Scandal Review: False Alarm

by at .  Updated at . Comments

My reaction after finishing Scandal Season 3 Episode 17 can be summed up in three words:

What. Just. Happened?

Clearly, I know what I just saw but my mouth is hanging open at the fact that we have ONE episode to go and everything just got (more) awesome on Scandal. And by more awesome I, of course, mean more crazy.

You guys, Cyrus Beene will stop at NOTHING to squash Sally Langston.

Cyrus Beene, to stop Sally Langston from being elected, will blow up an entire church full of innocent people just to make sure the woman dies. But Sally and Leo did try to determine whether Jerry Jr. is Fitz' son by getting a private school co-ed to sleep with him for a DNA sample. Leo at least might deserve it.

But after this, if Fitz wins, because who else could run against him, it effectively means Fitz won't win the election on his own merit.

It's also pretty convenient for Team Grant that Andrew Nichols is in the church for the Senator's funeral, too, because with him out of the way, Mellie can be put back in her cage.

Or can she?

I have to say, there's a part of me that seriously wants to hate on Cyrus for what he's about to do, but there's another part of me that positively reveled in watching him practically skip down the White House halls, a smirk on his face the whole way. I don't love that he's a political animal so concerned with staying in the White House that he'll go to this extreme, but Jeff Perry plays evil genius like no other.

He joins Huck and Quinn this episode as the only three people who have anything to be happy about. That midday romp on the hood of the car in broad daylight between Huckleberryquinn put a little more pep in their step. And it put a crick in my neck from the way I had to tilt my head to the side to watch that go down.

It also allowed Maya Pope to walk right into OPA and stab/shoot/injure Papa Pope, but hey, spies need love, too, right?

Seriously, I can't decide if I'm grossed out by Huck and Quinn together or if I find it oddly fascinating and sort of weirdly hot to see. It's so...bizarre in a way that makes sense. I'm going to need to see this one play out. Maybe a few more random hookups will tell me if this is a thing that should continue. At least until Charlie finds out and Quinn is forced to choose.

And those weren't even the most interesting and important parts of the night.

After dismantling B613, Olivia earned herself a visit from the President, Cyrus Beene, Jake Ballard, and Papa Pope. It was mighty crowded in her conference room with all the men in her life wondering what the hell she'd been thinking when she'd tried to save every single one of them. (Except Cyrus. Cyrus didn't need--or want--saving.)

Perhaps B613 wasn't such a bad gig after all as allowing them to continue to operate would have stopped the bomb threat before it ever really got off the ground. While the men can't yell at Olivia for trying to pull them all back into the light, she couldn't really see the bigger picture of what B613 did.

They weren't just a group of super spies hellbent on destroying their operatives' lives by making them do things no human should ever have to do in the name of saving the country. Destroyed lives was just sort of a by-product. Collateral damage, if you will, of saving the Republic week after week and going unthanked and unrecognized for their efforts.

(For the record, I'm not saying what B613 did was right or okay or good. Just that they did what they did and Olivia couldn't know how many missions she might have been compromising when she flipped that switch. It wasn't a smart plan.)

Jake, perhaps because he's the new Command, was able to tell Olivia things about her father and the way he would treat her that only he would know because it's how he was taught. Rowan will always, first and foremost, look after Rowan.

Olivia should have known that when her father shot a man in cold blood practically in front of her. She took a gamble that her mother wouldn't blow her up in Ohio, a huge gamble considering the man her father shot had been her mother's lover. A lover Maya Pope willingly let die because he had been compromised or was no longer useful to her.

And then she walked into Olivia's office like she owns the place and somehow managed to put Rowan Pope in critical condition.

Maya Pope is stone cold.

The Jake-Olivia-Fitz thing is just tired. It's weary right now. Jake is calling her out on the things he knows she feels and he's making her examine herself and that's not a bad thing. But then all Fitz has to say is "I miss you" and she's practically eating out of his hands. It's maddening!

It's going to be interesting to see how Fitz will react when the truth about Big Jerry's raping Mellie and Jerry Jr's DNA tests come out, and it feels like they will at some point. If Mellie's allowed to sweep everything under the rug and continue to pretend like it never happened then the last 15 years will be moot no matter what.

Mellie needs to tell someone the truth, whether that's Olivia or Fitz or a therapist. She acknowledged that Big Jerry had been her cross to bear, but whether Olivia put it together that Mellie meant he raped her or she's just thinking the two had consensual sex is probably a plot point for future episodes, either next week's or in the following season.

Poor Harrison being held at gunpoint my Adnan Salif. Poor, poor, Harrison.

Next week is the Scandal season finale. Season 3 was intentionally cut short to accommodate Kerry Washington's real-life pregnancy, which is terrible for us Scandal fans but a really great thinking for the mom to be. We love you, Kerry, even if you guys are going to make us wait an extra long time before we get new episodes.

What did you think of Scandal Season 3 Episode 17? Are Huck and Quinn the weirdest couple you've ever seen? On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the worst, how bad a person is Cyrus Beene?

Oh yeah, don't know why everybody hates Quinn. Olivia destroyed her life!!!! Is everybody forgetting that? I think Quinn is doing what she has to do to get herself together. Quinn, tear Huck up, girl!! Just watch out for Charlie; he's a damn fool.

What's so weird about Huck and Quinn? Is it because they're not your garden variety couple? So they're freaks!!!! And??? Their love scenes are hot and juicy and kinky. Huck has a dark side and he tweaked Quinn's when he trained her. Frankly I'm bored with Olitz; they're a broken record. Jake, she don't love you, Fool!!!! Charlie where did you disappear to? I think that Quinn definitely has the upper hand with Huck, and when Charlie finds out he'll be no match for Huck.

Found this on tumblr...TRUTH! when people of color become main characters, fandom rushes in to coo over white side characters because wow they are so much more interesting… (charlotte in the prince and the frog, stiles in teen wolf) when people of color become romantic interests or are considered shippable by any facet of fandom, the rest of fandom shuts that down real quick because its not realistic (like with abbie from sleepy hollow), characterization clashes suddenly matter (tvd’s bonnie bennett or true blood’s tara thorton), or fandom is certain the character is more empowered foregoing romance entirely (mako mori from pacific rim.) when people of color become villains? shit. don’t even try it. because fandom couldn’t sympathize with a black or brown characters tragic back story to make even their most ridiculous crackships come true.

I thought you couldn´t kill an original :-P

My favorite moments:
1. Huck throwing Mama Pope's ex on the floor and saying he's heavy :) Huck is the best! Quinn and his new boyfriend did nothing.
2. Jake letting everyone know that Olivia slept with him to get information. I like Olivia but this game of hers is not a nice one. She's sleeping with Fits, and Jake and that's not fair.

I just loved Olivia and Fitz in this episode. I've never seen two actors with so much chemistry who don't even have to be in the same room together. Olitz phones are always EPIC! This site is definitely in the minority, but fans still are rooting for Fitz and Liv. Also, loved how Liv brought up Big Jerry death. She knows Fitz better than Mellie could ever dream of knowing him. She knows he tries never to be like his dad. It is sore spot for him and Loved how she reminded him that he is better than his POS dad. Rowan isn't as bad as BJ, but still Liv can relate. Jake is such a salty jealous fool. He was dead wrong about Rowan. Rowan is many things, but he loves his daughter and Rowan was BOSS this episode. Love the shade Rowan gave that little prick Jake. Rowan and Fitz were both BOSS! Jake on the other hand has to remind himself and everybody HE's command. Who's doing a crappy job. lol. Quinn is better suited to lead than Jake. Oh, the best part Liv admitting loving Fitz to Jake. I mean dude, you will always be second fiddle. Buy a clue. Liv has used him for two seasons and he still hangs around like some idiot begging for crumbs. A grown ass man begging to be saved. Pathetic is Jake. lol. Mellie is a piece of work blaming Liv and blaming Fitz for something Big Jerry did to her. Maybe Mellie and Jake should hook up. Both play victim so well. I did love the Fitz, Mellie, and Liv scene...Fitz..."I'm a bad boy"...Liv..."Don't be cute"...Mellie.."Can't we just die already so I don't have to listen to you two". LOL! Second best scene of the night. So...just thought I'll add some Fitz and Olitz love to all the irrational hate by Miranda every week. One thing I love about Fitz, he gets blame for others actions on this show, but he still always try to do the right thing. He's not perfect, but he knows how to apologize when he's wrong. I believe Shonda said in the writers room...Fitz is the most powerful but yet the most powerless because all the vultures around him. I think if it was up to him, he wouldn't be President and move to Vermont and be with Liv. But the first election was rigged and now he wants to prove that he can win on his own. Love Tony Goldwyn, Joe Morton, Khandi Alexander, and Kerry Washington in this episode.

@ Art

@Art, thank you for a beautiful post. I agree with EVERY single thing you said. People are so wrong about Fitz and they swoon over Jake but I still love Fitz. I agree with everything you said about everybody in you post. Great comments.

@ Art

See, I don´t like Olivia/Fitz as a couple, they are unhealthy for each other, their relationship is toxic. At the beginning I could buy their story, but now?! Years have gone by, he´s still married, has another child (by Olivia´s suggestion, God sake) and are still drawn to each other?! No way, I´d never want that for everytime their are together on the screen I just fast forwar!

@ Art

Love this!
Just read a comment...Liv doesn't deserve Jake. This is true. She doesn't deserve a violent abusive CHOKER who gave her a concussion and made a sex tape of her and watched repeatedly likea pervert...I'll take the married sexy adulter also Liv. At least he truly loves you... Everything on Scandal is either Fitz or Liv fault to the haters. Jake can kill 3 people in one night and if Fitz yells at Liv or Mellie, some like Miranda thinks he should get the death penalty. Too bad Rowan hates Fitz. Probably because of his hate for Dominic Bell...It explains a lot...and he'll probably die. I will mis Rowan. Love Olitz scenes...they are the best part of the show.

@ Cena Gomez

Thanks Cena. I don't hate Jake but I don't get the Fitz haters either. Jake killed James in cold blood but it seems to fans he can do no wrong. I feel it's Scott Foley the actor they love and they're dealing with the actor and not the person in the show and his deeds. I love my Fitzy.

WTF!? #ScandalABC is killing me! So damn crazy I'm a gonna need that ambulance for Papa Pope. Killer show killer lines killer Chief of Staff

OH.MY.GOSH !!!! That was my reaction when I finished watching the episode. I am still panting coz this took my breath away ! That was waaaay better than last weeks episode !
My mind was just blown away. Cyrus is so evil (not surprising) that the lengths he is willing to go through have no boundaries ! Fitz wanted to win on his own, well guess what, it still ain't happening !
HuckleberryQuinn is definitely weird. I get what you mean about not knowing if you are disgusted or just intrigued by how weird they are.
Mellie's scene with Olivia was so intense, I loved it. I don't think she meant to let the Big Jerry thing escape, but I do believe that Olivia figured it out. Now Leo trying to get the test results was plain wrong.
Mama Pope is cold as ice ! DAMN ! The woman just walked like she owned the place. Now how Popa Poe ended up bleeding on the floor is a total mystery.
Him killing Dominic the way he did was no surprise. To be fair, we have never seen him get his hands dirty (ie, killing people). But he really loved Maya... The man held that grudge for YEARS !
Mamma Pope don't love nobody. That was a big gamble, sending Olivia to Ohio.
Harrison is very unlucky. Adnan got his balls I think. He needs to get them back. If it means killing her, so be it ! She's gotta go !
The whole Fitz/Olivia thing was plain boring. I don't even care anymore. Now all the men in her life, in the same room was just wow. So much going on. Shutting down B613 was so dumb. At the end of last episode, I laughed. That was way too easy. B613 operates on many levels. How many things were compromised, how many lives ! Nah, Jake was so right.
Next week is going to kill me ! Just watched the trailer. Oh boy !
Btw, noticed Quinn had the same maple syrup as I do. 1st time i've seen it tv. live in the UK lol

Loved last night's episode - it was very, very exciting with the exception of the Fitz and Liz’s conversation. I fast forwarded past that tired dialogue. Now on the other hand, I enjoyed Jake putting Liz on blast in front of everyone including Fritz. He let them know he was fully aware that Liz slept with him to get data to bring down B613. Dumb move, but that allowed for all of the resulting drama that we love on Scandal.
How many more times do you think Jake is going to warn David to follow directions? I think the White Hat David wears is going to cost him his life.
I had a feeling that something more was going to happen between Huck and Quinn when I saw the excited look on her face when Huck brought in Mama Pope’s boyfriend. The competitive banter between Charlie and Huck was interesting. Quinn & Huck are the weirdest couple ever. Charlie is going to find out she’s cheating and then………
Mama Pope is one bad lady. How did she injure Papa Pope? I presume that was retaliation for Papa Pope killing her boyfriend.
Lastly, Cyrus, Cyrus, Cyrus. I cannot believe the lengths he will go to for power. If Fitz was upset about Defiance, he’s going to be nothing short of livid about innocent people being killed to get to Sally Langston. Although, I have to admit I have grown tired of that smug expression on her face. What a hypocrite – she killed her husband.
I can’t wait for next week’s finality – and then I will be longing for the new Season.
