Grey's Anatomy Season 11 Episode 5 Review: Bend & Break

at .  Updated at .

Grey's Anatomy Season 11 Episode 5 was all about Calzona and their troubled marriage.

Throughout the years, we've seen the couple at its best and worst. In an intense hour, Calzona reached a point of no return. They realized in a therapy session that it was finally time to pull a Ross and Rachel and take a break.

At first, Callie didn't like the idea of a separation. As for Arizona, she wanted to give it a try.

While I wasn't surprised that they needed a real and permanent break, by the end of the installment I was a bit shocked that it was Callie who came to this conclusion and Arizona actually felt lost without Callie.

After witnessing their chaotic marriage in the form of flashbacks and seeing how damaged they've become after fighting for their marriage for so long, what Callie said seemingly made sense.

Callie learned so much, realized that she was suffocated and found herself feeling free without Arizona. She finally came to a breaking point and simply didn't want to spend all of her time trying to fix what she believed would always be broken. I'm glad that they both finally tried counseling together and just hope that they can still both be there for Sofia.

At the hospital, Callie and Arizona both immersed themselves with cases. Arizona struggled to impress Dr. Herman, but I think she'll be able to bounce back after disappointing her this week. Also, I'm definitely ready to see Callie working with both Owen and Jackson on the Veterans' projects.

Both this week and last week's Grey's Anatomy episodes focused heavily on only a few of the GSMH doctors. While I don't mind the change in storytelling, I can't help but miss everyone else whose stories we're not seeing. Who do you find yourself missing the most? If the writers continue to have more character-centric installments, whose story are you most interested in seeing?

Other Thoughts:

  • My favorite part of the entire installment was mainly when Callie hung with Meredith. It's easy to forget sometimes throwing back tequila shots and even cheeseburgers makes a terrible day nearly forgettable.
  • Who loved that Amelia mentioned Addison and Henry? I did!
  • A solid Grey's Anatomy episode includes a fair balance of the doctors' personal drama and the crazy medical cases. Unfortunately, this week's cases were overshadowed by way too much Calzona.
  • Check back early next week to chime in on the Grey's Anatomy Round Table.

All in all, this installment just wasn't my cup of tea. Then again, how could an episode possibly follow Grey's Anatomy Season 11 Episode 4? I like Calzona but felt like it was a bit overkill with all of the fighting, the therapy sessions and really just their overall drama.

So, what did you think of "Bend and Break?" Are you a Calzona fan? Was Callie right in realizing that their marriage can no longer be saved? Hit the comments now!
