Helix Season 2 Episode 12 Review: The Ascendant

at .  Updated at .

For some reason, Helix Season 2 seems much more final than last year.

I have a feeling Helix Season 2 Episode 12 just set the groundwork for a series finale. The show has not been renewed by Syfy, and it's possible the writers are tying up loose ends. Are these the last episodes of Helix ever?

That's a bummer, because this series is not only entertaining, but it is incredibly unpredictable and unique.

Hacking up bodies was gruesome, even for Helix. Good thing they gave us another memorable shower scene to contrast it with. This show is so damn twisted, turn out Peter is the "ascendant" of the title.

Kyle finally admitted he was wrong about Alan, but wanted to know about Paris. So the proof is in a safety deposit box. What will Kyle find in there exactly? Their conversation gave me the impression that Kyle might actually survive and it's Alan that never leaves the island. I figured the grave Julia came across in the future was a fakeout, but perhaps it's not.

I found it interesting that Jules and Sarah had different agendas. In reality, Sarah's been all about saving her baby for several episodes now. With the mother root dead, she seemed to leave the cure up to Julia. Alan met his floating baby boy too.

Julia: I need to go to the tree's location. There may be viable seeds or pieces of root left behind.
Anne: I'm afraid that's not possible.
Julia: I know it's a long shot, but I have to try.
Anne: You misunderstand, I'd take you there if I could. Michael was the only one who knew its location.
Julia: But this painting...
Anne: Is nearly three hundred years old. It's a view from a hill near the abbey, but the tree is long gone.

Wasn't it awesome the way Julia laughed at Peter, strike that, Eli? That's exactly what his ascendance has felt like for me; some twisted joke. I have been able to follow Peter's line of thinking this season. Is Anne's soothing voice that convincing? Or is Peter up to something? The one snag in "The Book of Eli" is that he's not immortal.

Olivia came through after all, that was a nice surprise. Obviously, that meant her days were numbered. Hey at least Soren has Dr. Kyle. I wonder if the kid will grow up to be a CDC scientist?

When Julia went all Mission Impossible, I thought she was going to find something underneath that painting. The music definitely threw me for a loop. Hey, at least she made off with the painting before Eli could change his unstable mind. I loved the bit about the stars in Michael's painting pinpointing the location of where the tree was. He built the abbey around it; sweet!

Kyle's reaction to Sarah's baby was priceless!

Kyle: What the hell is that?
Sarah: It's my son.
Kyle: Your what? When were you pregnant?
Sarah: It was...
Kyle: No stop, you can explain it to me on the way. Nothing on this island surprises me anymore.

I couldn't believe that the ectogenesis pod was cracked. How the hell did that happen, it was safely tucked away in that bag on Sarah's back. Good thing Kyle had some juicy fruit; seriously? This turn of events conveniently stalled Kyle's plans.

Poor Soren had to watch Eli kill his mother. I really hope Peter dies a painful and cruel death. Will Kyle take him down? Something occurred to me when Soren said "I want to be someone else." Could he be future Caleb? Or does he leave the island with Dr. Kyle?

Cameron Brodeur's (Soren) performance in this scene tugged at my heartstrings. The kid did good.

Kyle: I lost my mom too, when I was just a few years older than you. I still think about her every day. That way she's always with me no matter what.
Soren: But my mom was my only family, and now I'm all alone.
Kyle: I'll be your family now, if you want.

That Kyle is such a good guy. He is definitely my favorite new character this season. If he doesn't survive I will riot!

Sarah was pretty badass while dealing with Anne. I was shocked she hacked off Anne's toes, but it was a great Helix moment. Did we have to revisit the birthing dungeon though? The sounds those women were making were creepy as hell, like something out of The Strain. At least Sarah got her new pod.

I loved that wide shot of the mother tree underneath the abbey floor. That root system in the tunnels under the abbey was insane. How the hell did Michael build that place? Jules found the fungus she needed, but Alan pulled a gun on her. Since we know she survives, what does that mean for Alan?

Can you believe Kyle made contact with the outside world? They were so damn close to being rescued too, it made me hate Peter even more. There's only one episode left guys. Who will make it off that damn island?

What did you think of "The Ascendant"? Do Peter/Eli's actions make any sense to you? Have you had enough of Anne? Will Kyle, Sarah and Soren escape? Did Jules shoot Alan? You're up Helix fans, hit the comments below and share your thoughts on the episode.

Don't forget, you can watch Helix online via TV Fanatic to catch up before the season finale!

NOTE: Helix Season 2 Episode 13 is titled "O Brave New World" and airs on Friday, April 10.
