Supergirl Season 3 Episode 20 Review: Dark Side of the Moon

at .

Nothing is ever easy, is it?

All Kara needed to do was get some of this black rock, but she discovered that the very thing she needed to save Sam, was also the very thing keeping her mother and fellow Kryptonians alive.

Wait, what?

A Part of Krypton - Supergirl

Supergirl Season 3 Episode 20 revealed that Kara's mother is alive and living on a meteor that is being sustained by black Kryptonite stuff!

This is crazy, right?

First of all, how many colors of Kryptonite are there? We've seen the standard green kind, red, silver, and now black. I'm not familiar with the comics, but seriously, how many more are we going to uncover as the series progresses?

Are we going to hit every color of the rainbow before all is said and done?

Regardless, I still don't completely understand exactly what the black kind does, other than it is sustaining Argo City, and it's going to separate Reign from Sam. That's good enough for me.

Lena was faced with an impossible choice as she and the rest of the DEO waited for Supergirl to return. Would she be willing to kill Sam to take out Reign if it came to it?

James: What would Sam want you to do?
Lena: Sam wanted me to heal her.
James: Not what Sam wanted you to do. What would Sam want you do now, with the choice you are presented with?
Lena: She would choose Ruby. Over anything. Even her own life. She'd want me to protect her daughter.

That answer was apparently yes, and I'm not saying it was the wrong choice, but maybe she could have waited just a tiny bit longer? Not that it ended up making any difference.

Supergirl did show up, just in the nick of time, of course, because this is TV.

We were cut off just as what I'm sure will be an epic battle was about to commence. Will they be able to use their newly acquired black rock before Reign escapes? Well, we still have three more episodes, so I'm guessing no.

I'm still holding out hope that this will end with saving Sam, but the closer we get to the end of the season, the more deflated I get. I think we have to start preparing ourselves for the fact that to stop Reign, Sam will have to be sacrificed.

Attacked - Superigirl Season 3 Episode 20 - Supergirl

While someone who wasn't even on Alex's radar was trying to kill her, she started to think about the hazards of her career choice.

She wants to be a mom someday. She broke up with the love of her life over that desire, yet it is just now hitting her that her job could prevent that from ever happening.

Alex has had how many near death experiences so far? I'm not planning to do the math, but I find it a little unrealistic that the broken leg and nearly being crushed to death by Reign's foot didn't trigger the realization sooner.

Obviously, it's different now, because she feels responsible for Ruby. There's an actual kid that depends on her and may continue to do so if they fail at saving Sam. It's a wake-up call for her.

Alex: Today, I risked my life for it. I jumped straight across without hesitating, without even thinking. And to be honest? That wasn't even the tallest building that I have jumped off of in the line of duty.
J'onn: You are someone who makes the hard choices, Alex. You go the extra mile.
Alex: Yeah, exactly. That's who I am. It's just baked into me. Jumping buildings, making enemies, that's all part of the job. But the irony here is, is that the thing that I had to do to save myself, is the very same thing that could have killed me. I mean one more inch and I would have died, and then, where would she be?

It didn't stop her from leaping off a building and then pulling herself up like an actual superhero. That was nuts, but totally badass!

It will be interesting to see if Alex continues to weigh the dangers of her job versus her desire to be a mom. I don't see her quitting any time soon, but it could be an opportunity for her to consider other job prospects.

As she said to J'onn, she got recruited when she was drunk and failing med school. She didn't have a lot of options at the time, but she does now. She could do pretty much anything she wanted.

Side note: She wasn't recruited until she was failing med school, but her first arrest was at 17. Is it just me, or does that math not add up?

Learning a Secret - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 20

So Kara discovers that in Argo City, she can just be herself, no disguise necessary. Mon-El also reveals that in the future, he's just Mon-El, member of the Legion, and doesn't have to mess with a disguise there either.

Obviously, this weighs on Kara, who's been grappling with the need to keep her identity a secret from Lena.

Ever since she's been on Earth, she's had to hide who she really is. It's something we the viewers tend to forget sometimes, especially considering the series started with her immediately telling James and Winn.

It's still hard to accept that she can't tell Lena when so many other people in her life know her secret.

As we've already discussed ad nauseum, telling her now could be deemed selfish, but it does make you wonder if Kara would consider moving to Argo City. She could be with her mom, among her people, and not have to hide who she is. She wouldn't be Supergirl or Kara Danvers, just Kara Zor-El.

When she said that to Mon-El, it meant something to her. If she saves Sam and the rest of Earth, would she consider leaving it behind?

All she's ever really wanted is to have her mother back in her life. That's an actual possibility now.

Supergirl Season 3 Episode 20 Quotes

Winn: You seem more stoic and grave than usual, which if we're being honest is making me a little bit queasy. What haven't you told me?
J'onn: Reign is becoming immune to Miss Luthor's synthetic Kyrptonite faster than we expected.

Supergirl and I may not see eye to eye, but there is one thing we can agree on, and that's that you need to be stopped. So enjoy your moment in the sun, Reign, because we are going to save Sam, and end you.
