Scandal Review: False Alarm

by at .  Updated at . Comments

My reaction after finishing Scandal Season 3 Episode 17 can be summed up in three words:

What. Just. Happened?

Clearly, I know what I just saw but my mouth is hanging open at the fact that we have ONE episode to go and everything just got (more) awesome on Scandal. And by more awesome I, of course, mean more crazy.

You guys, Cyrus Beene will stop at NOTHING to squash Sally Langston.

Cyrus Beene, to stop Sally Langston from being elected, will blow up an entire church full of innocent people just to make sure the woman dies. But Sally and Leo did try to determine whether Jerry Jr. is Fitz' son by getting a private school co-ed to sleep with him for a DNA sample. Leo at least might deserve it.

But after this, if Fitz wins, because who else could run against him, it effectively means Fitz won't win the election on his own merit.

Again.

It's also pretty convenient for Team Grant that Andrew Nichols is in the church for the Senator's funeral, too, because with him out of the way, Mellie can be put back in her cage.

Or can she?

I have to say, there's a part of me that seriously wants to hate on Cyrus for what he's about to do, but there's another part of me that positively reveled in watching him practically skip down the White House halls, a smirk on his face the whole way. I don't love that he's a political animal so concerned with staying in the White House that he'll go to this extreme, but Jeff Perry plays evil genius like no other.

He joins Huck and Quinn this episode as the only three people who have anything to be happy about. That midday romp on the hood of the car in broad daylight between Huckleberryquinn put a little more pep in their step. And it put a crick in my neck from the way I had to tilt my head to the side to watch that go down.

It also allowed Maya Pope to walk right into OPA and stab/shoot/injure Papa Pope, but hey, spies need love, too, right?

Seriously, I can't decide if I'm grossed out by Huck and Quinn together or if I find it oddly fascinating and sort of weirdly hot to see. It's so...bizarre in a way that makes sense. I'm going to need to see this one play out. Maybe a few more random hookups will tell me if this is a thing that should continue. At least until Charlie finds out and Quinn is forced to choose.

And those weren't even the most interesting and important parts of the night.

After dismantling B613, Olivia earned herself a visit from the President, Cyrus Beene, Jake Ballard, and Papa Pope. It was mighty crowded in her conference room with all the men in her life wondering what the hell she'd been thinking when she'd tried to save every single one of them. (Except Cyrus. Cyrus didn't need--or want--saving.)

Perhaps B613 wasn't such a bad gig after all as allowing them to continue to operate would have stopped the bomb threat before it ever really got off the ground. While the men can't yell at Olivia for trying to pull them all back into the light, she couldn't really see the bigger picture of what B613 did.

They weren't just a group of super spies hellbent on destroying their operatives' lives by making them do things no human should ever have to do in the name of saving the country. Destroyed lives was just sort of a by-product. Collateral damage, if you will, of saving the Republic week after week and going unthanked and unrecognized for their efforts.

(For the record, I'm not saying what B613 did was right or okay or good. Just that they did what they did and Olivia couldn't know how many missions she might have been compromising when she flipped that switch. It wasn't a smart plan.)

Jake, perhaps because he's the new Command, was able to tell Olivia things about her father and the way he would treat her that only he would know because it's how he was taught. Rowan will always, first and foremost, look after Rowan.

Olivia should have known that when her father shot a man in cold blood practically in front of her. She took a gamble that her mother wouldn't blow her up in Ohio, a huge gamble considering the man her father shot had been her mother's lover. A lover Maya Pope willingly let die because he had been compromised or was no longer useful to her.

And then she walked into Olivia's office like she owns the place and somehow managed to put Rowan Pope in critical condition.

Maya Pope is stone cold.

The Jake-Olivia-Fitz thing is just tired. It's weary right now. Jake is calling her out on the things he knows she feels and he's making her examine herself and that's not a bad thing. But then all Fitz has to say is "I miss you" and she's practically eating out of his hands. It's maddening!

It's going to be interesting to see how Fitz will react when the truth about Big Jerry's raping Mellie and Jerry Jr's DNA tests come out, and it feels like they will at some point. If Mellie's allowed to sweep everything under the rug and continue to pretend like it never happened then the last 15 years will be moot no matter what.

Mellie needs to tell someone the truth, whether that's Olivia or Fitz or a therapist. She acknowledged that Big Jerry had been her cross to bear, but whether Olivia put it together that Mellie meant he raped her or she's just thinking the two had consensual sex is probably a plot point for future episodes, either next week's or in the following season.

Poor Harrison being held at gunpoint my Adnan Salif. Poor, poor, Harrison.

Next week is the Scandal season finale. Season 3 was intentionally cut short to accommodate Kerry Washington's real-life pregnancy, which is terrible for us Scandal fans but a really great thinking for the mom to be. We love you, Kerry, even if you guys are going to make us wait an extra long time before we get new episodes.

What did you think of Scandal Season 3 Episode 17? Are Huck and Quinn the weirdest couple you've ever seen? On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the worst, how bad a person is Cyrus Beene?

I felt I was watching a Quentin Tarantino movie. I don't know if that was good or bad. Did they take it up a notch? Sure did. Olivia and all the king's men. She was surrounded. She did handle herself well but I could feel her crumbling under the weight of their perusing eyes. Sometimes it pays not to be wanted. Men like to handle things together, as many times they have asked for her help and she has saved their a-holes. They still think she doesn't get a vote on the island. You could practically feel them thinking "This here is men's folks business. Why don't you wait in the salon." If it wasn't for her office and her parents, they would have left her out of it. Speaking of her parents, I guess Mama Pope is faster with a knife. Seriously, do they not have security perimeter. I felt the whistling song from Kill Bill Vol. I Twisted Nerve, the one Darryl Hannah uses walking down the hospital aisle was quite applicable in many instances. Instance one, when Mama Pope broke into OPA and instance two when Cyrus Beane walked down the White House hallways to the Oval office. He might as well have done a merry jig. Hilarious. If you thought he was going to tell. THEN YOU HAVEN'T BEEN WATCHING. LOL. Huck and Quinn. Let's be real here. Its weird when Quinn plays the vamp it doesn't fit well. She's a NERD. Two, Huck is essentially a rain man with sociopath tendencies. I feel molested every time they touch each other. I wish they would STOP. Just STOP. Its not sexy. Its actually comedic. That's not the feeling they are going for with this story line. The question becomes who dies. If we are putting money on the table, Papa Pope 95%, Sally 90%, Jake 70%, Andrew 40%. Anyone want to take the bet?

Your comments about Huck and Quinn are right on and I can't STOP laughing.
My money is on Sally Langston, although that may be too obvious for it to be her.

@ Excited+Fan

1st I think that everyone really making Papa Pope into a very evil person. I have not one thought that he will harm his child now Mama Pope on the other hand is still debatable but I think Olivia is common ground for both of them that no matter what she will not get hurt or any of her friends because Harrison would've been dead. As for Huckleberryquinn thats weird and I think Charlie is definitely gonna try to kill them both when he finds out. I love the way Jake is with Olivia she can't handle him like she does Fitz. Fitz doesn't appreciate the women in his life so even tho it makes for steamy tv I want to see Liv and Mellie happy with other people. Either way Cyrus is a very evil nut job and he needs to be psychologically evaluated for mental stbility because how many lives is he going to take because of his need to be in the white house

I too love the way Jake just blast Liv - love it. Cyrus is the most evilest of all - and that's saying a lot for the characters on this show. Good job Perry.

If you saw any of the still photos released from the season finale, you'd see that somehow Andrew survives.

I've been marathoning this show for the past three weeks and really like it. I made myself stay away from reviews and spoilers but since I've now caught up with everybody else I really wanted to see what others thoughts were and share mine.
1) What did they do to Quinn!? For somebody marathoning the seasons there was a very quick jump cut from somewhat normal to full fledge obsession with B613. Maybe it felt differently watching it from week to week but it was annoyingly odd for myself. That and wanting her to be a support for Huck but turning into something completely odd.
2) Did he just SPIT on her and lick it off?! D:
3) I was cheering on Jake from the first scene he had with Olivia in the coffee shop. There's something about those two characters. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. Taking the info from Olivia's father about Jake killing James. I think the position of Command handed to him by Fitz is like the kiss of death. He couldn't and wouldn't have turned it down. 4) Poor Melly. I hated her. Then I hated her a little more but then her character just layered and layered to the point where all I can do is cheer her on. 5) I hate Fitz. Is that normal? I reeeeeally don't like him. The relationship between he and Olivia is just so toxic and borderline irritating.
6) Cyrus is one hell of a character. Just when I hate him - I love him again. Seriously though - the guy ordered the almost murder of his OWN HUSBAND and he just lost me after that. Then when James actually died (which was an episode that left me with tissues everywhere and a massive headache from crying) ...the love that was there between those two - I love him again. Now he's about to blow people up. What?! I love to hate the guy. I do. I could go on and on with thoughts but this comment is ridiculously long as it is. :)

I did a marathon of this show myself. Caught up to it at about episode 8. I KNOW how you feel. Olitz is so toxic it's plain wrong.
Cyrus... What a character. I know what you mean about hating to love him. Same goes for Mellie.

@ Me

Nice comment and only three weeks to catch up wow. Believe me if you explore the internet people hate Fitz so you are not the only one but I love Fitz flaws and all .

Avatar
@ Lauren

I didn't know the Internet is full of hate for Fitz. Gosh I love him, flaws and all as Lauren said. I'm sure Lauren and I are not the only one. I wish his supporters will come out and say so. I think the writers made Jake too liveable. Plus who in their right mind could really hate Scot Foley? It's not fair to Fitz. They picked an actor to play Jake that no one wants to hate. Lol.

@ Lauren

I know... three weeks. *hangs head in shame* but trust me there were many 2 am bed times and the use of a lot of under eye concealer followed by "you look tired" ... "yeah, stayed awake catching up on some work" BAHAHAHAHAHA :D

@ Me

You are not alone in hating Fitz. He is such a little man-boy, I can't stand it! As for Quinn, sometimes it does seem like it all happened so quickly but her life was turned upside down by Olivia and I think when she found out the truth about what happened to her and her boyfriend (fiance??), she was really never the same.

Avatar

Did you purposely forgot to mention the awkward moment between Rowan and Harrison? "Can I call you Papa Pope", was it meant to put confusion in our head that he could be his son? The look shared between Rowan, Harrison and olivia when she entered the room asking what's going on, tells me that there is more to this story than just a simple joke. Also didn't you notice that at the end Mellie was looking at the "fake" DNA results.

Avatar
@ marie

That scene with Harrison and Rowan was just hilarious ! The DNA test... I THINK that Jerry is Fitz's son... just a thought. Too much drama if he weren't. We have enough of it as it is !

Martinelli
@ Emy

I think Jerry is Fitz's father's son.

the lab said it was not a match. they paid to say it was.

Avatar
@ marie

Yes, but Olivia told Mellie that if she wanted, she could get a test done this time. Just thought this one was real instead of her having the fake one.

Cyrus is an evil human being, how can he justify killing all those people...I am sorry but his character is ruthless and beyond human at this point. Please kill off Quinn, I can't stand her character and her charades with Huck. Their makeout scene was disturning at the least. Olivia needs to check her self in to therapy ASAP, the girl is beyond repairable at this point. Poor Jake, go get yourself some other girl who will love you fully.

@ Theresa

If your mother was a terrorist, your father a cold blood murder, your boyfriends a married president and a comand of a super secret scary organization, how together do you think you would be?

Avatar
@ Theresa

I agree with you on that one. Olivia is broken. Jake needs to go find somebody else. That phone call was so... No words... Bad !

Avatar
@ Emy

Jake keeps trying and Liv doesn't deserve him. I see a Scarlett O'hara day coming for her if she doesn't wise up

Avatar
@ Excited+Fan

Blow the whole damn bunch of them up. Just leave Jake....and give him my phone number. I'll be waiting...forever!!

Avatar

i agree about quinn. i think her time is up

what just happened// 4m past few epiosde only last 5 minutes are mind blowing. i love to hate Cyrus beane

Avatar

Love Cyrus - he's become unhinged since James's death. Love, love, love him. And yes, we need rid of the dreadful cliche that Sally has become.

Avatar

Does anybody else have a feeling that Quinn is going to die in the season final. I bet Charlie is going to find about her and huck and hes going to kill her and try to kill huck
