Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 10 Review: Colony Collapse

at .

The prophecy has been broken! This New Orleans curse didn't stand a chance when Tandy and Tyrone worked together.

Everything came to a head on Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 10 when all the pieces lined up for the catastrophe we were warned about. Evil arrived in town, and all hell broke loose. And, just like the effects of Terrors, the adrenaline ramped up to a 22.

But, was the Cloak and Dagger Season 1 finale everything we hoped it would be?

The Cloak - Cloak and Dagger

Short answer: Yes! (Long answer: Here we go...)

Firstly, one of my favorite aspects of "Colony Collapse" was the flashbacks to the past Divine Pairings.

Chantelle and Evita casually talked about the dolls on the mantle, but we didn't know anything concrete about the pairs who came before. The pairings were simply warnings that defined history in moments of catastrophe in New Orleans. And, that death was sure to follow.

The flashbacks gave us more depth to the prophecy as it explained how the pairs affected the past, and what it meant for the future. Particularly, the marked person would be the sacrifice for preventing the destruction from continuing.

Chantelle: You found her? Tyrone’s divine pairing…
Evita: I found her, but she ain’t particularly “divine.”

The little girl, the doctor, the jealous brother, and the soldier all pushed into their final breath to ensure that no more heartbreak or pain would continue. At the height of tension when New Orleans was on the brink of ending, one of the pairs would die to end it all. And, we'd know this based on the mark on their arm.

The flashbacks were beautifully shot, and Chantelle's ominous voiceover throughout the scenes added a nice serene tone to the mood in between the drama.

Hands Up! - Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 10

Tandy's mission focused a lot on inspiring hope in others during her battle against Roxxon Corp. In fact, her attitude and drive to be the hero we all knew she could be was a big change from her motivation on Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 9.

We saw this right from the beginning when she helped save Melissa's life against the watercooler assassin. She didn't think about herself; she kept pushing herself to do the right thing.

Peter Scarborough planned to silence Tandy once and for all, and after realizing that he would do the same to others, she jumped right into saving New Orleans. Melissa looked shocked to see her daughter think of others and put the responsibility on herself. But, we're not surprised to see that; Tandy always had the power inside her.

As mentioned before, Tandy needed to believe in hope again instead of stealing it. And, once she did, that light would guide her to stop the evil from hurting others, like Mina.

Tandy never thought twice about jumping in to save Mina from the Terrors.

Tandy: I gotta go.
Melissa: Where are you going?
Tandy: I need to go help some people.
Melissa: Why you?
[Tandy hugs and kisses Melissa’s cheek]
Tandy: Why not?

It's great whenever a TV series explains the extent of a problem or catastrophe. This tidbit of exposition helps to round out the severity of an issue, and how it would affect our characters.

In the case of "Colony Collapse," when Mina revealed the map and the number of pipe locations that were primmed to blow, that looming threat showed the scale of devastation the Terrors would have in New Orleans.

Since the Terrors were spread through touch contamination and air, the effects of the virus would make its way throughout the city fast. Plus, based on the map, those pipes were located throughout New Orleans, so Mina and Tandy wouldn't be able to go after each one individual in time.

A major plan would be needed to solve an issue of this magnitude.

Peter Scarborough, as reluctant as he could be, was their only main contact to get the job done. He had the information to save the day; Tandy and Mina would be getting it at all costs.

The Divine Pairings - Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 10

Did you like Peter's eternal punishment twist?

Being trapped in a similar nightmare coma-like Ivan Hess had (in this case, on the oil rig during the night of the explosion) provided the karma he so desperately needed. Peter and Roxxon Corp caused the hell that affected all of these characters on Marvel's Cloak and Dagger, so experiencing that nightmare on repeat seems like the perfect punishment.

Tandy's payback couldn't have gone to a better guy.

One interesting thing of note is that Peter didn't die during the catastrophe. Sure, he's trapped in the coma, but he's still technically still alive. (Similar to the watercooler assassin, she's still alive.)

Could this mean Peter Scarborough might make a villainous return sometime in the future? Time will only tell.

Mina: What the hell happened to him?!
Tandy: He turned into a Terror.
Mina: A what?!
Tandy: Mina, listen, eight years ago on the rig that stole our dads, the entire crew went crazy just like this guy did.
Mina: No, that’s not true. The reports from the rig…
Tandy: Scarborough lied into getting you back in there to extract whatever had that power. That power made people crazy, it turned their adrenaline up to a 22. Your dad called them “Terrors.”
Mina: Yeah, well, he always did have a knack for accurate nomenclature.

Tyrone, on the other hand, had to hide in the shadows as much as he could during his conflict.

Connors had the entire city out looking for him after he framed Tyrone for murder on Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 9. The police were hot on Tyrone's trail, and no matter where he ran the police were close behind. Even Otis was urging his son to keep running for fear of getting arrested.

And, Tyrone was mostly doing a good job, except for hiding out in plain sight during Mardi Gras.

Cloak - Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 10

Don't get me wrong, Tyrone had to make a getaway, and when you're running through the city, hiding in a large group of partygoers always seems like a good idea. However, the police would be EVERYWHERE during a city event like this. Eventually, someone would notice the one person in a large purple and black cloak.

Plus, Tyrone staring down at police officers for up to 10 seconds at a time didn't help! (Seriously, he did not make the best moves in his escape attempt.)

He's lucky Brigid showed up when she did because the police officers were about to bust him. Having a loyal ally by his side would help him in the long run when they got trapped at the police station.

Speaking of the police station, Tyrone nearly got that police officer to free them from the storage room cage. He was so close! If Connors had not shown up to torment them, the pair would've been freed.

Also, the arrival of the Terrors helped too.

Dressed For Success - Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 10

I like the Terrors as enemies on Marvel's Cloak and Dagger.

The enraged citizens of New Orleans lose all their senses, and they run on pure emotion. Sometimes it's nice to have foes simply for the heroes to fight, especially on a superhero show like this. Tandy, Tyrone, Brigid, Mina, and even the random police officer got to show off their fighting skills battling against these uncontrollable enemies.

And, the Terrors caused chaos wherever they went. In a matter of seconds, the police station descended into madness once one person got infected by a contaminated partygoer.

If you're a fan of tension or drama, the moment when the Terror broke through the police station glass and infected the police officer will be a favorite. In that single moment, we as viewers had the same realization that all hell was about to break loose, and it was sheer action from that moment on.

You couldn't ask for a better catalyst than that.

Premonition - Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 10

Tandy and Tyrone's inspiring heart-to-heart in the church (as well as Evita's pep talk) is one of the best scenes of Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 10.

Both main characters were at their lowest moments once they realized the city had descended into chaos. Mina, the only hope for stopping the infection, had been infected herself, and Tyrone lost contact with Brigid after the police station became infested. Both were ready to throw in the towel since all hope seemed lost.

It took some pep talks, and the confidence to believe in their powers, to get them out of their mindset.

Tandy: I don’t know, Ty. I think we lost.
Tyrone: I think you’re right.
Tandy: I guess what happens now?
Evita: What happens is that you two are going to come at the problem and fix it… somehow.
[Evita drops the bolt-cutters]
Evita: But in the process, one of you is going to die.
Tandy: Uh, I’m sorry, can you repeat that last part again?
Evita: Every time the city’s been struck with a catastrophe, it’s always come down to two people. My auntie calls them, “The Divine Pairing.” It’s always two since the stories began.

Evita deserves A LOT of credit for starting the chain of events that got Tandy and Tyrone into saving the city. She knew of the curse of the Divine Pairings and what it meant for one of them (Tyrone had been marked and would die), but the needs of the city outweighed the needs of her heart.

The Divine Pairing needed to work together so that New Orleans would see another day. Even if it meant she would lose her semi-maybe-casual-boyfriend.

Hopefully, Evita will return for Cloak and Dagger Season 2 because her character has grown a lot since the first moment we saw her. She's starting to embrace her powers, and she made a selfless decision that would help others. I can't wait for her reunion with Tyrone after witnessing the heartbreak on her face saying goodbye to him.

Tandy: You are Tyrone FREAKIN' Johnson! Baller lady killer, master of space… if not time… you don’t need a cloak for all that.
Tyrone: Look, what if I do?
[Tandy reveals Billy’s sweater]
Tandy: Well, then you can use this.
[He gets up]
Tyrone: Is that?
Tandy: It is.
Tyrone: How did you…
Tandy: I stole it from little you. It’s the first thing I ever stole.
Tyrone: Why didn’t you say anything about this before?
Tandy: I needed it. I really needed it.
Tyrone: And now?
Tandy: And now you need it, even though you don’t need it. But I need you.

Tandy's motivating speech to Tyrone served as a good balance to Tyrone's speech on Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 8.

Regardless of the situation, one of them finds a way to raise the other up with affirmations and confidence. The two characters balance each other out since they do believe in one another.

After their real talk during Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 9, their relationship currently had a shaky undertone to it. Even though they're friends, they don't hold back with their thoughts or the truth since they're comfortable being open with each other. But, neither can stay mad at the other for too long.

Tandy giving Tyrone his brother's hoodie back was a big step in their friendship/relationship. The return brought them to a new place they had never been before. And, it was the perfect trigger to get Tyrone out of his funk.

That hoodie symbolized a connection they inadvertently had for years.

Tandy admitted that she felt safe having the hoodie around. And, by giving it to Tyrone, she metaphorically symbolized that she trusted him and needed him in her life like the hoodie. Just like the hoodie, Tyrone has become irreplaceable.

I can't wait until Tyrone gives Tandy back her ballet slipper. (The tears may be flowing.)

Runaway - Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 10

After that metaphor/gift, Tandy choosing to save Tyrone in the energy core made a lot of sense. She wasn't going to let him die and make the ultimate sacrifice to save the town alone; they had the power to solve the issue together.

Tandy and Tyrone have never followed conventional wisdom; they prefer to go at their own pace and react accordingly. While other Divine Pairings followed the same repetition of disaster and sacrifice, this pair chose to break tradition and work together.

Based on the results of the light show, they made the right choice.

Working together ultimately became the key towards stopping the Terrors and curing the town. It's a great underlining lesson to round out Cloak and Dagger Season 1: The power of teamwork was infinitely stronger than when Tandy and Tyrone chose to be on their own.

Teamwork is where Marvel's Cloak and Dagger's true power lies. And we can't ignore the radiant connection that Tandy and Tyrone have together. Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt have done a great job fostering their chemistry and the bond these two roles have in the partnership.

Their chemistry will be a great driver for Cloak and Dagger Season 2.

Revenge - Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 10

Are you ready for Mayhem?

Brigid has equally undergone some of the biggest character developments on Marvel's Cloak and Dagger.

Her character has changed since her first appearance on Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 1 due to the fact she learned to open up and trust more. And now in her new alter-ego, there's a world of possibilities for where the character could go.

Any comic book fan who saw her getting shot and coming into contact with the energy might've had an inkling that the moment would cause her to change. (I knew about her comic book counterpart for a while now, so I was waiting for the change to happen.)

Her emergence from the lake symbolized a new direction for the future. The characters have acclimated to their powers, and the curse has been broken, but there could still be more danger around,

Will the new Brigid turn out to be good or evil? Was she the only person infected by the energy directly?

We'll have to wait and see.

What did you think of "Colony Collapse"? What trouble will Brigid get into now that she's returned from the river changed? Will Tyrone ever get his name cleared? Did you like Cloak and Dagger Season 1 overall?
