The 2013-2014 television season is officially behind us.
Having already reviewed the best and worst of recent finales, it's now time to take a longer, more in-depth at the past few months of small screen action, specifically a handful of characters who captured our attention in unexpected ways.
The following men and women broke out in a big way this year, whether they were new to a series or simply given new material with which to shine.
Who exploded off the screen this season?
A vampire, a king, a clone, a superhero, a cop, a father and many more.
Did your favorite character break on through? Who did we miss? Who would you not have included as a surprise standout? Flip through the photos and sound off now.
The hot bad boy pirate with a heart of gold, he sold The Jolly Roger to get from the Enchanted Forest to NYC to find Emma. Now they're romantically linked and he lends support to Henry. "One of these days I'm going to stop chasing this woman." -- Hook
A hidden gem from Damon's past, this bloodthirsty lab rat became a fan favorite. Like a breath of fresh air, he brought charm, wit and forced everyone to think on their toes. "Break out the popcorn, Blondie. Elenaâs little sex romp isnât over yet." -- Enzo
Wit is the word with Ichy. A man out of time, he holds the key to stopping the Apocalypse and has incredible chemistry with his new partner. "Were you charged a fee for that water? My God it should be an inalienable right." -- Ichabod
He's commanding and sinister and Olivia Pope's father. Actor Joe Morton says he sees some of his own father in Rowan. Scandalous! "[to Olivia] You're skipping around in a field full of bombs and mistaking them for daisies." -- Rowan
While all the characters are funny, there's something about a big burly guy being scared of his job as a cop. He's lovable! "Terry: Can we please eat?! My body is starting to digest itself. Terry needs nutrients!" -- Terry
Taking the reins from a successful movie franchise, Madds Mikkelsen has created a fully fleshed man out of serial killer cannibal, Hannibal Lecter. We love him and love to hate him. "Psychopaths are not crazy. They are fully aware of what they do and the consequences of those actions." -- Hannibal
Laurel Lance lost the Canary fishnets to a sister she never had in the comics, but Sara became the Lance sister guys want and gals want to be. She kicks ass. "Love's the most powerful emotion and that makes it the most dangerous." -- Sara
Clone and twin 'sestra' of Sarah, Helena was frightening until we realized she just wants her sister to love her. Sure, she's still a killing machine, but her return from the dead was cause for celebration. "Itâs a miracle. We were meant to be together. Always. Sestra. I need your help. I was married. I think he took something from inside of me." -- Helena
With her unabashed affection for protagonist Piper, Crazy Eyes captured our hearts with her brutal honesty and sincerity. "I used to think you were a yellow dandelion, but you are all dried up with the puff blown off. But that's all right. You are who you are like I am who I am." -- Crazy Eyes
Red IS The Blacklist, thanks to a brilliant performance by James Spader. He's soulful, ironic, funny, filled with joy and sorrow and keeping a boatload of secrets. "I'm not a monster. Do you really think I'd harm a dog. You on the other hand..." -- Red
When Clarke first arrived at 51 we smelled a rat. Being wrong felt very right. Instead he proved a loyal friend and firefighter, gracefully removing himself so he didn't steal Hermann's thunder with his promotion to Lieutenant. "McLeod asked me to report on House 51." -- Clarke
The oddly sexy King Henry who sexed up Kenna in the stairway drifted off into craziness. As we realized his ultimate fate was near, it was difficult to let him go. "When is that English bitch going to die? She's sick, she feels better; she's sick, she feels better." -- King Henry
Malia is the saving grace after the death of Allison. She not only made a lasting impression as a decade-lost girl, she joined Scott's pack, is Peter Hale's lost daughter and has kick-ass chemistry with Stiles. Another hero in the making! "Get up! There's another way to the basement. Through the closed unit, where they keep the real psychos." -- Malia
