Once Upon a Time Season 4 Episode 14 Review: Unforgiven

Does the potential for good also allow for an equal potential for darkness? That was the question at the heart of Once Upon a Time Season 4 Episode 14

Mary Margaret was harboring a horrible secret. Somehow, back in the Enchanted Forest she and David caused Maleficent to loser her child. No wonder the evil witch hates them?

Maleficent once told them that their own child (Emma) had as much potential for good as she did for evil. Could that be said for everyone? Couldn’t we all become heroes or villains or anything in between depending on circumstances and the choices we make?

It was Mary Margaret’s choices that were so disheartening. I understand that she only wanted to protect Emma but Emma’s a grown women who has made her own mistakes. Surely she could understand the challenges that her own parents have faced if only they took the time to explain them to her. I just don’t believe that the truth would break Emma in the way that Mary Margaret imagines.

However, her lies just might. Emma has just begun to learn to trust the people in her life, even those she loves. She was even brave enough to make herself vulnerable with Killian. She’s okay if he doesn’t feel comfortable sharing all the details of his past with her as long as he doesn’t lie about it. That was a big step for the two of them.

Unfortunately I’m afraid that David and Mary Margaret’s lies will be a big step backwards for them all and it may just lead Emma down the path of darkness. No doubt Maleficent will be pushing her towards it. What better way to make her parents suffer?

Elsewhere Regina took a big step in her road towards redemption when she swallowed her pride and told Marcus she was sorry for the way she’d acted towards his son. Her sincere apology may have earned her another step closer to finding the author.

As usual, Regina had all the best Once Upon a Time quotes as when Mary Margaret confided her secret.

Should have known that fish sticks and pound puppy were here for more than a second chance.

But will Mary Margaret’s request be a huge step backwards for Regina as well. Dark magic is kind of like a drug for Regina. If she goes undercover with the villains will she be able to find her way back?

Perhaps the most shocking moment of the episode was realizing that Belle has found a new love and it’s Will Scarlett? Whoa! I didn’t see that one coming. Have they even shared a scene before now? And I couldn't help but feel a bit of sympathy for Rumpel, even if he did bring this on himself.  The man looked positively gutted when he saw Belle and Will together.

Let me be clear, ladies. If you bring up my former sins around my son again, you'll find yourselves across that town line faster than you can say costume jewelry.

You know if that old bag was still a wolf I'd turn her into a coat for my collection.
