which to choose.

On Grey's Anatomy Season 10 Episode 17, Cristina saved the life of a man who ultimately chose to die. Repeatedly, she asked the patient and even herself: Do you know who you are? Do you know what's happened to you? Do you want to live this way?

These are simple but also interesting questions that honestly made me stop to wonder about my own life. I love when Shonda and company can do that. I know for days to come I, too, will be addressing the same concerns and pondering my own choices in life.

Cristina had a decision to make about the path she wanted to take moving forward and whether it should be with or without Owen.

In the first scenario, when she questions the patient, he chose to die. We saw Crowen move in together, adopt a dog and even become parents. Seriously, how strange was it seeing Cristina pregnant? Twice, for that matter?! In the end, she was seen presenting a Harper Avery Award to Ross. Crazy!

In the second scenario, the patient chose to live. The main difference this time was that Cristina knew she and Owen could not be together. Their differences were just too big and they were always fighting about the same things, so she asked Meredith to help her stay away from Owen.

While he developed a drinking problem, we saw Cristina accept her fourth Harper Avery Award in a row.

Finally, in Cristina's last sliding door experience, we saw her simply just watch Owen walk alone into an elevator. I can't say that I'm entirely sure what her final decision was but I hope she figures it out ASAP. Her days are limited and I want to see her being her rock star self in the OR.

By the way, I kind of loved that we got to see so much of Meredith even if this was all about Cristina. Life with your best friend by your side just make things a bit more bearable.

Other Thoughts:

  • Cristina named her male dog Mrs. Rodriguez. Hilarious!
  • I seriously liked all of the details, such as the doctors' scrubs, their fancy bracelets, Meredith's futuristic phone, the docs' aging and much more details that were shown to illustrate passing time.
  • Next season, we will certainly be missing Cristina. Will you also be missing Ross and Leah?
  • Be sure to return next week to chime in on the Grey's Anatomy Round Table

Overall, "Do You Know?" was very different and showed Cristina at her best and worst. Of course, Sandra Oh rocked every scene and I was reminded constantly that things just aren't going to be the same without her.

So, should Crowen end up together?

I understood this episode perfectly, for me it was great given the fakt that this character will be leaving, this was the needed explanation for this. And I thing somethimes a relationship can go only two ways, and they were portraied perfectly. They are strong people who can make the compromise for the other but will never be OK with it in the long run. Either way only one of them will receive the future he wants and the other will go crazy. Their relationship is too passionete, they are always all over each other but they can never be thogether for good without destroing each other. So the only way was for her to not open her mouth and let him go in the elevator.

that was a great episode, well written, I can understand why people didn't feel it, but I thought was a realistic portrayal of Yang.

I can´t believe there are so many negative comments here. I found this episode brilliant ! Makes one think about his own life. Characters are great and the writing also. No predictable cliche. I´d call it a destroying love. And I´m glad we didn´t clearly see what her final choice was, have to leave something for the next episodes. I knew that would be the outcome of the third version, I really liked it. And in the third part, she saved Jackson´s hand, I loved this detail !. I feel so sorry for them. They are meant to be together, but can never be happy together. I´m wondering if that kind of love really exists. I can imagine that Owen would give up having a child, but I can never imagine Christina having kids.
It wasn´t boring at all. Grey´s Anatomy is great as always.

I forgot: Even more stupid in 8x13 they made VERY clear that Yang wd be unhappy without Owen and him married to someone else with kids wd be unhappy too without her. Who are you kidding Rhimes????

Avatar

Stupid epi. It didnt solve anything as they did not interact ONCE in reality. Stupid also bc SR preached since S5 that they are meant to be and soulmates and blabla and now suddenly they make each other miserable? How convenient. How boring. Inconsistent writing. Great disservice to Hunts character. So he becomes an alcoholic bc he cant have the glorious Yang. If Sandra Oh was not leaving they wd end up together. Thats the truth. They wd end up together. Hunt wd give up kids and basta. Yang wd never leave Hunt. And Hunt wd never prefer kids to Yang. As a true shipper i feel laughed in my face and betrayed. I invested so much time in this show and now i have to watch these silly plots and both acting out of character. I have no words to express how let down i feel by the creaters and esp. by SR. There wd have been ways to keep them together. Oh expressed more than once she was willing to guest star. but it wd require smart writing. something that completely got lost in S7. No surprise a great actress like Oh is leaving that crap. Now I only need to find out why such a remarkable actor like McKidd is staying. heartbroken and bummed. my passionate loving Crowen. Best chemistry ever.

@ Nina

well said!! I can't agree more!!

I did not like this last episode of GA. It moved too fast for me and at times was confusing. I'm glad there isn't more scenes between Alex and Jo, I don't like them together, for me they lack chemistry. Alex is taking up space, except for those scenes between him and his dad, he has no story line and she is worthless. What is her story line? Cris and Owen are ok but they need to get their act together. I hope Burke livens things up on Greys. It needs a boost of something. Maybe the writers are getting tired, they need some new material.

@ LINDA

I agree with the moving too fast. It was quite confusing at times and I think it had to do with the rather strange editing. Did Chandra Wilson direct this? i read she recently directed an ep. again but was it this one? Because the pace reminds me of the other ep. she directed, the one about the tumour.

Terrible episode. In every scenario I felt like Cristina was being extremely selfish. By the end of the episode, I didn't care as much about her leaving the show.

I think we had a short version of possible Crowen SLs if SO had continued to be in GA. Unlike Mer's alternate reality where she and Der ended up back together where they belonged together, Crowen's seemed to be a disaster for either Cris or Owen depending on Cris' choice. Not good. I could see Cris walking away with Burke because she knows she can't stay and see Owen not cope without her.
I'm struggling to really enjoy S10, it's OK, but it doesn't have the impact from the first two seasons anymore

I didn't care for the episode much and found it somewhat confusing. Still, I like Owen and Cristina together and always have. While Cristina has always been clear that she does not want to have children and that her priority is being a surgeon, Owen has been more changable. With Emma, he could have had everything he thought he wanted, but he realized that he it wasn't what he really wants. He says he wants Cristina—just as she is. The options for the future suggest that she has to change to keep him because he never gets what he wants in their relationship, it's never enough. It's likely that Owen's wish to be a parent will arise again—likely in that people have periods of regret about what they've given up—but it's clear that it won't be a reality in a life with Cristina.
