The Terror Season 1 Episode 3 Review: The Ladder

at .

The idea of being stuck in ice in the middle of nowhere is a terrifying thought.

Where do you run when trouble comes calling?

Hiding in a tent doesn't work as one of Sir John's men found out on The Terror Season 1 Episode 3 when the Eskimo's monster snatched and viciously killed him, but who the monster really wanted was Sir John.

The Monster is Coming - The Terror Season 1 Episode 3

The captain of the Erebus and the entire expedition didn't have a chance even though he thought he did. It's fitting that he was mauled and then thrown into the hole into which he had the dead Inuit thrown.

Karma is a bitch, and then you die. And that's exactly what happened to Sir John.

I was hoping the bastard captain would get attacked at some point, but I wasn't expecting it to happen so soon.

His outburst at Francis was unnecessary. He was mean and insulting, and in the end, it was Francis who ended up right. I wonder if that thought crossed Sir John's mind as he faced the monster.

Francis might have pessimistic tendencies but he's listening to his gut, and his gut is telling him something is not right. He may not realize it now, but deep down he knows it's not a polar bear attacking the men.

What he knows is that they are all in danger. Now that Sir John is gone, he can move forward with his plan to send out a rescue party.

I loved that he was going to do it anyway despite Sir John's orders. And I love that he's now in charge of everything despite Sir John's words to the contrary.

Something's Out There

Fitzjames is going to end up being a thorn in Francis' side. He was devastated at Sir John's brutal death, and he'll remain loyal to the man's memory.

It's not clear how much he knows about the past relationship between Sir John and Francis, but Fitzjames is not a fan of  Francis so he's going to work as hard as he can to bring Francis down.

I wish he could have seen how Sir John left his men to fight the beast while he ran away. He was calling on the men of the Erebus to save him, not to come to the aid of the other men.

If Fitzjames was out there with him, Sir John would have left him to fend for himself. Fitzjames needs to open his eyes, or he's going to be the next meal for the monster.

Francis is a classy guy. Instead of writing something of his own to read at the memorial, he read Sir John's last journal entry. Sir John would not have done the same if the roles were reversed.

She Waits - The Terror Season 1 Episode 3

Francis was genuinely sad at Sir John's death, but now he's more determined than ever to save as many men as he can. It may be too late, though, for any of them.

Lady Silence obviously didn't need the charms to keep the Tuunbaq at bay. It knew that its master was gone and the seal he left as a gift for her was letting her know that she was his new master.

It's not a responsibility she wants, but someone needs to be in control, and the torch has passed to her.

I wonder if she's going to let the men on the H.M.S. Erebus and the H.M.S. Terror escape, or if she's going to let the monster continue his killing spree.

She has to realize that her father's death was an accident, but it might not matter at this point. If you remember on The Terror Season 1 Episode 2, the Eskimo man was chanting something before he died.

He might have put a curse on both ships so their doom may already be imminent. Even if she wanted to, Lady Silence probably can't reverse the curse.

Scary Photograph - The Terror Season 1 Episode 3

Not only do the men have to deal with the monster, but they also have to deal with the fact that something funky is happening with their food.

The one guy seemed to think it was all spoiled, so they'll all be pretty sick soon. Little do they know that they're being poisoned slowly by the lead in the cans. (This I read on a Wikipedia entry about Franklin's Expedition.)

I hope they have enough bathrooms on both ships otherwise there are going to be a lot of cold bottoms when they have to go outside to take care of business.

After three episodes of The Terror, I'm still hooked. How about you?

What did you think of "The Ladder"? Were you shocked the Tuunbaq killed Sir John? Are you happy to see him go?

Shipmate

You are suggesting it because you are a man who's happiest with a glass of Knock Me Down in one hand and then an alarm bell in another.
