Crisis Review: Hostage or Kidnapper?

by at .  Updated at . Comments

What does Gibson want?

He does everything he can to convince himself that the ends will justify his means. However, what his actual end game is remains a secret. There have been a few minor wrinkles in his plan, but so far it's gone amazingly well.

The biggest threats to him became apparent on Crisis Season 1 Episode 5. His guard, Koz, has began to act out on his own with the kids and the student who almost died knows Gibson's involved. Oops!

This was my least favorite episode of the series so far. It was uncomfortable to watch during several scenes. Koz has unhealthy fixation on Amber, but his motivations aren't clear. Since he's wearing a mask, there aren't any facial expressions to help decipher whether he's acting out of anger, lust or something else.

Gibson has given Koz too much room to interact with the kids and he's psychologically harming them. Gibson has done everything he can to provide a safe environment for the students, so he'd likely be furious to find out what's been happening. As the kids further deteriorate, they will become a bigger threat to Gibson and to themselves.

Gibson's a master of his plan, but it comes with consequences. The students' welfare are in his hands and so is his own family and marriage. He threatened what he cherishes most in order to get the soldiers. He knew his wife would go through with poisoning their friend and CIA Director Widener, but believed the CIA man wouldn't drink the coffee.

Gibson took care with his wife that he didn't with the other parents. The poison was fake even if Widener did drink it. I wasn't sure if her actual instructions included keeping Widener in the house or if she just sought comfort in the man's arms. From Gibson's reaction, it seemed like it was the former.

He knew Widener had eyes for his wife and didn't like it, but didn't blame her for getting close to Widener. At the same time, how much does the CIA Director know? He has to suspect that Gibson's involved in the kidnapping right? And, that he could have been watching the two of them? Maybe I give him too much credit, I'm not sure.

Regardless, Gibson got what he needed from the Director and was able to take the soldiers from the CIA. All of this was done to get the soldiers in his possession. They are key to Gibson's end game, though they remain mostly a mystery to us. We did find out that the video wasn't from a mission, instead it was from their training exercise.

Did those people really die during training? That's brutal. And, what was their actual mission in Washington, D.C.? Is Operation Lennox still a go? If it is and Gibson stops it, then he may be seen as a hero when this is all done and over. Of course, that only happens if he's not tied to the kidnapping. With the student overhearing Gibson's orders and the FBI finding the photo of Gibson with the soldiers, it's more unlikely.

So much has happened in the first five episodes of Crisis season 1, I'm not even sure where it goes from here. The FBI is now investigating the kidnapping and an unknown conspiracy. Which one is actually more pressing at this time? Plus, Meg is somehow involved in all of this, but she's keeping quiet for now.

With the soldiers in Gibson's possession, it will be interesting to see if the CIA turns to the FBI for help or not. There are three players involved right now and they all have conflicting goals. The FBI's intentions appear to be righteous at this point with Gibson working to find the truth and the CIA wanting to stop that at any cost.

At least Dunn and Finley are finally asking the right question: "So is Gibson the hostage? Or the kidnapper?"

Who is in more danger?
