Grey's Anatomy Review: Difficulty Juggling

by at .  Updated at . Comments

Wait a second... did that really just happen?!?

Grey's Anatomy Season 10 Episode 20 was kind of a huge letdown! Seriously, how could Dr. Cristina Yang not win the Harper Avery Award?!

An Apprehensive Crew
It's hard to tell what everyone is thinking as they listen to Derek talk to their most recent patient in "Go It Alone"

I am hugely disappointed and feel like the entire installment and recent Cristina-centric episodes were built around what was supposed to be a defining moment for Cristina.

Nonetheless, I can't help but wonder if tonight's dissatisfying ending has anything to do with the writers' farewell for the one and only Dr. Yang. Could this frustrating and disheartening sense of defeat be the reason behind her leaving GSMH?

At this point, I can only hope that Shonda and company know what they're doing and are going to send off Cristina in an epic way. Call me a pessimist, but I'm not holding my breath.

On another note, I also can't help but wonder what next season will look like without the unforgettable Sandra Oh. Change is coming, and it's coming fast. Also, please let there be more scenes with Meredith, Cristina and Alex.

Side note: I was so glad that both Owen and Meredith were there to support Cristina. Regardless of the outcome, she had the two people that she needed the most.

Back at the hospital, nearly everyone was having trouble with juggling their responsibilities.

Derek was feeling entirely overwhelmed as he was canceling lectures, pushing surgeries and also focused on his project with the POTUS. However, McDreamy stepped up his game and involved the residents in some very cool surgeries (one of which, Leah totally messes up on).

By the way, someone please tell Meredith and Derek that they should look into hiring a temporary nanny.

It's a good thing Calzona was there to babysit Zola (who has been MIA) and Bailey. Unfortunately, Calzona had to cancel their date night plans and nearly relied on a coin toss to figure out who would carry their baby. I like where Calzona's storyline is heading and it will be fun to see Callie pregnant again.

Alex, acting basically as a double agent, was also struggling with juggling his days at the private practice and nights at the hospital. While Jolex again had some cute moments together, I actually would like to see Alex do his thing at the practice.

As for Japril, the two spent the entire episode arguing about how they will raise their children when it comes to faith. Ultimately, Jackson admitted he did respect her but has faith only in science. April said she felt sorry for him and pitied him while eventually ending up on Calzona's doorstep asking for a place to stay.

Meanwhile, it was nice to see Bailey excited again about her project as she worked on the bubble boy case. Elsewhere, things aren't going so well with the family with the heart issues. All three children are now on the transplant list as their bodies are rejecting their hearts. Moreover, I think some of you may be right - this case could be the reason for Dr. Preston Burke's return.

Other Thoughts:

  • I couldn't help but giggle when Cristina realized she didn't want April's help with writing her speech.
  • Ben finally made an appearance but spent most of the episode snoozing. Also, I laughed every time when Jo called him "Gramps."
  • It's hard to believe that less than a handful of Grey's Anatomy episodes remaining this season. How did that happen?!
  • Be sure to return next week to check out our Grey's Anatomy Round Table.

All in all, "Go It Alone" wasn't all that bad until the final minute. I'm very interested in seeing what happens next as Cristina's chapter is coming to an end.

Were you surprised Cristina didn't win the Harper Avery Award?

Here is your first look at Grey's Anatomy Season 10 Episode 21. Are you ready to say farewell to Cristina?

I'm sorry...I thought this was a comment section about the show?! I apologize that I have an opinion and am free to express that. I certainly wasn't trying to make anyone else feel the same way - as I stated, it felt nice to vent a little. I'm sincerely thrilled for those who absolutely love the show at ALL times - good for you. But last time I checked, it's okay for someone to feel differently. I've watched Grey's since the pilot and have consistently loved every season except this latest one. Sue me! If you love the show so much then why do you give a damn if someone may or may not feel the same way? There's no reason that my "complaining and whining" should affect someone else, especially considering it was just one little post. I'm not judging anyone for still loving it - please offer me the same courtesy. Thank you! :)

I think Cris will look for alternatives to get her the HA elsewhere. There has to be a reason for her to leave the hospital that she is a part owner of.
The answer to Der's problem will be his sister moving to Seattle. I wouldn't be surprised if GA sees another neuro surgeon in the cast.
I agree with the wish for plenty of MerCris Alex scenes. I will miss that so much!
Kepvery hitting problems so quickly when they should be in their honeymoon phase. Will the writers go as far as anulling the marriage, I wonder.
The solution to Der's being over stretched is having his sister take over some of his case load. I'm half expecting Amy to be in S11.

How about all of you, who keep saying Grey's has had its day, just rack off and let the rest of us who still love this show with all our hearts enjoy it for as long as we can without you poo pooing it!

@ Melissa

Yes! Thank you Melissa for saying this. I am so sick of all the complainers and whiners on here. If they don't like just stop watching. I think that the new characters and stories are AWESOME and THE BEST SEASONS OF GREYS ARE 9 AND 10!!! #JOLEX

I liked the episode..gramps!!!hahahaha...love Ben! I though it was a solid episode...altough I cannot believe that after so many seasons Grey's still has so many people watching the show!
Kudos to Shonda! I will miss Cristina...she is the best, from day 1

With the return of preston bruke, I have the feeling that he is going to have a relationship with the heart broken stephanie.

@ Ufuoma

Wouldn't he be considerably older than she is? That might look strange, at least on the show, Have they done an "age difference" angle since Lexie and Mark?

I'm an AVID Grey's Anatomy fan (since the pilot) but honestly, IMO...the show has run its course. For me, this 10th season is by far the worst season yet. And with Sandra leaving (Cristina being a fave of mine), I just think it's time to wrap up this once great show. I'll stick around and keep watching...but if the future eps are anything like this season, then I might just wait to watch until they air on netflix or even wait till the DVDs come out. I feel like this season had great potential but the writers failed miserably. I'm someone who likes to see character/storyline development and growth. As a Callie/Arizona fan, I love that they're together again and seemingly happy (at least at the moment)...but all of those stupid timelines pissed me off. I wanted to see Arizona going to therapy and actually working on herself and her problems. Instead we got her being a slut and hooking up with/cheating with the WORST intern/resident/character EVER on the show. I wanted to see Callie and Arizona talking and rebuilding their beautiful relationship - not just a time jump to them being together again. The same with Jackson and April. As thrilled as I am with them being together and even married...I felt jipped out of a freakin "real" wedding between them. And, in my honest opinion, they were/are way too immature to be married. The girl was engaged/in love with Matthew (I do believe it was sincere) and on her wedding night to him...she marries Jackson instead. I was wanting her to leave Matthew (even though I adore him) for Jackson, but I also wanted to see them build their relationship. They still have A LOT to learn about marriage which is clear since they got married. And Leah...the girl has gotto GO! Her characte is nothing but obsessive, stalkerish, selfish, whiny, pathetic...I could go on and on but I'll restrain myself. She is way too immature to be in a relationship. First, it was her pining over Alex which was just sad (not in a good/sympathetic way). Then, she starts hooking up with Arizona and had the audacity to try to cry victim. I was no Arizona fan around this time, but she wasn't completely at fault. Leah KNEW Arizona was still married. That's on her. I have zero sympathy for women (girls in Leah's case) who are the "other woman" and know it...and do so willingly. She just comes off as this desperate, clingy girl who wants anyone and everyone; she's like those pathetic girls who are ridiculously desperate to find love. It's not just the Arizona/Alex situations either. Ive hated this character since the very beginning of her arrival. She was the one intern/resident I never warmed up to or found anything redeeming or worthwhile about. I feel bad for the actress (who I think is talented) when I say this...but I wish this Leah character would just go away or get killed off or something. I can't stand her! And what's with the stupid '80s cover band songs?! They're terrible. I love the real songs as I'm an '80s girl at heart and in spirit...but these remakes or whatever just suck. Please go back to the REAL tracks. Thus whole post makes me sound so pessimistic...and I am which makes me very sad, because I've never really felt this way about Grey's before. Sure, there's been storylines/characters/scenes/episodes I haven't liked over the years but overall...I've always felt positive about this show. But after this season...well, I'm ready for GA to end which is something I never thought I'd say. Oh yeah...where are the freaking Meredith, Cristina, and Alex scenes?! This is their last season together - I want more scenes between these three. This latest episode was pretty good with them, though, so I'm trying to remain optimistic that they'll be even more in these final episodes. Also...can't wait for a certain someone to return! Anyway...sorry for the long post. This is the first time in months that I've been able to vent. And the sad thing is, there's more I could vent about regarding Grey's Anatomy, but I'm holding back.

Okay, Grey's Anatomy has GOT to stop playing bad retreads of '80s songs!

@ Gaudior

Definitely! Those songs were made to be upbeat for a *reason*!

I think we forget that it is a honor to just be nominated. Christina Yang is a star but we forget she is a young star amongst her fellow brethren. She will get it next time. She is still a cardiac fellow and essentially a student in some of her colleagues eyes. I worry for Derek and Meredith. Their refusal to acknowledge that they need routine help is disturbing to say the least. Their children need a normal routine. Sure many people make it work with juggling and daycare but those who use family and nannies do and should. They want to be there for their children, surgeries and research without help. WTF, Shondaland is truly dropping the ball on this one. Now, I know I am watching fantasy TV. Most doctors or scientists would have at least a 2 man team for research assistance. I won't even talk about the ridiculousness of Derek's project for the NIH without any research assistants at all.
Shondaland is missing a great opportunity to show research as it is truly done with the extremely large scale physician scientist community that works in tandem with other specialties such as virology and bioengineeng to bring ONE project into fruition. I wouldn't mention at all if all the doctors were not involved in these ludicrous projects that they could never do by themselves including Bailey and her Viral Delivery System. Even Iron Man had J.A.R.V.I.S. to help him out. Some of you may not get that. Point is give them some help, they are not SUPER, their human.

I thought it was both strange and sad that Mer and Der didn't even *think* about a nanny. With all the talk about sending laundry off (you can do that? With more than just dry cleaning?), you'd think paid child care would come up at least once! And it's not like they can't afford it! I've done the swimsuit-as-clean-underwear thing too. If you've been to college, who *hasn't* done that?
